I went into this movie thinking that it would be another fight movie and thought that yeah I like Tom Hardy... but then I ended up crying so many times.... when Tommy and Brendan met at the beach.. Paddy trying to meet Brendan and being turned away when he sees his grandkids (I know they have a bad history and he's trying to be better -but that hurts).. the part when Paddy goes back into drinking.. and then at the end with "I love you" I just cried air because the tear-tank were empty... Best part of the movie is that you can see that Tommy does the fighting out of respect and love and you can't hate his reasons..

the father was an abusive alcoholic, though likely from struggling to support the family and it not going well, despite how hard he was trying, and so he took it out on his wife and sons, he's not a monster, just beaten down and struggling with "the system"/life/etc, taking out his frustration and failure and struggle on his own family that he was trying so hard to fight for and support (likely blaming his family for all of his struggle in trying to take care of them and support them, ruining his own life), beating up his wife, and likely Tommy was the one (despite being the younger brother) trying to take the abuse/hits from his father and/or protecting his mother from getting hit, and also, the father was a mma coach, and tommy was the better fighter, so the father, always favored tommy over brendan, causing a lot of resentment in brendan, he was the "nobody" of the family, and likely why it was easy for him to walk away with his gf, having his own life, and never looking back this left poor tommy, having to run away with his mother, from his abusive father, and living on the streets, starving to death and getting sick, likely from the cold/rain/etc, and ended up watching his mother directly die in his own arms, from all of her injuries from her husband, and then living on the street, in running away from her abusive husband, as tommy tried to support his mother and himself, but failed, with having her die in his arms... tommy put a lot of the blame on his older brother Brandon, as he was the older brother, he should have stood up to their father and protected them, he should have stayed and tried to take care of them, when tommy and his mother ran away, being with them, but he abandoned them, running away with his gf, and never looking back, leaving poor tommy, the younger brother, struggling to survive on the streets, trying to take care of both himself and his mother, and failing... with her literally dying in his arms, and so, tommy has a ton of resentment in brandon, blaming brandon a lot for his mother's death, by not being there with them, as the older brother, not standing up to their father and trying to protect them, etc etc etc... and so, no longer having anything at all, except rage and hatred, tommy would join the army, what better way of unleashing his rage/hatred, and he made his first and only true friend and family, with them caring about tommy and loving him, being nice and kind (unlike his own disfunctional and dead family), but that friend would get killed in a battle, and so, tommy vowed to take care of that dead friend's family, he wasn't going to fail, like he did with his mother, and so, every way that he could make money, he sent it to his dead friend's family, to help them without their "man of the house", and ultimately, he'd do the mma (another means of unleashing/using his rage/hatred) to make money... also, tommy was the only survivor from that battle/attack (not only was his only friend killed, but everyone) (I can't remember if it was actually friendly fire, or actually the enemy, that attacked and killed every one of his group), but being the only survivor, tommy ran away, and on his way away from the battle, he came across the sinking tank, and ripped off its hatch, saving their lives, becoming a hero to them, despite his "desertion" from the battle/war/army... the father, being old and likely nearing death, truly wanted to see his family again, as he did really care for them deep down (and why he struggled so hard to take care of them), finding tommy first, and tommy did somewhat give some love/care/forgiveness back to his father, and being a grown man now, tommy was no longer afraid of his old dying father, rendered harmless now, and also, being older, tommy might have some understanding of his father, but only just a little bit, tommy doesn't really forgive his father that much, and mostly has no interest in his father, aside from merely using/needing him for his mma training, but tommy did have and show and do, a little heart for his father, we even see tommy "cuddling/holding" his crying father (disguised as his alcoholic god-preaching yelling/screaming at tommy, which would/did have frightened little boy tommy and brandon and his wife, but not now with grown up tommy, and also who had been in the army too, further being used to yelled at by the drill sargent, though the father gave him his first practice, back when he was a little boy, of course, lol) the father also tried to get back together with brandon... and especially wanting to see his grandchildren... but brandon had ZERO heart for his father, not even letting him meet his grandchildren... unlike tommy, who did give a slight bit of heart to him, but not brandon... tommy kept pushing his father (getting back at him), and this eventually broke him down, which resulted in the scene above with him going back to alcohol and yelling and screaming at tommy, masking away his pain and tears... at everything that he had done to destroy his family, on top of his struggle to try to take care of and support his family... it was just too much pain and suffering for him... ending with us actually seeing him crying, as tommy held him in his arms... just as he had held his likely crying mother, as she died in his arms... at the very end... the father's cheering of brandon, especially when he won the mma, earned him a tiny bit of heart from brandon (a nod/acknowledgement/smile), but that was it... (unless, it shows the father being able to see his grandchildren in the end credits or end of the movie, as I can't remember if it does or not) unfortunately, for poor tommy... he lost to his brother, and thus he failed to earn money for his own only true family, of his dead friend, which hurts him the most, more than having to go to jail for his "desertion" from the army/battle/war and his broken arm... how will his only true family now pay all of their bills and etc? ya, brandon's house, life, and family are okay, but what about tommy's family... they're not okay... one family won, and one family lost... it would be cool, if brandon would help out with tommy's family... but brandon doesn't even knows about them (no one does, except tommy)... and likely he wouldn't help them either, anyways... brandon has less "heart" than does tommy... everything tommy has done has been for someone else... everything that brandon has done, has been for himself... tommy is the better brother... not just the fighter, but the better person, and the better man
I like to believe after Tommy ad Brandon fixed things, Tommy told him about the other family. Brandon was set. The prize money was more than enough to pay the mortgage and he would have had money left over to give. it was 5 Million. I'm sure Brandon after hearing why his brother was doing this, would happily give some money
I think Brendan took more of the beatings than Tommy did - Tommy was the favourite and you can tell from Brendan's fighting style that he's used to getting hit pretty damn hard.

