    FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over five years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off TH-cam? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
    Thanks for watching!

First time in Paris we stayed near Place de la République, and we loved it there. We walked all over Paris, and used the Metro (thanks for the tips on how to get around btw!)
Montmartre was at its best when we went behind Sacre Coeur (I hope I spelled that right, my Swedish is way better) with a less hectic feeling to it, and also places where you could have craft beer with the excellent food (very important to have beer that compliments the food). We gave the Eiffel Tower a miss, but enjoyed walking through the Jardin deTuileries (we're history nerds, and I was only missing my rapier and my outfit so I could challenge some lout to a duel! Alas, I didn't even bring my rapier. Besides, I'm more of a "sword and board" person and I suck at French...)
It was also a very hot summer, scorching even. But it was fun, nice place to visit and I'm glad we did it!
Oh, just have to ask if you've been to Musée Cognacq-Jay? We liked it. Small, open, and lovely! And you can't hate the name... :-D
We used to do one European city outside of Sweden every year until the pandemic. 17 years in a row :-) Time to start again and see where we end up next year....

I;m going to send one of your videos to my friend who studied cooking Paris so he can see what you're doing and if he knows some of the places you visit. There is a wine bar in the next block where I live. It was formally a funeral home. They have live music on the weekends which I can hear outside. I watched this year's Bastille Day Parade on You Tube. It was very impressive. You mentioned that the French firemen has open house at their stations so maybe since Covid us going away they are having them again. I'll hsve tro catch up on the videos I missed . My niece has a French bulldog and he is really cute. They named him Tito after a pupular vodka. I'm sure your dog is a good compan to you. Did you go to any 4th of Juky parties. I'll have to catch the fireworks later. We had a nice dispkay here . I can see it from my porch. Take care and I'll look forward to your new videos. Happy Bastille Day !

Don’t miss the Hotel de Soubise (archives nationales). Enter the courtyard (free) and admire the fantastic architecture. Another favorite is the intimate and little known Musée Cognacq-Jay that hosts a collection of pastel portraits by Quentin de la Tour. Moreover, Carnavalet, Victor Hugo’s house and Cognacq-Jay permanent collections are free museums. Other fine museums in the area are the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du judaisme, the Musée national Picasso and the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature. All those places in stunning architectural mansions…

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson  ปีที่แล้ว +6

I need to put some thoughts down, but basically just keep an eye on disruptions to transportation with an app like CityMapper, and be aware that you might have plans interrupted between Bastille and Republique, or even along the river near the National Assembly. It's rare that anything will ever erupt into violence, but the longer any protest goes (and the later into the night) the more likely it becomes, so keep your wits about you. That said, it's always interesting to go and see a protest in person. The French do it right. The current situation is similar but also really different to others in recent history so I'm going to need to do some research and hopefully have some more specific advice to give.

Not to say you should have your wallet in your back pocket. Other tourists cancelled so we felt it was less crowded as well. 11:54 One little thing about that name. The neighbourhood's and market's name comes from a Catholic institution from the 16th century that took care of orphans and had its seat there. The name "red children" itself is unclear but it comes either from the fact that the kids taken care of by that institution may have worn something red as a uniform or that they were regarded as "red" because they mostly came into orphanage from the death of their mothers in labor, thus being covered in blood at birth
12:39 Similarly, the Temple quarter is named after the famous Knight Templars, who had their headquarters there, almost a small city inside Paris. The knights were purged and burned at the stake as sorcerers and devil worshippers by king Philip IV on the westernmost point of the Île de la Cité, where there is now a very cute park. Legends say that the Grandmaster of the Knight Templars, Jacques de Molay, cursed the royal line with his dying breath causing the succession crisis that devolved into the Hundred Years War, and the Capetians dynasty from Philip IV onwards are known as the Cursed Kings (also the name of a best-seller book series, adapted into a historical series on French national television in the 70s, which is now beloved classic and actualy was an inspiration for GoT). The Temple's main tower was kept despite the purge and the supposed curse of the Knights, and was converted into a prison, where Louis XVI and his family were locked up during the Revolution. It was finaly demolished under Napoleon, who feared it would become a symbol for the royalists, erasing the last trace of the huge fortified monastery of the Knights.

Hey, Erin ! The National Archives were formerly "Hôtel de Soubise" ("Hôtel" in French does not only mean "hotel" like in English, but also a huge private mansion in town, generally aristocratic). This property belonged to one of the most prominent aristocratic French families, from Brittany : the House of Rohan. Duc de Rohan, duc de Montbazon, prince de Soubise, prince de Guéménée… all those titles were theirs. The hôtel de Soubise, which was famous for its luxury, was built in the XVIII° century over an older and medieval property, the "hôtel de Clisson". The turrets you can see are the remains of this one.

How Le Marais has changed since I lived there in the 1970’s.

Is it better to explore the Marais on a weekday? Debating going tomorrow or Tuesday, lol

Weekends can definitely be packed - and Mondays are closed - so Tuesday sounds like a decent option =D

The 3rd, haute Marais is “not Le Marais technically”?? What are you talking about Jay? Love your videos but you got this wrong. Check the history.

So we tried some of your suggestions and sorry to say but they aren't good imo....
    1. Pelaton cafe is super overpriced, underwhelming and has the most basic choices. The squares across the street have far better options, taste better and are much cheaper. Pelton is super touristy.
    2. BHV is super expensive. You find all the same stuff at 30-50% prices across paris. It's trying to be Galaries Lafayette. We went during black friday sales and still found everything expensive. Zara, Mango, Ikea, JD sports had better offers and are stones throw away.
I am sorry, but If u are getting a cut u are super dishonest. Unfollowed.

Thanks for your feedback! I don't get a cut from anything I recommend, and I purchase everything out of my own pocket. Peloton pricing is actually normal for specialty coffee in Paris, and there's a lot of tourists because, well, they run a tour company ;)
I think perhaps what we like simply doesn't align, and that's okay. There are lots of people giving advice on Paris, and I hope you find the content creator who vibes better with what you're looking for.
