Jane Fonda said that this was the happiest moment of her life. She said she was praying obsessedly for her father to win which he did. She actually bought the rights of this movie so that her father can win an Oscar. She writes it down beautifully in her book My Life So Far.

Sidney Poitier did receive that kind of standing ovation in 2002 and it was for his lifetime body of work in the movies and what he did for his people cannot be overstated , but it was an emotional even before he spoke but then his most elegant magnificent speech that ever was on that night or any night!

I remember watching this in 1982. I was 6 years old then and this was my Father's favorite movie of all time. My Dad died of cancer in November of 2021. We were always very close. Thank'you, Jane Fonda. This was an incredible gift you gave to your father and it did get him his Oscar. You were way too humble at the time. This film was also an incredible gift to my Father and myself. It's one of my favorite films.
Last night I watched “On Golden Pond” for the umpteenth time when it was offered on You Tube. So it was especially meaningful to see this video offered for me to view on You Tube tonight. I am 87. My husband will be 90 in February. We’ve been married over 67 years. The first time I’d seen “On Golden Pond,” I’d thought 80 and late 60’s were OLD. Now I have 2 sons in their 60s, and Norman and Ethel don’t seem so old to me.
Henry Fonda knocked it out of the park, again, in On Golden Pond. His portrayal of an older man opposite Katharine Hepburn is a master class in acting. Well deserved.
Henry Fonda's performance was beautiful and perfect! At the time not much was known about dementia/Alzheimer's. The film made me cry as a teenager at the time it came out. It still makes me cry now in my 50s with a mother with dementia. Just a wonderful movie and performances.

I tell you christian, having watched once upon a time in the west over 200 times, being my favorite film of all time, there are two truly remarkable inputs from Henry in that film which demonstrate his incredible acting skills,... And whilst they are two separate scenes, only one word in total is spoken!!! The first scene is when Harmonica tells Frank he will never be a business man like Morton. Frank displays vulnerability and simply asks 'why?'. He totally immerses himself in character, realising he is a hired gun, albeit a good one, and the truth hits home. The second scene is the last two seconds of his role, indeed, his character's life. He has lost the shoot out, he cannot believe he has lost, and in his dying moments he simply HAS to know who the hell is Harmonica. As he takes his final breaths, with the harmonica unceremoniously shoved back in his mouth, he rolls his eyes and nods slightly whilst in pain, with almost a half smile in acknowledgement and understanding of the long overdue payback. All with a roll of the eyes. Two scenes, one word. You were right to ensure O.U.A.T.I.T.W should be acknowledged when reviewing his awesome catalogue. Thank you for that.
Can you imagine that Mr. Fonda's nomination for On Golden Pond was only his second. He was nominated for The Grapes of Wrath in 1940. He was not nominated for Mr. Roberts or Young Mr. Lincoln or Drums Along The Mohawk or The Oxbow Incident, or 12 Angry Men. He still is the best Abe Lincoln ever. So glad he finally got his award.

It must have been so hard to make that speech knowing that he was dying. But to still have him there and to have been able to share that with him before he died was beautiful and special.

I just watched it, too. He absolutely blew me away, from his way of speaking to to every movement he made, how he stood, how his eyes filled with tears in the scene where he tells Ethel he got lost in the woods, his absolutely moving words during his heart attack, and how he hid his face under the hat to not show Jane his tears. But the best scene was with Billy on the boat before the accident, when he said he was alright but his eyes told the sad truth. Overall a performance that completely captured every needed emotion to a t and filled the character with enough life to be both touching and believable. Holy shit, was he great. Along with Paul Newman, the only actor i can come up with to turn his last performance into his best.
I only watched the movie to see Henry and Katharine. Both talented veterans who earned their stripes with such tremendous talent. Also, he is a hero, being a World War II veteran of the US Navy. God bless you, Mr. Fonda, you much deserved this Oscar!❤

