I think that people forget that a big part of making music is actually having fun doing it, whether it is creating a patch on a modular system or dialing in the sound that you want in one of your synths.

    • @HOLLASOUNDS
      @HOLLASOUNDS ปีที่แล้ว +4

I have a some physical sythersizors but I'm mainly a Reason DAW user, and as this gentleman said "I only use about 20% of the synths capabilities" this is true for most people. I have Reason 12 all these fancy upgrades and about 40 software sythersizors but I made pretty much all of those sounds before using Reason 4 that only had 3 sythersizor devices because I used about 80% of there capabilities.

Exactly, I own all my gear because I enjoy it. It’s my hobby. I don’t need to be efficient. Making music and designing sounds is something I enjoy doing on my own time.

Spot on Tim. There's some weirdos out there, sat in their troll chairs, telling others how they expect them to behave.

Keep up the good work, always interesting.🙂

Very sorry to hear about Mister Scrunge. I sincerely hope he returns soon. Meanwhile, what a fantastic song. Love the opening synth parts, they really get me interested in the song. But the stand out is the synthesized vocals. Can’t really remember liking synth vocals before. I didn’t find them convincing as in I thought it was a real singer, but I liked the singer. I liked her performance. Kinda weird. Anyway great video.
Thank you very very much for producing them. And, as always, I look forward to your next.

I so get the wish for useable sounds without internet drama. I've built my modular system (in big thanks to your videos!) and that's now finished. I have the voices I need and just want useable sounds from the system I built. I just trigger it from my DAW which is viewed as blasphemous in certain circles. Hoping for a swift return of Mister Scrunge. I'm sure you will have thought of all the things (litter box outside et cetera as homing signal) so crossing my fingers for a New Years miracle. Best wishes to you and yours!

As a fellow feline father, best wishes for Scrunge’s return. Have faith, my record is 7 weeks. Lovely tune and very cool video. Hopefully the energy is put out there to guide him home.
Regarding justification, it’s often frustrating that we find ourselves in this place where the audience is just as interested (more?) in the sausage-making process as the taste. For whatever reason, we find vicarious inspiration from the peek inside, all of us hoping that a piece of gear or software will inspire us too. The scrutiny and judgment can be annoying, but I’m certain the majority of us appreciate the time you’ve put into it, and the music interludes you share.
Thank you for a wonderful 2022 and I wish you a prosperous 2023 that gives you the time and inspiration to put together that musical project that’s on your wishlist. Make it happen, Tim!

I have 3 physical sythersizors and over 40 software sythersizors but Made My best music when I was restricted to just 3 software sythersizor devices, and today regularly go through My music catalogue back as far as 2006 to get sounds that sounded good but can now sound great with My current knowledge. I think restrictions enhanced My creativity, and having so much stuff today dont = better music.

8:05 I think you hit the nail on the head here. The content of MANY synth videos on TH-cam revolves around new gear, reviews and affiliate links. Coincidently I thought just the other day about this fact and how content is being created around the constricts and business model of TH-cam algorythms. The machine of money shaping art. Well, I guess that isnt new, is it? Cheers, I love your content.

Hello Tim, always find your videos interesting and well put together so thank you for continuing to share your thoughts and music. The justification of what gear you use and own is entirely up to you and I think many on the internet forget that some of us have bought and chosen our instruments over a number of years / decades and so what we use is sometimes familiarity, sometimes it's a particular sound that inspired an idea and it's nothing to do with capabilities. Often times it just boils down to people being jealous and forgetting that we've had to work and sweat to get things for our hobby (or need) to make music.

He sleeps most of the day, is occasionally mischievous; but I love him to bits. I hope Mister Scrunge returns to your family soon. Best wishes!

Dear Tim, for me, the point of any synth is that it is a sound source, and many of the songs or ideas for songs have started with hitting a patch or modifying a preset, experimenting with the sound, and that sound inspiring a new idea. It doesn’t matter if it’s the sound of a sine wave on a Synclavier or a Casio, if what it leads to is a creative spark. Keep doing what you’re doing 👍🏽

Hi Tim, thank you so much for making these and other videos on TH-cam. I'm only recently getting into Eurorack and your videos on the Behringer system 100 series have been simply brilliant (admittedly they are a couple of years old, but new to me :) ) . I own a lot of non modular gear, but find myself tweaking stock patches rather than really making sounds from scratch. My justification for getting into modular at this point is to force me to learn more about patch creation, i.e. as a next stage in learning. I'm certain I could make the sounds I will be making from the modules (when they arrive) from the gear I already own, but it isn't the point. I think sometimes learning from new gear can make you better with existing gear.
So glad I've found your channel, love your music and content.

For me owning and talking about gear, considering what might be cool to own next etc is the main part of the fun! Of course you don't need any of this stuff if you're aim is to be a music creator, a computer with VSTs is enough to create music.
It depends what you want out of it, it's a hobby for me and there is almost no way I can justify some of the synths I own but I love it!

I fully agree with you on the side of inspiration. Writing music, like most artistic creation, is first and foremost a process. At the end of it, wether or not the final composition retains any of the idiosyncratic signature of the instruments used to write it is an irrelevant question: the main function of those instruments is, first and foremost, to stimulate creativity.
Quite often with analog synthesizers, the very process of sound design plays just that role : it produces semi-random outcomes in which fun musical ideas can be extracted and later developed.
It is all about the journey, man !

I think you nailed the point on the head here. We don’t need to justify our synth choices, collection, or what have you, to anyone. As long as you can afford it, why not?
My theory is that some people wish they could own some of these instruments and perceive that they would be able to use them to their “fullest” potential (whatever that means), and are therefore jealous and lash out at those who they perceive are not using an instrument the way they’d like.

This really hit me at my core. I struggle with justification and occasionally am plagued with guilt over owning my rig (or any of my hobbies). It's taken me decades to build my creative spaces and the root question after all of it has been is it worth it. Oftentimes I thought this question was to be answered by the results of quantity and quality of tracks that have been released. But honestly the most important thing about all of this to me is to have fun. Collecting the gear jamming and hooking it up in different ways brings me a very positive and good feeling. Hi Tim! First off... The song is legit! Go ahead and hire that vocalist!! On justification. Don't need to justify anything. I can't justify anything in my studio. I don't make music for a living. I'm an electrical engineer that was inspired by an Isao Tomita recording in high school band 48 years ago. I listened to his compositions on the Moog modular and was so taken by it all, I just told myself... "I want to be able to do that some day." And... I can. My day job supports my habit. 21 hardware synths and counting. Eight of them Moogs. The latest one an over priced reissued 2022 Model D. Why? Because I always wanted one and it was available. Maybe a modular some day... Who knows. I always love your videos. Very informative, Often inspirational. I loved the whole package on this song. I had listened to it on my television speakers and it rattled the metal. So, I came up to the studio and put it on my KRK R8s and KRK 12" sub. YES!!! that was what it was supposed to sound like... Keep up the good work sir!! The joy of music is the only justification that any of us need.

Maxing out each instrument for the sake of it isn’t making music. I think you get that sort of attention because you are a well respected synth guy. Take those comments as backhonded compliments. Happy New Year.🎉
