Your first super has rabbit misspelled, Kev. Love, Chris... Would love to see more Acoustic Research stuff... Clearly the marketing folks at some speaker companies have figured out that 18-count Irish linen grill covers seem to be appealing to some people and can command a pretty penny.
Im 48 and just bought my first vintage receiver, a Sansui Seven. I’m blown away by how nice it sounds. Now I know why you guys like these vintage amps, love your channel. Wish I would have gotten one sooner
In 1975 I was in the Navy, I was 18, and I had my first real spending money. $168.00 every two weeks! I bought a Sony TA-1130 integrated amp. It was beautiful. My favorite piece is my 1974 Marantz 2220b. My son gave it to my 10 years ago. It worked great but looked awful. I bought a new faceplate, new lamps and new vellum paper and it looks stunning. Walking on The Moon by The Police, From The Beginning by ELP and Blue Collar by BTO are my system show off songs. Great video today!
I went from a Spin Clean to a Humminguru, I have put over 400 records through it so far since last Christmas and I couldn't be happier with it. Great video!
Appreciate the tag, Kevin. The main difference between us HiFi TH-camrs and the VC crew is that we actually have a pipeline of gear and a planned schedule for our videos. Meanwhile, the VC folks seem to just wake up and wing it with whatever topic crosses their minds that day. Your questions are interesting, though, so I’ll make the effort to squeeze in a response episode. Can't wait to see others join in.
Great video Kevin. There are so many pieces over the past 40 years that I wish I still had. In fact, I just bought an Akai GX-F31 cassette deck on eBay which was the tape deck I had in college in the 80s. Nostalgic and great sounding.
It's much more modest than most of these answers, but I just finished restoring an SX-780 - caps, op amps, discrete output packs, the whole deal. Maybe it's the sweat equity talking, but it's made me start relistening to my collection top to bottom. With my Vandersteen Model 1s, it's a great mid-level vintage setup. "Six Blade Knife" by Dire Straits is my go-to test tune! Very uncongested mix, and the hefty bass will quickly show if a system is overly bloated in the low end.
Ive lived 2 hifi lives … before adulthood and kids and after First love was marantz 2245 and snell acoustic speakers Technics turntable and hitachi cassette 2nd life changer was an old nikko na690 integrated and a set of locally made (in newburyport massachusetts) EPI 201s speakers That was 20 years ago Ive progressed to a mcintosh c11 and mc240 driving ADS L12330 which dethroned my ADS L810/2 Amazing ADS,EPI, Snell all made with 20 miles of my house I recommend the 1230 theyre amazing and so easy to drive Thanks for the videos !!
Great video! Thanks for the TH-cam channel recommendations, I am already following about 60% of your list and I’m now following the others. Thanks for your honesty and all you do to promote vintage equipment.
Great video Kevin, A pair of REL T5x sub woofers made me listen to my collection again especially my Salsa music. Feels like the percussionist are in the room with me.
Enjoyed this Kevin….brought back some great memories …..dating to the late 60s. What a great hobby….approaching 70 and really enjoy listening to music on my vintage setup as well as my main room. Finally got my dedicated room that you talked about……game changer! 😊
For me a favorite piece of gear oh boy that’s tough because I got so much but if I had to pick one thing out, I would say my Infinity Kappa 9 speakers.

My first was a closeout Dynakit Stereo 70 power amplifier, my Dynakit PAS3x preamplifier (I kit built those), Dynaco A 25 loudspeakers, and an AR-XA with Shure M75EJ cartridge. This was age 9, as a young disabled music lover. I've been in audio ever since. Earned the money buying this as a young studio engineer.
Kevin, anyone claiming that you stole the Sansui @ $40.00 is just plain jealous....Good on you for finding it, it couldn't have gone to a cooler dude. Thanks for the new vid, really enjoyed both the questions/answers. Also, hoping Pops is doing fine these days. Enjoy what's left of your Sunday!
Great walk through and a very modest swing (as expected)! Just listened to Fever by Ray Charles...lovely, and no farting woofers over here. 😃 And yes to the ADS 2030's. Love my 810's a ton!
Very intriguing questions. This is stuff that I have not thought about in a long time, if ever. So, let my brain work and I will be in touch soon. I will start here. The Pioneer SA 800 INTEGRATED got me started. I still love tons of options Thanks for the Vid.