Beside the brother-part tof this movie it's basically just "Rich Franklin -the movie" :D With that being said, this movie is one of mmy top 10 and I always end up tearing up at the "I love you" part... first time watching this I did it at my computer with headphones and my girlfriend came up asking me how I was doing and thought I received news about my dad who were doing kimo at the time... there is something special about this movie and it hits harder from having a background in MMA and I just love Nick Nolte's part when he goes back to drink.. also tears me apart.
This is loosely based on a true story. The same story that Here Comes the Boom (the comedy version) was based on. If you haven't seen that it also has some pretty legit MMA in it. Kevin James actually was a wrestler, and actually trains with Bas Rutten who is also in it.

This is the movie that got me into Tom Hardy’s acting. Such an amazing film. I met Jennifer Morrison last year and she is really nice. I told her I’m from Gurnee Illinois and she is from Arlington Heights Illinois which I knew. I met Frank Grillo who plays Brendan’s coach when I used to work for a security company for the tv show Prison Break. Frank is an amazing dude and very funny. We pulled a few pranks on each other lol
You need a whole series of martial arts films foe sure but I'll go ahead and throw BOTH Drunken Master films on thr list, but to capture the real heart and soul and enjoyment factor do the Legend of the Drunken Master from the 94

I don’t know if I’ve heard The National in any other movie, but the needle drop on Today in the last fight gets me misty every time. Good band with a great song in an even greater movie moment.
Not sure you're giving Brendan's wife the credit the character deserves...very cynical when the storytelling is pretty clear about what's going on.
Does anyone know what happens to Tommy does he go to prison for deserting his unit??? I would love to see this a series or a show with multiple seasons the characters are just so compelling I just dont know if any actors could make these characters as compelling as the actors in this movie

I love this movie. Nick Nolte is so good in it. Check out Cinderella Man for another incredible fighting movie. It's Russell Crowe and Ron Howard, during the Great Depression. You'll like that one too.

This is the movie that got me into Tom Hardy’s acting. Such an amazing film. I met Jennifer Morrison last year and she is really nice. I told her I’m from Gurnee Illinois and she is from Arlington Heights Illinois which I knew. I met Frank Grillo who plays Brendan’s coach when I used to work for a security company for the tv show Prison Break. Frank is an amazing dude and very funny. We pulled a few pranks on each other lol

You need a whole series of martial arts films foe sure but I'll go ahead and throw BOTH Drunken Master films on thr list, but to capture the real heart and soul and enjoyment factor do the Legend of the Drunken Master from the 94

I think it's because Fedor was the GOAT at that time, so Koba was an supposed to draw on that likeness.

Great movie, and a darn tear-jerker. But I'll never get why they chose to essentially spoil the final fight with the DVD cover, which is the same background as at the start of this reaction.
