I’m feeling the superhero burnout personally, regardless of the brand. I think the answer is the make the films much more raw and grounded (as best they can be). Like having as few flashes of magic and sparkles as possible. Cut down on the cosmic rays, Eternal beings, etc. Make us believe these movies are taking place in our world again. Make it relatable, and as believable as a super human being could be. I loved the Batman. I loved the Dark Knight trilogy. Nothing else we’ve gotten feels anything like those. It’s all just too wild and fantastical. It feels like if super hero movies are dragon ball Z, then we are started to get the convolution of super Saiyan 3-4, Super-Saiyan Black, etc.. Like enough is enough! When enough becomes enough, it’s time erase the universe and start from scratch. I want super hero movies than CAN and WILL stand a chance at garnering academy award hype. Maybe these good movies, that involve heroes.
Like the original 1978 Superman movie? I love that film. Or the Punisher movies? All three of the Punisher movies were great. Last decent comic book movie i watched was 'Dredd.' Great film. Not sure what the mainstream audience thought of it though. They should make more movies based on characters from 2000ad. Strontium Dog, ABC Warriors, Rogue Trooper. Some great material in 2000ad.

Well, if you see how all of the movies have turned out since they let Snyder go... Damn. I just came back from watching this film again in theatres, and I enjoyed it yet again. It’s dumb fun on every level, but I appreciated it for what it was, and it didn’t take itself to to seriously. I do agree about the “Spirit in the Sky” song though; they could have chosen something else. But I really did enjoy the score by Rupert Gregson-Williams, as there were some callbacks from the first film, but slightly expanded upon as a good score should do. I hate to sound cliched, but this movie is definitely not for everyone, despite its universal theme about brotherhood, which I did like. They didn’t turn Orm into just another Loki, which I was expecting it would at any moment, but he didn’t. They respected the character (IMHO, as I’m not that familiar with the character or the Aquaman comics). This was another hit for James Wan in my books. It just sucks that this is the film to close out the DCEU. Oh well, better this than The Flash, IMHO. Now that movie was terrible. I’ve defended the DCEU up until that film. Anyway, I’m getting off topic. Good review.
What a shame, used to watch Aquaman on Saturday morning cartoons, and back then I would thought a big budget live action adaptation to be the greatest thing, now, old jaded me doesn't even give a damn. Thanks for nothing DCEU.
1:20min mark, amazing how people forget, multiple superhero movies have bombed over the last 20 years alone. Even 20 years ago in 2003 their weren’t a lot of superhero mega hits in that year, and a couple of superhero movies came out in that same year.
The problem is we HAVEN'T HAD real super-hero comic book movies in the last few decades. They're mostly WEREN'T definitive, faithful adaptations of the source materials. Until you crack the codes between definitive and alternative, and between iconic and iconoclastic, you're not going to understand. You're there when you can see the difference between "Star Wars (1977 theatrical version)" (and heroic, iconic, definitive movies like: "Blade"; "Blade II"; "Sin City"; "The Road Warrior"; "Dredd"; "300"; "Alita Battle Angel"; "The Expendables"; "Starship Troopers"; "Robocop"(1987); "Predator"; "Predator 2") and the iconoclastic, alternative hero-hating, villain-exalting, villain-excusing perversions like "Empire Strikes Back"; "Batman"(1989); "Batman Returns"; "Batman Begins"; "The Dark Knight"; "The Batman"; "Joker"; all 'Spider-Man' movies; all 'X-Men' movies, all of the "MCU"; "Mad Max Fury Road"; 'Peirce Brosnan/Daniel Craig James Bond'; and all that self-loathing, torture-the-hero, wallowing-in-self-pity, Donnie Darko crap.
I wish people would leave Joker alone. Reeves should have done Hush or The Court of Owls for the sequel. Anything but the Joker. I'm tired of actors trying to "out-Ledger" Ledger.
I have to disagree about Blue Beetle, I thought it was a solid 7/10 film that didn’t re-invent the wheel, but had a good story and well-written characters
Honestly i didnt think you could get any worse than the marvels ,she hulk ,the flash and little mermaid But once again the studios proved me dead wrong
There needs to be more of a differentiation between superhero movie and comic book movie. Some great movies made from comics don't involve superheroes. Road to Perdition, Persepolis, American Splendor, Snowpiercer, Amicus' Tales from the Crypt/Vault of Horror, Ghost World, Men in Black.