The ADS 1230s I purchased in 1983 sound so good, that I haven't bought another pair of speakers since. Since '83, I've heard lots of speakers at various sound shops that I could also be happy with, but none that have wowed me enough to part with the 1230s. The 2030s are the ultimate. Of course, you need a listening room big enough to accommodate them. Also, if you can find a pair, the drivers might need refurbishing from ADS guru Richard So.
First Hi-Fi bite 1.) A Beatles record player, wish I still have it. I took it apart so I could meet the lads inside. 2.) Fell in love with Beveridges, but I worked for them, so I'm a biased. 3.) My favorite test record changes but Enya did some great test sounds. 4.) I mod, build and repair so I hear most everything, but am loving my Yamaha CA-R1. It has pre-out/amp-in and a killer phono pre. 5.) My Audeze headphones are super revealing. Love 'em. Yeah, this is fun!
Fun idea Kevin 1. Name the first piece of gear that led you down the hi-fi rabit hole? NHT SuperZero XU's and a Hitachi HA-12 2. Name the favorite piece of hi-fi equipment that you currently own? Threshold PCX 3. Name the product you bought that you regretted. Bic F12 subwoofer 4. If you could only use one song to demo your stereo system, what would it be? Radiohead Everything in its Right Place 5. If money were no issue, what is your perfect system? I'd like to try Krell and Magicos in my studio 6. If you had to choose one music format, what would it be? Streaming 7. What's a stereo product that people love that you just don't understand? Headphones 8. What is your next upgrade? DIY speakers or a/d/s 810's 9. A piece of equipment that you've kept in your system for looks alone Marantz Model 22 in a wood case 10. The last piece of equipment that made you want to re-listen to your entire music collection. Sutherland Little Loco Phono 11. What is an accessory that has come out recently that you can't imagine living without? Wiim streamers
Kevin, there is one more question that I would have asked; "What is the most non-linear item in your sound system?" The answer, of course, is your ear, especially as you grow older. You might want to go ahead and hook up the Pioneer equalizer.
Great subject Kevin loved the fact you bought up Reel To Reel i just rebuilt a Teac x2000r love them also have a Teac x1000r both silver. And as far as holy grail also is the Sansui BA 5000 for me too. love me some vintage sansui...termiteaudio
I have the x1000r machine. Unfortunately the pinch roller assembly is gummed up. Will not engage in play mode. Can’t find a video describing the lubrication process.
Just found your channel. its cool... Learning some stuff.... One idea (might not be your cup of tea) is to do a top 10 boom box/ portable radio best of.... Of course I had my favorite which I bought new as a teen in 1987 (saved up for a year) , the Panasonic RXCD-70..... The high water mark....
Had a blast with ya, Ed! Thanks for coming and clocking in on the sales floor. I felt like I got a first-hand peak into your Hifi sales days- very impressive and fun to watch you in action. I'll be looking forward to the video!
How did the British Invasion go? Great video. I agree with you on streaming. It's my go to source. Having millions of songs at your finger tips is mind blowing.
Great choice to play Fever by Ray Charles & Natalie Cole. I never heard it before and it does push the speakers. It tells me my Yamaha RX-350 receiver, Infinity bookshelf speakers with my 8” Auvio sub sound fantastic. I knew it already but this just confirms it. Now I need to do some rewiring of my Bluetooth device so I can hear it through my Yamaha CR-840 receiver and Rectilinear Lowboys. 👍
So its Sunday night, well technically now Monday, its 2 am! After I watched your great video, got out of bed and turned on my stereo to listen to Fever! Awesome sound from my not vintage equipment. Marantz SR8015 with an EMOTIVA XPA-3 Gen 3 and Martin Logan Motion 60XTi. My one vintage piece is my turntable I bought back in 1979 and still works perfectly! A Technics SL-3300 which I treasure. Would love to find some vintage equipment. My first amp, a tube HHScott 222C I inherited from my dad (1968) still sounds in my memory. Maybe one day I’ll get lucky and find a bargain! I went way over budget on my current system and will probably live with it for my remaining years (currently I am 71)! Lucky, I am very happy with it. Really love it. Thanks for the nice videos and hope your dad continues to get better.
As I was always was told.... put your money into speakers, and your turntable cartridge. The stylus turns Physical media into electrical, and the speakers electrical into acoustical. It is the transition that is critical. I repaired a set of Kirksaeter Monitor 150's, hooked them up next to my HPM100's. I sold the 100's.
Great recommendation on Ray Charles album Kevin. I just picked that up based off your comments. Ran it though my ADS L1530 via Yamaha MX-1000. Hope one day you'll get the chance to listen to the L1530's .
