    I got into cooking with ghee this year to be healthy. Turns out it's also very tasty and now I prefer ghee to butter for eggs and some other uses. Here is a demo showing the difference in cooking.
    Ghee is a class of clarified butter that originated in ancient India and is commonly used in South Asian, Iranian and Arabic cuisines, traditional medicine, and religious rituals.

      BaconOrButter clarified butter has the water taken out ghee is taking out the water and the soluble fat

    • @tanyas6643
      @tanyas6643 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thomas Beck “clarified butter” is the English translation. “Ghee” is the same thing in Hindi (Indian language.)

    • @tanyas6643
      @tanyas6643 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thomas Beck uh... wrong! First of all... fat is not soluble. Try it. Dump some oil, ghee, melted lard or melted tallow into water. They will float on top of water! That means they are not soluble. Secondly... you turn butter into clarified butter/ghee by cooking which evaporates the water and settles the milk solids in the bottom of the cooking vessel. The strained out liquid is pure butter fat! That’s what ghee (aka clarified butter) is!

    I first tried using Ghee for frying eggs about 2 months ago. I made my own, using Land of Lakes unsalted butter. It didn't take but a couple of tries to learn that I liked the taste, and the convenience. At room temperature, this home-made Ghee stays semi-liquid, so I can keep it handy in a squeeze bottle next to the stove.
    About a week ago, I happened to notice that my grocer had Organic Valley Ghee. Though it doesn't need refrigeration, (and says so on the container) it was in the butter / margarine refrigerated section. So I picked up a container to try.
    Even at room temperature, the Organic Valley Ghee remains semi-solid. Though it readily melts when put in a warm pan, I do miss the squeeze bottle convenience. But then again, I didn't have to "make" it. :) I guess that's an even trade, huh?
    As far as taste goes, I don't think that I could identify them in a blind taste test. Both are good. And both cook cleaner than butter, as you demonstrated.
    From a cost perspective, they are pretty close. The Organic Valley might be slightly more expensive, but if so, only slightly.
    Thanks !

      once butter heats up it basically becomes unstrained ghee so that explains why the taste is very similar. only if u use very low heat (as you should with egg) will butter taste like butter because the milk solids in it wont brown.

    So good and very healthy with Omega 3's Vit. K2 etc...Good stuff...I make mine from heavy whipping cream whipped in a processor or blender until it turns to butter...Pour off the left over milk/whey which can be kept and used for bread making...Then take the butter mass and cook over medium heat, milk solids will cook and fall to the bottom of the pan and the remainder will be your Glee...Strain to get the particles in the bottom of the pan out...Can eat those as well...And the Ghee will look much like light golden oil because that is essentially what it is...Great oil for the face...Massage onto your face for five minutes, leave on for ten...

    This is just obsession with foreign cultures (turmeric, quinoa, etc). People even claim that clarified butter is "healthy" in a mix with cream, essentiall undoing the clarification. The amount of milk in a chunk of butter is too miniscule to affect digestion. Clarified butter does give me freedom with temperature. I usually go through a lot of eggs and fat: about 60g on 400g of eggs per meal. So clarified butter is only for special occasions.