We can’t e er say that the DECEU was “popular” as it pertains to breaking through to the wide cinema audience. Snyders DCEU appealed t9 hardcore fans who gravitated toward a lane of the source material based on Injustice. The scattered, rushed approach of the outliers while Winder Woman and Aquaman are plagued by “me too Marvelitis” James wan has never made a bad film. It’s too bad this film was butchered
I think they made the right decision to "cut off the arm to save the body." Ditching the DCEU for the new DCU and starting over is smart but confusing. They need to keep all those hands off the property, give DC the respect it deserves, and stop trying to emulate Marvel.
Another super hero movie with no stakes, just none, lots of flying objects all over the screen lots of crashes and booms and bams, cut to this to that, just didn’t care about anything that was going on.
5:33min mark no it didn’t, the WBD quartly call a few weeks ago acknowledged that the studio still lost a lot over the summer, Barbie success didn’t make up for the lost.
I'm not surprised it's a dumpsterfire. 😅🔥🎬 lol Let's be honest... ever since Warner Bros interfered w/Zack Snyder's vision, chopped up his movies, and then fired him from the franchise... ain't NONE of the DC movies been decent! Folks can say what they want about Snyder, but he loved these characters, and treated them w/the respect they deserved. No hokey jokes, no stupid jump cuts, no colorful nonsense that means nothing, and leads to nothing. In the end, he gave us solid, grounded superhero stories... but ever since the studio f*cked w/his vision & moved away from it, it's been a disaster. Case in point: Aquaman. The first movie was still Snyder influenced. Director James Wan secretely went behind Warner Bros back to work w/Zack, to show him still images & scenes, etc. because he wanted to try to stick to Zack's vision for the character as much as possible. WB wanted colorful, Marvel-lite, hokey nonsense, and Wan wasn't feeling that. He wanted what Zack had planned. So he worked w/Snyder, and we got a pretty decent film. Same w/the 1st Wonder Woman movie as well. But then look at the state of BOTH sequel films! Once they had Snyder stop overseeing these projects... it's been a MESS! I knew this Aquaman sequel would be as disjointed & disastrous as the WW sequel film. And I probably sound like a Snyder fangirl, lol, but really, I just HATE IT when studios f*ck w/their creatives, ruin their films... and then sit back & let the public blame everything on the director, when most of the problems were caused by the studio. WB ALSO f*cked w/the Mortal Kombat movie in similar ways. That 1st 15mins of the movie where we get Scorpion's backstory, that was so cinematic, and grounded? Yeah, the WHOLE MOVIE was supposed to be like that. But then the studio came in & demanded the director make it more colorful, more kid friendly, and... add a main character that has NOTHING to do w/the franchise at all, so that audiences could learn about MK at the same time as the main character did. Problem was: MK is a 30yr old franchise! Everybody *IS* already familiar w/it, and didn't want to see some "Cole" character as the lead ffs. The movie turned out ok... but think of how good it COULD have been, had the studio not pulled those kinds of behind the scenes shenanigans. I really hate that crap. Getting back though... WB should have just trusted Snyder, and "let him cook" dammit. lol Every time we've seen a Director's Cut of his projects, they turn out to be leaps & bounds better than what the studio forced him to give people. They ruined the DC brand, and I don't have much faith in what they'll do w/James Gunn at the helm either. His Suicide Squad movie was... ok. 😕 I guess. lol But lets be honest, we all watched that movie ONE time, and then never watched it again. Be honest, you know I'm right. Bottom line: as long as WB owns DC .... it's D.O.A.
BvS and Suicide Squad (2016) derailed this whole universe IMO. Just never recovered after that. Looking back on the DCEU now that it's over, IMO BvS and Suicide Squad (2016) derailed the whole thing. And then the theatrical JL was the nail in the coffin
damm i was really hoping it would be at least ok its time to put the train wreck that is the dceu behind and move on but if i were james gun i would not be in such a rush to release superman push it back a year or too so people forget, otherwise no matter how good it is people especially the average consumer who doesn't care about dceu's or dcu they just think its another super hero movie will stay away
How can any company employee someone who has been found out lying under oath in UK courts and US courts about having donated their divorce settlement to charity? When a small amount relative to €7m divorce settlement was actually donated on her behalf by Elon Musk.I’m not even getting into her obvious mental health issues as for me lying about donating to charity is the lowest of the low. How could WBS ever hope to prosper employing this type of person.
