    I'm saying this for people that don't have a machine shop available to them, so that they can be encouraged to fix stuff. There are lots of things that can be done with relatively simple tools. An average man with a welder , a drill press and an angle grinder could make that part for what it is. Although it wouldn't be nearly as pretty or accurate. It's just a bracket for a hydraulic valve lever...the acceptable tolerances involved are pretty wide. I do have a machine shop in my garage, so I'm not denigrating anything that Steve did, at all. But we all have to start somewhere, and this is one of those projects that literally can be made from a piece of flat steel and a piece of black pipe, and you could probably delete the black pipe. The large center hole is just clearance for the rod that sticks out of the valve. The only critical dimensions are the distance from the pivot point to the 4 mounting holes, and even that would probably function perfectly fine within 1/16" tolerance. It might not look the same but function perfectly and stronger than the original. Think about how you can make that part with the tools you have, it's a good exercise for problem solving.

    Oh how I love these one-off jobs. No repetition! Any more than 3 is just plain rude. Ahh, The shaper, The one most misunderstood tool in the job shop. There are some things they are just sooooo good at. I expanded my set of transfer punches to one inch by using Gr 8 bolts and taking the heads off and after turning the thread less ends to a point the same as the set I torch and oil hardened the pointed ends (with used gear oil). 40+ years and still marking like the day they were made. How wonderful it is to see Stan. I had forgotten all about the bash. It would be a 3 or 4 day drive for me to get there. Flying with a wheelchair sucks. They already lost mine once for 3 days before I got it back. What a neat lathe setup. using a flexible tool to indicate to is nothing short of brilliant my friend. I normally move the apron down and move the tailstock over it, do the drilling and move things back up until now that is. Saw files eh, I use the same flat file for doing the rakers to do the teeth. That way I only have one file for everything. On a skip tooth chain they are wicked ! How nice to see Elizabeth in the shop. It's been a bit since we have seen her. So bud, MAKING IT BETTER is why we do this. Take care eh.

    Beautiful end result Steve. This was a nice little part to make because of all the different machine operations it involved. The one you made definitely won't be cracking like the zinc one from the factory, yours would last generations if needed 😁
    Your choice to just braze in the tube in the center obviously made way more sense then taking the time to set it up and center it on the rotary table and calculate where to stop on each side etc. and wouldn't even make sense anyway considering what the part is for.
    Love the channel and work you show.

    A tidier way to make this joint is to tin the parts (jointed areas only) first.
    Wipe away excess solder while it is still molten. My preferred method to do this for small items is to drop them on a hard surface which causes excess to splash off.
    Assemble the joint cold , which may require a light pressing.
    Coat exposed joint areas with more flux and raise the assembly ,evenly, to the melting point of the solder. At which point you touch one part of the joint with the solder and instantly get a perfect joint that needs little clean up.
    Surface tension pulls only the required amount of molten solder into the joint to fill the gap.

    Another fine video. One comment that I have is an easier way on the 4 jaw. While you were drilling is to also drill the center hole (I do 1/4" most of the time). Then put a corresponding gage pin in your lathe chuck, put the work piece on the pin and push it against the chuck as you close the jaws around it. This is a great technique especially for offset holes in a 4 jaw.

      Looking to do the same in my shop, what size compressor and nozzle do you run successfully?

    • @bruceanderson9461
      @bruceanderson9461 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MapleEngineeringAndMachining I use a 5 hp piston compressor. It is very important to control moisture so my air goes through an aftercooler that has its own fan, then the tank with a timed drain, and finally a dehumidifier with a timed drain. I also use an air filter and oil filter. The air is then fully dry and can be used for a plasma table also. I use 80 to 100 size glass beads and about a 1/16 nozzle with a pressure pot to control the feed. I use 60# pressure. Gravity siphon feed is ok but the pressure pot and feed gives a very consistent flow of media. You will need some type of vacuum to remove the dust from the cabinet. Check out Eastwood and skat products for a start. Air systems can be simple or complex. The better you design them the better your bead blaster will work. I constantly use the bead blaster.

    Nice job Steve, always fun to replicate a part only better. Fun to use all the tools even though a saw, mill, lathe and belt sander would have done just as well. But what is the fun in that when you got all the tools. Thanks very much for sharing.