My "go to song" for testing a sound system is "You've Made Me So Very Happy" by Blood, Sweat and Tears. Lots of deep bass to check the bottom response of the speakers, good percussion (drums and cymbals) and vocals and horns; plus it's great to get a sense of the "sound stage" that the speakers present (amazing with a Polk SDA system that really extends the sound stage beyond the speakers). The other song to check the low end response is by Crosby, Stills and Nash, "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes." I just listened to both on my computer and although the system is good, it didn't make me so very happy, compared to the Polk SDA speakers.
For myself, this was pretty thought provoking. And I have not had NEARLY as many components, bad or good. Because these days I am relegated to apartment living, I have downsized a great deal and will never have the kind of sound most viewers have.
1: Pioneer SX 3700. 2: Technics SL-1300. 3: Audio Technica AT-LP120. 4: Boston Foreplay/Longtime. I like 2 channel rock. 5: McIntosh amps! 6: Streaming. 7: Separate headphone amps.. 8: Not sure yet. Too many things I am looking at right now. 9: ADC equalizer. 10: A streamer.
Great video. I regret not having a friend like you in the 70s. We lived in podunk Iowa and if you had a transistor radio you were cool. I hope your business helps you get your audio room you desire. Thanks again for all the information you share.
Really enjoyed your video. You are quite a humble guy. Very admirable. Mainly, I wanted to thank you for the HumminGuru recommendation. I just had a Spin-Clean delivered the other day and I just didn’t feel right about it. That feeling has its genesis with my disastrous bout with the Discwasher brush cleaner in the 70s. Ugh. So, thanks again!
I bought my ADS 910's w/ magnesium stands new years ago upgrading from the original model Bose 901's and I went through and listened to every record hearing details I had never heard before. I still have the 910's in my living room in perfect condition but haven't listened to them since 2007
1. Marantz 2238B 2. Marantz 2238B 3. Surround system 4. Track #8 on Alegria ~ Cirque Du Soleil (Mirko), track #12 is also very good. 5. Big ADS, vintage McIntosh, a really nice CD player 6. CD 7. Streaming 8. Room treatment, or a listening room built from scratch 9. N/A 10. ADS L780/2s 11. Schiit external DAC for my CD changer
Hmmm...As a former jazz radio DJ, I want to say, "Loose Change" from Ron Carter's Great Big Band for #4. But, since my answer to #6 is vinyl, I have to go with "I've Got The Music In Me" (the title cut) from Thelma Houston's Sheffield Lab Reference LP. Both are super clean and natural sounding recordings from top to bottom.
I just bought a Harman Kardon AVR - 130 with the remote on Facebook Marketplace in mint condition for $50 and although it`s only 40 watts per channel it sounds awesome!
@@skylabsaudio Thanks! Although I prefer something from the 70`s or 80`s the really cheap gear is from the 90`s and early 2000s as most people have caught on to the vintage craze and charge accordingly. Love your channel, thanks for the reply!
Great video and ive thought of getting one of those reverb units just for the looks alone... As for speakers my main setup is L810s which ruined every other speaker for me...I still like to try other speakers but I always come back to " The 810s sound better".
Oof...this is going to be tough. Mind you, I did almost all of my collecting (music and equipment) back in the 70s and early 80s. So, my collection was from new equipment. Here it goes and I apologize in advance. 1. Name the first piece of gear that led you down the hi-fi rabit[sic] hole? Pioneer SX-737. I didn't buy it but it was what the family bought when we got our first stereo system (prior to that it was a Gerard turntable plugged into a NutTone intercom system...from the 1960s. But from that Pioneer, my journey and fascination/hobby began. I still have it too. 2. Name the favorite piece of hi-fi equipment that you currently own. That would be like picking a favorite child (I only have one, so perhaps that is a bad example, but you get my meaning). Each piece was auditioned, worked for and acquired. If I had to pick just one...probably my JBL L250 speakers. 3. Name the product you bought that you regretted. Easy...Threshold Stasis S/500 amplifier. It isn't that it is a bad amplifier. Quite the contrary. It is VERY good but...at the end of the day, for me, the bang for the buck wasn't there. I'm as happy with my Yamaha M2 as I am with the Threshold and at a fraction of the cost. Furthermore, the gain structure on the Threshold was so different than the rest of the system that it was clearly designed to be driven by the Threshold preamp (which I didn't have and had no plans on getting). I love my Yamaha C4 preamp and it works great with the M2 amplifier. I guess i just needed to stay in my lane, on that one. 4. If you could only use one song to demo your stereo system, what would it be? I normally use a