    As of the end of the 2024 season, this Seattle-Cleveland game is considered the fifth greatest comeback in MLB history, with Cleveland having a 0.03 percent chance to win this game.
    Whats crazy is that last week on July 28 2001, we had the fourth greatest comeback in MLB history in terms of percentage, when the Pirates had that comeback against the Astros in game 1 of their doubleheader, when Brian Giles hit the walk off grand slam off Billy Wagner.
    This Cleveland-Seattle game also tied the greatest comeback in MLB history with 12 runs (as of the end of the 2024 season). Cleveland becomes the third team in MLB history to win a game after being down by 12 runs.
    The other two teams to win a game when down by 12 runs (Tigers, Philadelphia Athletics) happened in:
    June 18, 1911 = Tigers were down by 12 runs, and they eventually beat the WSOX. In this game, the WSOX scored 7 runs in the top of the first inning, and then had a 12 run lead after the top of the 5th inning, and then the Tigers started their comeback the rest of the game, which included 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to win the game 16-15. The Ty Cobb Tigers
    June 15, 1925 = The irony in this game is that Cleveland is once again involved in a 12 runs comeback game, but in this game, they lost the 12 run lead to the Philadelphia Athletics. In this game, Cleveland (road team) had a 12 run lead going into the bottom of the 8th inning, and then the Philly Athletics scored 13 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to take the lead and then they won the game. Whats crazy about this comeback is that the Philly Athletics didnt win this game via walk-off-fashion like the other 2 games, and just by the standard 3-outs fashion
    So Cleveland has been on this list twice, as winners and losers.
    But what makes this 2001 more impressive is that this was done against the eventual 116-winning Mariners of 2001, and to happen on Sunday Night Baseball, so just imagine ESPN salivating.
    As for this game, Incredible how Seattle blew that game, putting a blemish on their perfect season so far. Given, Sasaki threw strike 3 to end the game in the bottom of the 9th to Vizquel (not shown here), but the ump called it a ball, and then the comeback continued when Vizquel hit a game-tying bases-clearing double on the very next pitch by Sasaki.
    And John Rocker won the game for Cleveland; go figure.

    I moved into my first house that day and after I hooked up the illegal cable, this game was on the tv. I was too tired to change the channel so I woke up to this game right when the announcer said it was too late for them to come back. I don't even watch baseball like that, but his comment made me curious to watch a legendary comeback. I'm still in that house.

    John Rocker hit 100 MPH in this game. I remember Rocker saying that before he retired, he wanted to hit 100 MPH. Well, he did. He then went downhill immediately after this game, walking too many hitters and losing his command, as all the pressure got to him. I'll never forget that.

    August 5, 2021 (a few weeks from tomorrow) will mark 20 years since this game. I think ESPN should do a 30 for 30 about it to honor the anniversary.

    Mariners should have had 117 wins that season for the all-time record, instead they share the record of 116 with the 1906 Chicago Cubs. They had a good club that year, and they should have beat the Yankees. Instead, another day of infamy in 44 years of Mariners futility. Another irony is that Seattle would play Cleveland that year in the ALDS, after 9/11. The Tribe blew out the M's 17-2 in game 3 to go up 2-1 in the series. But Seattle won the next two games on gems pitched by Garcia and Moyer, and the bats of Cameron and Edgar Martinez.

      @renardmigrant 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On the other hand, they won a load of games they should've lost. So maybe they should've won 110 or 109 games that year.

    • @pigalleycatemanresu7321
      @pigalleycatemanresu7321 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@renardmigrant That may be, I'd have to go through the box scores of the entire season to agree or dispute that. What is known is that their best RBI man, Brett Boone had a career year, so out of line with his career stats, that no one was surprised that he was juicing. So you could say they won a bunch of games by cheating. But how many players on opposing teams were doing the same? What is certain, they never made a 12-run comeback!

      Also the Cubs needed 8 fewer games to win their 116, shorter season back then.

    I really want to know if MLB could lay out an archive of full games from years past from all teams. Like if they had complete seasons of teams from the 90s, 00s, 2010s and had a way where you could watch them.

    I was 11 years old, about to turn 12, and watched this entire game on ESPN with my sister. Thome was my childhood hero, loved the dude. Was glad at least that Thome hit two homers, despite both being early-ish. Lol. In the ninth you just started to get that feeling they were gunna come back. Kenny Lofton should be a hall of famer - just watch this game. He takes some incredible pitches, walks, sprays line drives. Stolen base threat. Juan Pierre on steroids, figuratively speaking. I ended up going to Cooperstown and saw Jolbert Cabrera’s bat barrel - it shattered, flying into left field on the game winning hit.
