Headed over to Abilene along with a dozen other enthusiasts to record this FS&S 500-SHTT located at Kennedy Elementary School on Kuney Street. In the beginning of the video you can hear their 7T downtown on City Hall getting toned out before the rest of the system. The sirens in Dickinson County are tested every Tuesday at 12:00 Noon weather permitting.
The rotating 3t22! This siren is very rare yet so iconic

Sweet! I love the raspy sound of a 10/12 500. I'm glad you filmed this today, the video came out awesome. Siren seems to be working fine as well

Probably been through many repairs if it sounds fine today.
This is by far one of the best sounding but rather raspy 10/12 port sirens
A strong 2 port undertone
Kinda surprised that these never took off and became more popular than the Thunderbolt; seems a single-motored siren with no blower would be more reliable and lower maintenance.
They would have been more popular if Federal Signal did not market them as a "Mid-Range" siren. They are also unfortunately not very reliable as their rotators are poorly designed, being belt driven and very often failing.
@@TrainsAreReallyCool Probably would've been more reliable if they went with a gearbox/chain rotator like ACA's P-series... but I guess the motorized rotator formula just works well enough for Federal that they still use it on the 2001 and 508.

Dual Tone Sirens should definitely be Put Back into Production! They Sound Epic! Especially 7/10, 8/10, 8/12, 9/12, and 10/12 Port Sirens!

I have a feeling this one came from Topeka Kansas when we updated our system, cause Abilene just got these a decade ago right?
I’m not too knowledgeable in Topeka’s siren system history but I believe you are right. They received these around the same time Topeka replaced theirs.
I know there's one on top of the veterans building near felker Park. Apparently the rotating belt is broken so wherever the wind blows that's where it chills. I rode by it a few times on my motorcycle and still sounds awesome

@@xtramayo3727 the same port ratio wouldn’t always give you the same tone. For example 500s sound nothing like an XT22 even though both are 10/12

@@xtramayo3727 it is almost the same actually. It is rated at 125dB at 100 feet, and the 10/12 allertors are about 123dB at 100 feet iirc. They might be 125 too actually but I honestly don’t think so

That’s because it’s a 10/12 port siren, where’s the common Thunderbolt 1000T is 5/6 port. Figure that 5 ports is half of 10 and 6 ports is half of 12 so that’s why they sound similar.

Pretty sure from what I’ve see on google maps, it appears to be a FS model 7t on top of city hall. That’s what you hear before the 500.