collection but since the you say to limit it to one..."Money" by Pink Floyd. It hits a lot of needed criteria. It is one of the best mastered recordings. I has a lot of dynamic range, lots of stereo separation and will show up if the system has imaging issues or not. 5. If money were no issue, what is your perfect system? It is tough for me to say because I didn't really listen to too many things out of my price range. But, likely it would involve McIntosh electronics for the preamp/amplifier (I'll always be a separates guy over a receiver or integrated/tuner guy). Probably Revox over my Teac/Tascam reel-to-reels. Speakers are always subject to revaluation. I now have JBL M2s, which are better than my L250s. I have not, personally, heard anything I like better than the M2s but my mind is always open. 6. If you had to choose one music format, what would it be? Let me begin with why I don't like your pick of streaming...you don't own it. You have access to it, which is great but you are just renting it, at that point. It is all too easy for the terms to change and you lose what you think you have (and they've tried doing that already). So, I will always pick a physical media. Probably, I'd pick vinyl as it should last almost indefinitely, if stored well. I think reel-to-reel is the best and is my preferred medium but so much in the world has to be in operation to support it (tape manufacture, tape head manufacture being some tricky ones to get right). Vinyl is archaic enough to be easy to figure out by most any society with, at least, 19th-20th century intelligence. It will survive. 7. What's a stereo product that people love that you just don't understand? I'll have to get back to you on that one. I'm not sure I can think of a particular product that fits this category, at the moment but perhaps I'll think of one. I know I didn't get "Snell" speakers back when they were oh-so-popular in the '90s (or seemed that way). But, like you, I've enjoyed my Cerwin-Vega! (S1) speakers knowing full well they were not the most accurate ones out there 8. What is your next upgrade? None planned (other than a listening room, like you, but I'm flexible) 9. A piece of equipment that you've kept in your system for looks alone. Heathkit VU meter (an LED one) 10. The last piece of equipment that made you want to re-listen to your entire music collection. JBL M2 speakers. 11. What is an accessory that has come out recently that you can't imagine living without? N/A (I haven't shopped or bought anything for stereo in a long time, aside from CDs).
I owned a pair of ADS 810s before the 1230s. Then I made the huge mistake of selling them and purchased a pair of Ohm Walsh 2s. Within weeks, I sold them, and purchased the 1230s. They have the same driver compliment as the 810s in a much larger cabinet.
Great questions Kev, but let me do just 2 since I'm not really a collector. Your first question as to introduction came when I was 16 and was on a weekend with dad parents being divorced. We went to his apartment and dad and his room mate were going out somewhere, can't remember where and they were floored that I just wanted to stay behind and hang at the apartment. That's because his room mate had an SX 1050 staring me in the face and I just HAD to get at those controls! This has to be 77 I think, I put on Ace's An Ace Album on and was blown away even at the lower sound levels. My fav piece of music if I were to demo? Has to be C+C Music Factory "Ooooh Baby". This tune captures all freqs your system should be able to replicate...actually the whole album does. Thanks for the vid.
1. Harmon Kardon HK340 Receiver. I was in the 6th grade I think when my dad gave it to me and even through high school it sounded better (but not louder) than what most other kids had 2. SMSL DL200 DAC/Preamp 3. HK 430 Twin. Sorry, but I got one to recap and upgrade transistors etc. and it still only sounded OK to me. 4. ELP Tarkus It has lots of complex and taxing bits that can test from the DAC to the speakers. I also just know it really really well. 5. I don't think about it so I can better appreciate what I have 6. FLACs. That's a format, right? :) 7. Giving up real media you own for streaming 8. Better speakers for my desktop system 9. I love the sound of my Allison 9s. But the fact that they also really look cool has helped keep them from being replaced. 10. PSI A17s then a set of Event Opal Powered monitors then a MOTU M4 interface and now my SMSL DL200 DAC/Pre 11. Great vintage HiFi TH-cam channels
My rabbit hole got me with my Dads stereo. This was 1973. By 1976 I bought my own amplifier, a Realistic SA1001. In 1980 bought my first Dual turntable. Other than a new receiver in 1987, the Realistic STA2700. I never looked back. I never stopped using it. Only added another STA2700 and 9 more Duals. My test records are any Phase 4 London albums
A song to test out my system definitely jazz at the pawnshop album. Just trying to think they’re all good tracks on there for Fidelity. High Life on this album.