Haven’t seen Aquaman yet, but I’ll probably give it a shot just to see how bad it is. I will say I think he is wrong about one movie and that is blue beetle, that movie was a blast and considering I knew nothing about the character before the movie, I hope we get a sequel, but probably not.
While I agree there are waaayyy too many comic book movies, I don’t think it’s comic book fatigue solely. I think a large part of this years massive entertainment financial failure is the public’s growing and healthy disdain for crap writing and finally putting these spoiled actor shits in their rightful place as nothing more than jesters. Thanx for the review James
Aquaman budget: 275$ million Godzilla minus 1: 15$ million. let that sink in for a second. Godzilla was the first "big budget" action/fantasy/sci-fi I've enjoyed in so long. Hollywood needs to take some fucking notes and get its bloated head out of its fat ass.
Even if this movie was not good. My opinion the best Aqua Men is Jason Mamoa , this movie needs Zendaya & a new director ..the ideea of a movie with Aqua Men is amazing. 😢
I think you are 100% it felt rushed and slapped together as well as skipping many scenes to explain or add to . I think they knew with the trial that it was already ruined
This may be a dumb question but why doesn't Aquaman have short blonde hair? That doesn't look anything like Aquaman to me. Why do these movie characters look absolutely nothing like the comic books they come from? Is it really so difficult to cast the right actor for the part?
Hollyweird would greatly benefit form a refocus on art and creativity instead of numbers from sales and seats - the1970's would churn out masterpieces - we haven't seen an original masterpiece come out of Hollywood for decades??
POV appreciated, will see it just for completion reasons alone, same as Shazam. I will say one aspect, regardless of Canon that wasn't needed is adding the son, tropy to me.
I just want DC Comics to recover from New 52 and get back to a more iconic standing. The DCEU has been horrid from Go for me because it was based onGeof Johns shite and New Poopy-2
I just watched it in IMAX 3D and despite that I forgot to wear contacts today, I had a great deal of fun! Didn’t once reached out to my phone and the film was tightly paced with a lot nice visuals that are no less interesting than the original. I find all these bad reviews are actually repetitive and pile on for the sake of piling on, and getting really tedious! I grew up with 99.99% movies and shows being silly and nonsensical, don’t recall everyone piling on a commercial film like these days. Would any TH-camrs start to get off the bandwagon of doom and gloom and just let people have some mindless fun? These is zero creativity in your review on this matter, isn’t it like the pot calling the kettle filthy?
Every movie in this universe stunk I wanted to like them. Going with my young kids and ex girlfriend to these movies were awful experiences and waste of money on expensive movie tickets. First wonder woman and second suicide squad were ok.
15:07min you know and I know superhero movies have their ebs and flows but they aren’t going away. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was an extreme lazy one.
This is probably a silly desire, but, in terms of DC, I would love to see a thriller revolving around Question. Along with Batman, he has always been one of my favorite DC characters, or maybe a Phantom Stranger movie or miniseries would be fun. A dark, Death Wish-style Red Hood movie would be good, too. Thank you for suffering through this movie so that you could give us your honest review, James.

The superhero genre should have ended with End Game. Took a 3 year break then restart with the X-men.
What a wet fart ending for the DCEU
"The movie equivalent of sitting in the bath, farting and biting your own bubbles". That's a quote with legs.
What a shame, used to watch Aquaman on Saturday morning cartoons, and back then I would thought a big budget live action adaptation to be the greatest thing, now, old jaded me doesn't even give a damn. Thanks for nothing DCEU.
Buah hahaha! All i needed to see was the image on your video review🤣
As for the DCEU/Snyderverse, it's been a mixed bag that promotes mixed feelings. (It sure ain't the DCAU/DC Animated Universe!).
I wish people would leave Joker alone. Reeves should have done Hush or The Court of Owls for the sequel.
Anything but the Joker. I'm tired of actors trying to "out-Ledger" Ledger.
I will not be wasting my time or money to watch this in theaters.
I have to disagree about Blue Beetle, I thought it was a solid 7/10 film that didn’t re-invent the wheel, but had a good story and well-written characters
I'm surprised the first one made as much as it did. Didn't care for it, to each is own. I have no interest in watching this.
Will Wrong Reel be regularly returning after the Best of 2023 episode coming out soon?
Love the thumbnail. It just doesn't look like a joy to watch.
I wouldn’t say all of them were horrible. It’s just they perform horribly.
