Abandoned HO Train Collection - Does Any Still Work?

  • A few weeks ago a friend of my mothers was digging through some boxes and ended up finding a train set. There isn't much backstory on it however it's clearly been setting for decades. There were three different locomotives, one of which being unpowered as well as a bunch of different buildings and rolling stock. Many things are not in the best shape but could very well still be useful.

  • @ROBERTN-ut2il
    @ROBERTN-ut2il ปีที่แล้ว +8

    1) The Bachman CN unit is a GM Diesel Division GP40 2) All the cabeese are Santa Fe prototype 3) The little shanty could be for (among other things) a switch tender in a yard or for the operator of manually operated crossing gates - operated either by a series of rods and gears to elevate and depress the arms with a lever inside the shanty (along with a chair , maybe a phone on the dispatcher's circuit and a pot belly stove (don't forget the wood or coal pile next to the shanty) and things like oil lamps - both to see and mount on the gate arms at night with cans of oil for them, tools to work on the gates and an oiler to lubricate the bearings on the gates. Don''t forget the railroad or girly calendar and maybe some curtains made by the wife) or a crank handle that inserted into a hole in one of the gate bases and and cranks the gates up and down. In the old days or on a branch, the crossing guard could just have a red flag and a red lantern to manually control traffic and no gates at all. Many of these crossing guards were men who had been injured working for the railroad and were given an easy job as a sort of pension. Here in New Jersey, we had many railroaders of Italian descent and the soil is fertile, so some towermen and crossing guards planted gardens alongside their work place. Tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers were popular and after being harvested the wife would often can them and the husband give out some jars as gifts to his buddies at work. Sometimes it went to the length of making marinara sauce and canning that. 4) The passenger overpass brings back memories. My home town of Fanwood NJ had one with a roof over the 4 track main line of the Jersey Central just to the east of the stations on each side of the track. Today the CNJ is Jersey Transit and 2 tracks and the overpass has been replaced by a modern one designed to look like the old one imgur.com/po2id5h

    For the Canuckistahni algorithm.
    The MILW caboose is Athearn or Botchmann and is kinda prototypical. The body is Sante Fe (thank you, Robert N. I was thinking Southern Pacific...because everything Irv Athearn did was Espee) but the aluminum paint was a Milwaukee Road test scheme to improve visibility at night.

    Nice haul! I recently picked up that same Nickel Plate Road flat car at my local train show back in January, it came with a small plastic model plane (a Beechcraft bonanza I think) and the little structure on the flat car held the fuselage steady on it and the wings were removable and sat below it. Not sure if it was a set originally but yours might have the accompanying plane in that box somewhere possibly lol

    Nice hoard there. The two locomotives are a nice addition. What I would recommend is just add a drop of oil to the gears and give them a running session of about 30-45 minutes on the track. This will burn off any oxidisation on the commutator and they will run a lot better and be more responsive after that. Just clean off the oxide from the pickups will help as well. I really love older retro model trains besides the modern stuff. I assume the CN engine is a EMD GP40-2?
    Peter.

    • @SMTMainline

    Hi Harrison. I have not abandoned my HO collection but decided upon on HO DCC. The DC ones work fine. I service them and clean their wheels and strip those ringfield motors. The Intercity 125 headlights dont work because the bulbs may have got burnt. Must check. I was hoping to sell two dummy and two motorized units and the 2 class Bo Bo diesel locos and buy a carefully used DCC sound locomotive.

    Like most older Triang derived Hornby , Oscar Paisley is likely to have given some great coverage on it, as he has with that crane set :
    th-cam.com/video/u5Nh3kBFzaE/w-d-xo.html
    Also has one of the earlier Hornby Dublo diecast cranes before Hornby went broke and Triang bought the name and passed the remaining tooling to Wrenn. The original Hornby Dublo ceased production in Liverpool about 1963 or 64.
    Triang kept using their Margate factory and staff with the Triang designs and tooling.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know much about that specific model however I'm guessing it's die-cast in which case look for short circuits. If the wheels on the tender have rotated or someone wired something to the wrong spot it might be the issue.

    • @BMMEC6000
      @BMMEC6000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SMTMainline yeah it is of die-cast construction. The problem might be in the gearing I think. At first I thought the gears were stripped but they all looked fine to me. The valve gear doesn’t seem to be jamming either. It will run but at a certain point it will buckle, stop, and then continue running again until it comes back around to that point. If you try to put anything behind it aside from its tender it will make the most awful noise and barely move. I’ve got no idea what’s wrong with it.