I have a plumbing company in the area. We could sure put in a backwater valve so your sewer cant back up. If you're in Des Moines, they offer a rebate.
Anybody that tells you it can never backup is wrong. It is not a perfect seal, stuff builds up in them and they need maintaining. It makes it better for sure but not perfect.
I could not afford something during the 70s so I made my own -- used it for a long time. I recently purchased a Marantz 2245 and am trying to purchase a new Cambridge Audio Evo One! I sure love good music!
This was excellent Kevin!... the very first gear that sent me down the rabbit hole was buying a Kenwood KR 3400 receiver from my local HiFi store, it was a demo on sale, think I paid just under $200 in 1974. As far as accessories, I still love my vintage ADC sound shaper 2-IC, because it looks so cool when it's lit up. Lol You got an awesome deal on your Sansui amp.. I wouldn't feel bad about getting that deal either. You paid the man what he was asking for it. Nothing wrong with that. Not sure how you would feel about these as test songs for audio equipment, but how about Jethro Tull songs from the wood? Or Lou Reed intro / Sweet Jane from The Rock and Roll Animal album.. Or Barracuda by Heart, 1977..... All have lots of great highs and Bass. Play them all really loud or just play them just because their great Tunes to listen to. 😊 Hope your dad is doing better. And wishing everyone a great weekend
#1) First piece of equipment: Sony/Superscope portable stereo open reel "tapecorder" model TC530 ? (circa 1969..). Had its own built-in stereo amp & speakers. #2) Favorite piece of equipment I own: Vintage SONY TA-2000F Pre-amp, purchased as a store demo in 1975. Re-capped in 2006. Entire line-amp gain stages re-designed and re-built in 2014. Also #9) I keep it around and re-built it mainly for it's design, looks and versatility. #4) One song that I use to Demo: Steely Dan - AJA. via MoFi original gold-CD. (circa 1988) #10) Added a (budget) 12in sub-woofer in 2003. And then last year when I upgraded the plate-amp (from 150 to 300 watts) and new speaker.
cool video. One would have to wonder how many of those BA-5000 amps were made in total when new? Likely not a lot. Was an expensive piece back in its day. Then how many from that are still laying around.
My first piece was that same HK. My mom brought it home one day. She won it somehow. KIOA radio I think. I had that for years. It went to college with me where I bought some used ARs. I don't remember what happened to that HK. Maybe you bought mine.
How about the gear you regret selling ? Mine would absolutely be my Pioneer SX-5590 that I bought in 1999 and sold for $600 that same year but overnight I had 4 kids to take care of and my wife and my step kids needed me to put them first and that I don't regret. But realistically if I could find a Sansui AU 919 within my now Social security budget that would be nice as a substitute lol
For me I was immediately drawn into the game in or around 1970 when my uncle came back from Vietnam and brought gear home from the PX exchange in Okinawa, Japan. Fast-forward to 79 he’s getting rid of some of his gear and he gives me his Teac a 4010 S reel to reel and that was my beginnings of having my own gear also at the time was also given a Technics SL 1400 turntable.
$40.00 for that Sansui nice. If that's all he wanted was $40.00 can't pass that up . I wished I never sold not one but 2 Yamaha preamps for $50.00. Now I'm looking for one for my Soundcraftsman.
1 Pioneer SX-727 $10 garage sale, don't have it anymore but wish I did. 2 Kenwood TK-66 I know not spectacular but I love it. I have nothing that is considered expensive. (have Sansui's, Pioneers, Kenwood, Sherwood, Allied etc) paired with Harmon Kardon CD player through Infinity Sm-82's, and Jensen LS-4b's Works good in my apartment. 3 Old Scott receiver, don't even remember the model number. sounded bland and those knobs broke easily 4 Al Di Meola - Cachaca 5 I would have to discover that 6 CD for me. but you are so right about having your collection at the ready. 7 Many and I can't think of one at the moment 8 When I leave my little apartment I will let you know 9 I can't say, I fall in love with vintage stereo stuff so easy 10 Every time I hook up a new Receiver 11 to be discovered Great video. Might I ask for some hifi on the cheap idea's? I'm a po boy 😎👍
15 years ago I gave someone what they were asking for a pair of Klipch cornerhorns at 500.00. They are cir. 1980 in raw Burch. I love them. Probably worth 2500.00 at the time.
Ah come on Kevin, no FM tuner in your dream set-up? Local community supported radio stations will always be my favorite and listening to local human beings spin their personal picks adds spice to life!
