In STEM fields people interested in industry do postdocs usually to acquire high demand skills. If your advisor, committee and colleagues are not helping you answer these question then there is an issue with your graduate program.
Wow, that sounds like an amazingly supportive set of supervisors and mentors! In social sciences, industry post-docs are still not as common - but point taken that there may be areas in which a post-doc leads to genuine skill-building.

Let's be honest here. Really talented PhD's from top programs get TT jobs - the rest get post-docs. And if you decided to do your PhD in a so-so school - you don't even get a post-doc.
