To me, the swords represent fire because they were forged out of molten earth in fiery furnaces and they can kill like fire. Earth is represented by the wands because it represents branching out and going forth like a plant grows and using the earth as a foundation. The cups are water because they carry liquids. The pentacles are air because they represents the lofty goals of materialism and how the process of technology drives us to the skies.