My favorite stereo system demo song is The Pink Panther Theme from The Best of Henry Mancini Volume 2. I found this album in my parents collection. It is in near perfect condition. There are no vocals but the instrumentals are so good you don't need vocals. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
$40................You got a Good deal, I am sure there are plenty of Bad deals. So it all evens out. Need to get that Kenwood G9000 shirt to match my Black face G9000, This and my Marantz 120b FM Tuner, re capped, cool Blue LEDS, are my flagships. Pioneer RT 909 w/ 10" Reels my wish list. Have a Pioneer SX D7000 so had to have the matching Pioneer re-verb.
We sell them all the time, I tell them my opinion flat out and they still buy them. I'm glad they do because it's just my opinion and if they like sound then I'm happy for em.

Your on top of it.
Thanks Kevin.
That's an awesome story on how you acquired your Sansui for $40...dayuuuum! That's a beautiful piece of vintage gear.
I love it!
Excellent video. Enjoyed every minute of it. Your channel is the first thing I look for every Sunday morning. Great way to start the day.
Glad you enjoy it!
Im 48 and just bought my first vintage receiver, a Sansui Seven. I’m blown away by how nice it sounds. Now I know why you guys like these vintage amps, love your channel. Wish I would have gotten one sooner
Love the Seven! So good
In 1975 I was in the Navy, I was 18, and I had my first real spending money.
Thank you , Mike
Now I want to listen to some old police with sting
@@karaDee2363 The cymbal solo is the highlight of the song. LOL
Great questions and answers (I think 99.9% of us need a better room). Thanks Skylabs.
Cool! Hope some of the other channels pick up this thread. Fun format.
i do too
I went from a Spin Clean to a Humminguru, I have put over 400 records through it so far since last Christmas and I couldn't be happier with it.
Do it! Quick easy brainless content and fun to boot. They shouldn't get all the fun and easy stuff!
Great video Kevin. There are so many pieces over the past 40 years that I wish I still had. In fact, I just bought an Akai GX-F31 cassette deck on eBay which was the tape deck I had in college in the 80s. Nostalgic and great sounding.
Right on!
I owned an Akai GX-F31 deck. Gave me fantastic recordings.
Love those 780s- perfect amount of everything
Ive lived 2 hifi lives … before adulthood and kids and after
First love was marantz 2245 and snell acoustic speakers
Technics turntable and hitachi cassette
2nd life changer was an old nikko na690 integrated and a set of locally made (in newburyport massachusetts) EPI 201s speakers
That was 20 years ago
Ive progressed to a mcintosh c11 and mc240 driving ADS L12330 which dethroned my ADS L810/2
Amazing ADS,EPI, Snell all made with 20 miles of my house
I recommend the 1230 theyre amazing and so easy to drive
Thanks for the videos !!
Definitely gonna be a fun one
I feel the same about my L810s as you do. I picked up a pair for $800, they're mint, and they're awesome through my Pioneer sx 939.
Enjoyed this Kevin….brought back some great memories …..dating to the late 60s. What a great hobby….approaching 70 and really enjoy listening to music on my vintage setup as well as my main room. Finally got my dedicated room that you talked about……game changer! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it

Thanks for watching!
What made me want to listen to my entire collection again? After I stumbled onto a EICO HF87 tube amp at an estate sale for $40, my first tube amp.
All great gear
Kevin, anyone claiming that you stole the Sansui @ $40.00 is just plain jealous....Good on you for finding it, it couldn't have gone to a cooler dude. Thanks for the new vid, really enjoyed both the questions/answers. Also, hoping Pops is doing fine these days. Enjoy what's left of your Sunday!
He gets better every day. Thank you!
Great walk through and a very modest swing (as expected)! Just listened to Fever by Ray Charles...lovely, and no farting woofers over here. 😃 And yes to the ADS 2030's. Love my 810's a ton!
You have a real talent for these videos!
I’m a barely interested in vintage audio, semi local guy just sayin hey.
Great Job!
First Hi-Fi bite
1.) A Beatles record player, wish I still have it.
My speaker of choice is the Polk Audio SDA SRS II. Just love them!

Heck yes, can't wait to make a video response to this, thanks for thinking of me!
Thanks for being a good sport Aaron! Maybe you can sneak that Sony in :)
Hopefully we both get one!
I have the x1000r machine. Unfortunately the pinch roller assembly is gummed up. Will not engage in play mode. Can’t find a video describing the lubrication process.
I have seen them come up from time to time but I don't want to sell body parts to buy one. 😫
I make my video on this, this week. I had a great time with guys Saturday, Thanks for including me.