Honestly i didnt think you could get any worse than the marvels ,she hulk ,the flash and little mermaid
But once again the studios proved me dead wrong
As a pure COMIC BOOK movie - this movie was FUN! Especially in Imax.
Already knew the answer of this video but still clicked because of the thumbnail lol 😂
Only been liking the rated R comic movies lately, so pretty much joker and the Batman
We can’t e er say that the DECEU was “popular” as it pertains to breaking through to the wide cinema audience. Snyders DCEU appealed t9 hardcore fans who gravitated toward a lane of the source material based on Injustice. The scattered, rushed approach of the outliers while Winder Woman and Aquaman are plagued by “me too Marvelitis”
James wan has never made a bad film. It’s too bad this film was butchered
The thumbnail has me in stitches 😂😂😂😂
Momoa has a range, and these movies test that beyond.
This sounds like Jason Momoa doing an Aquaman parody sketch for the MTV Movie Awards.
I'm not surprised it's a dumpsterfire. 😅🔥🎬 lol
Let's be honest... ever since Warner Bros interfered w/Zack Snyder's vision, chopped up his movies, and then fired him from the franchise... ain't NONE of the DC movies been decent!
Bottom line: as long as WB owns DC .... it's D.O.A.
The best video thumbnail!! haha
Gave a Like for the thumbnail alone 😂
Blue Bettle was horrible? WTF are you talking about. 78% RT score and 93% AS.
BvS and Suicide Squad (2016) derailed this whole universe IMO. Just never recovered after that. Looking back on the DCEU now that it's over, IMO BvS and Suicide Squad (2016) derailed the whole thing. And then the theatrical JL was the nail in the coffin
quite frankly i blame the fans.
The DCEU was never popular. Wonder Woman, Aquaman and the first Shazam movie doesn't make the DCEU once popular.
damm i was really hoping it would be at least ok its time to put the train wreck that is the dceu behind and move on but if i were james gun i would not be in such a rush to release superman push it back a year or too so people forget, otherwise no matter how good it is people especially the average consumer who doesn't care about dceu's or dcu they just think its another super hero movie will stay away
Market oversaturation. 1 super hero movie a year is fun. 10 superhero movies a year is boring.
Wait
Randle Park is in it?
No way I will watch this.
This may be a dumb question but why doesn't Aquaman have short blonde hair? That doesn't look anything like Aquaman to me. Why do these movie characters look absolutely nothing like the comic books they come from? Is it really so difficult to cast the right actor for the part?
Happy Holidays Sir !! #chisum
Hollyweird would greatly benefit form a refocus on art and creativity instead of numbers from sales and seats - the1970's would churn out masterpieces - we haven't seen an original masterpiece come out of Hollywood for decades??
Original Hollywood movies do continue to be made.
It's Not as BAD as many of the reviewers making it out to be, but it' not GOOD either. I give it a 2.5 out of 5.
DC as Atlantis.
POV appreciated, will see it just for completion reasons alone, same as Shazam. I will say one aspect, regardless of Canon that wasn't needed is adding the son, tropy to me.
Competition? What for?
@@DenkyManner In no rush to see it but why skip it 🤷♂️
Maybe Momoa is into “water-sports”
I just want DC Comics to recover from New 52 and get back to a more iconic standing. The DCEU has been horrid from Go for me because it was based onGeof Johns shite and New Poopy-2
Incredible thumbnail Jimmy
Aquaman 2 is the movie equivalent of the new Coke, without sugar.
Blue beetle was amazing though
James, what are your thoughts on Death Sentence? I think it’s pretty underrated in Wan’s filmography.
I hadn't seen the trailer for this until I went to see Godzilla. Wow, talk about cringe
I wanted to see it because of Jason Momoa. I didn't see it because of Amber Heard.
I’m here because of the thumbnail. 😂
Every movie in this universe stunk I wanted to like them. Going with my young kids and ex girlfriend to these movies were awful experiences and waste of money on expensive movie tickets. First wonder woman and second suicide squad were ok.
Big shocker! Too bad.
If it had no Amber Heard then I might watch it on streaming but with her in it no way will I watch it
15:07min you know and I know superhero movies have their ebs and flows but they aren’t going away. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was an extreme lazy one.
Is it bad enough to watch for laughs?
Should have replaced Amber Heard with Jonny Depp
Pick your poison. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, WW84 or Superman III? 😂😂😂😂
Going back to the "pee in the mouth" well... so to speak...
just based off the thumbnail. you know it's a great movie. lol