Had a blast- Thanks. Beyond tired from it though, in a good way.
@@skylabsaudio cool!
My favorite Demo song is "The Voice" by Moody Blues
Thank you
As I was always was told.... put your money into speakers, and your turntable cartridge.
The other song to check the low end response is by Crosby, Stills and Nash, "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes."
I just listened to both on my computer and although the system is good, it didn't make me so very happy, compared to the Polk SDA speakers.
For myself, this was pretty thought provoking. And I have not had NEARLY as many components, bad or good. Because these days I am relegated to apartment living, I have downsized a great deal and will never have the kind of sound most viewers have.
Some of the best times I can remember listening to music were in my apartment and listening on some pretty janky equipment. Its all relative!
Thanks Bruce, we would have been buds for sure.
Awesome, thank you!
I bought my ADS 910's w/ magnesium stands new years ago upgrading from the original model Bose 901's and I went through and listened to every record hearing details I had never heard before. I still have the 910's in my living room in perfect condition but haven't listened to them since 2007
Very nice!

Great idea, it was fun making the reply video!
Thanks again!
My channel is super tiny but I’m gonna go ahead and tag myself and make a video answering these questions this week!
Put a link to your vid in here. Thanks!
$40 for a Sansui AU-20000. My God! What a deal.
I was lucky to get a Kenwood 650 integrated amp recently. That's making me want to rehear my collection.
I just bought a Harman Kardon AVR - 130 with the remote on Facebook Marketplace in mint condition for $50 and although it`s only 40 watts per channel it sounds awesome!
a score is a score!
Yup, same
Oof...this is going to be tough.
(S1) speakers knowing full well they were not the most accurate ones out there
8. What is your next upgrade?
None planned (other than a listening room, like you, but I'm flexible)
9. A piece of equipment that you've kept in your system for looks alone.
Heathkit VU meter (an LED one)
10. The last piece of equipment that made you want to re-listen to your entire music collection.
JBL M2 speakers.
11. What is an accessory that has come out recently that you can't imagine living without?
N/A (I haven't shopped or bought anything for stereo in a long time, aside from CDs).
Good list. Thanks
I owned a pair of ADS 810s before the 1230s. Then I made the huge mistake of selling them and purchased a pair of Ohm Walsh 2s. Within weeks, I sold them, and purchased the 1230s. They have the same driver compliment as the 810s in a much larger cabinet.
Try ENO’s, Saint Emo’s Fire off Another Green World. It’s got everything for a sound check, it’s very complex and musical.
Yeah great bass on both of those albums for sure!
1. Harmon Kardon HK340 Receiver. I was in the 6th grade I think when my dad gave it to me and even through high school it sounded better (but not louder) than what most other kids had
2. SMSL DL200 DAC/Preamp
3. HK 430 Twin. Sorry, but I got one to recap and upgrade transistors etc. and it still only sounded OK to me.
4. ELP Tarkus It has lots of complex and taxing bits that can test from the DAC to the speakers. I also just know it really really well.
5. I don't think about it so I can better appreciate what I have
6. FLACs. That's a format, right? :)
7. Giving up real media you own for streaming
8. Better speakers for my desktop system
9. I love the sound of my Allison 9s. But the fact that they also really look cool has helped keep them from being replaced.
10. PSI A17s then a set of Event Opal Powered monitors then a MOTU M4 interface and now my SMSL DL200 DAC/Pre
Good stuff!
A song to test out my system definitely jazz at the pawnshop album. Just trying to think they’re all good tracks on there for Fidelity. High Life on this album.
About 76 I bought a Pioneer system for $1450 US. The most impressive component were the HPM 100's. Simply just good
I have a plumbing company in the area. We could sure put in a backwater valve so your sewer cant back up. If you're in Des Moines, they offer a rebate.
Thanks! Good to know
Anybody that tells you it can never backup is wrong. It is not a perfect seal, stuff builds up in them and they need maintaining. It makes it better for sure but not perfect.
40 bucks! Once mine is restored I will
Be 4k into my au-20000!
You won man! You paid what he asked. It’s a feel good story.
How do y’all dry the records you clean in the shop ultrasonic cleaner? Just a clean microfiber? Any other tricks you’ve discovered?
Drip dry with a fan is what we do
I'd avoid the fan and buy a bread slicer to drip dry. Saw a youtuber that used one and bought one. Works pretty well.
I could not afford something during the 70s so I made my own -- used it for a long time. I recently purchased a Marantz 2245 and am trying to purchase a new Cambridge Audio Evo One! I sure love good music!
2245s are excellent. We have EVO Ones for sale on our site- Skylabsaudio.com. Hopefully shipping soon!
@@skylabsaudio I have actually one on order through your store! Just waiting for it to arrive. :)
Another great video Kevin. Is your dad doing better?
Yes, thank you. Every day :)
Lol
You got an awesome deal on your Sansui amp..
Hope your dad is doing better. And wishing everyone a great weekend
Thanks Kara. Love Lou and his Velvets! Dad is doing better everyday :)
Growing up in Kansas City I understand the wet basement. Living on the east coast in a newer house is great for dry basements. 😂
Someday!
#1) First piece of equipment: Sony/Superscope portable stereo open reel "tapecorder" model TC530 ?
(circa 1969..). Had its own built-in stereo amp & speakers.
#2) Favorite piece of equipment I own:
Vintage SONY TA-2000F Pre-amp, purchased as a store demo in 1975.
(circa 1988)
#10) Added a (budget) 12in sub-woofer in 2003.
And then last year when I upgraded the plate-amp (from 150 to 300 watts) and new speaker.
Those Sony's are sweet
cool video. One would have to wonder how many of those BA-5000 amps were made in total when new? Likely not a lot. Was an expensive piece back in its day. Then how many from that are still laying around.
I'm amazed every day how much of this stuff is still out there
Great video Kevin
Glad you enjoyed it
Sky Lab find the guy and give him another $60! Lol!
I scored a pair of JBL Control 5 monitors for $39. Ebay auction, nobody else put in a bid. Cost me $60 in freight, but for $100, I'm in all day.
My first piece was that same HK. My mom brought it home one day. She won it somehow. KIOA radio I think. I had that for years. It went to college with me where I bought some used ARs.
I don't remember what happened to that HK. Maybe you bought mine.
Possible!
Nice "Questions TAGS" video. Your ADS speakers, Do you normally keep the Speaker Grills ON or OFF when listening? Thanks for sharing Kevin.
Grills on for me with my ADS- I have the metal grill version
@@skylabsaudio Got it, ADS L810/L710 Metal Grill version are on my radar.
No apologies necessary… you found a good deal on that Sansui
Or did the Sansui find you?
lol, it found me for sure!
I worked at a stereo shop in the mid 80s. Billie Jean by Michael Jackson sold most of the receivers I demonstrated.
Yup good one!
Sky Lab that Sansui AU 20000 is now selling between $7,800 to $10,780. Absolutely incredible!
Every dog has its day :)
I would like to Answer Question 4 only... Dave Grusin "Shop 'Till You Bop" from the FAbulous BAker Boys movie music soundtrack.
Good stuff!
3 Old Scott receiver, don't even remember the model number. sounded bland and those knobs broke easily
4 Al Di Meola - Cachaca
5 I would have to discover that
6 CD for me. but you are so right about having your collection at the ready.
7 Many and I can't think of one at the moment
8 When I leave my little apartment I will let you know
9 I can't say, I fall in love with vintage stereo stuff so easy
10 Every time I hook up a new Receiver
11 to be discovered
Great video. Might I ask for some hifi on the cheap idea's? I'm a po boy 😎👍
Being patient is the only key to getting cheap deals, IMO
15 years ago I gave someone what they were asking for a pair of Klipch cornerhorns at 500.00. They are cir. 1980 in raw Burch. I love them. Probably worth 2500.00 at the time.
Ah come on Kevin, no FM tuner in your dream set-up? Local community supported radio stations will always be my favorite and listening to local human beings spin their personal picks adds spice to life!
I do listen to some Sunday blues on KGGO in my garage :)
@@skylabsaudio Nice!
I'd like to try a Rogue C lll tube amp.
With the two kids in college bs years here, it's going to be a while.
I love my ADS 620's.
Plenty of bad deals. You are absolutely correct
The last piece of equipment that made me wanna re-listent to my entire music collection my Infinity Kappa, nine speakers
Yeah, I like those too!
You paid the asking price, what’s wrong with that, right? You scored!
I agree on the Hereseys. I was a Klipcsh dealer and I could not sell them because my feelings were very apparent.
We sell them all the time, I tell them my opinion flat out and they still buy them. I'm glad they do because it's just my opinion and if they like sound then I'm happy for em.
ADS 2030 are my dream speakers too. They go for way more than $2500 though.
Yeah, I try not to look, lol