No matter how good the part, when you are cast across from Kate Hepburn, you know its going to take a miracle to be seen and heard. It does not actually take a miracle, but it takes the performance of your life. Most of this movie I was watching Henry, was moved by Henry, and felt the bittersweet pride of feeling truly loved by others, while in cognitive and physical decline. It was stunning work.
What a heartfelt speech. My parents are both in their 70s now and I don't know where the time has gone. For Jane Fonda to keep her head together knowing the significance of that moment is incredible. I think I would have fallen apart before managing to say a word.
Henry Fonda was part of the best era of Hollywood when they were real stars and not all hyped up cardboard cutouts like most of them today. Not all, but most. That's all I have to say about that.

I just watched this movie. It was exquisite. I am not a big fan of Jane Fonda but she was incredible here accepting on behalf of her father. I loved how she spoke for him, it was so obvious that all she cared about was representing for him. It was truly moving and eloquent. BRAVO!

If you have a father and daughter who have an impasse one would expect the parent to reach out and make amends . The lesson of on golden pond is that the responsibility lies on the shoulders of the one who is capable of reaching out to start the reconciliation . Instead of waiting for a lifetime Jane reached out and has that memory that no amount of oscars or money can replace. Yes Henry won but Jane won even more . It was very sad to lose Henry Fonda. But the more than bright side is he passed away with a great victory. R.I.P. Henry.
This was the first Oscars ceremony I remember watching any part of. My grandma tried to explain to me who Henry Fonda was, as this was literally the end of his career and life. When I later saw "On Golden Pond" on television, it resonated with me, because Fonda's character (Norman Thayer) had a relationship with the boy in the movie that was reminiscent of my relationship to my own curmudgeonly (to put it nicely) grandfather. Later, of course, I saw many of Henry Fonda's films (and Jane's and Peter's) and understood his incredible screen presence and authenticity. A well-deserved award.
My sister and I were on the sidewalk across the street from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion that day. We're watching the limos and I will never forget this: a station wagon pulled up. We all see this woman slide out from the back of the station wagon wearing a beautiful gown. Jesus Chris it was Jane Fonda wearing the dress you see here! I would LOVE to be able to ask her why a station wagon?! It's the last thing we expected. So her 💕💕
This is one of the best Speeches in Oscar history. I am so touched and moved by Henry and Jane Fonda's performance in this movie. Kate Hepburn is a TREASURE!! Henry Fonda was only nominated for 1 other Oscar for Grapes of Wrath. I was shocked that in his long career there was only 1 nomination. I also loved his performance in Roots, The Next Generations. Going back years, I loved his performance in 12 Angry Men and The Boston Strangler. Peter Fonda's Easy Rider was a Hippie Classic. I loved Bridget Fonda's small part in The Godfather Part 3. Jane is someone I admired so much as a Actress and a Human Being. First Film: Tall Story with Anthony Perkins, a long list of great performances, 2 Oscars, my favorites: Klute and Coming Home. I love on golden pond. I am not surprised by his win. My favorite scene is when his character is lost in the woods. When he made it he needed to see his wife's pretty face he would still be him. When we are lost I hope we all have the one we can run to especially now
I lived in a little town in AZ. There was one theater and two drive in theaters. If you wanted to see a movie, you had to watch what was playing or drive to Tucson. My best friend and I went to see this movie. It was hard to watch because you didn't want to think about your grandparents dying. We were just 12 at the time. But, I loved the part where she called him her night and shinning armor. She adlibed that line. I didn't know he won an Oscar for his role as Norman.

I first seen the movie on Golden pond on video cassette in the late 1990's. It was a great movie. Henry Fonda definitely deserved the award for his role. It's too bad he was deceased by the time the award ceremony was happening.
He should have won for 12 Angry Men, My Darling Clementine, Ox-Bow Incident, Mr. Roberts and about ten more film. It all just shows much about this award. It is too unfair.

Classy and moving. He should have also won back in 1940 for Grapes of Wrath, his Tom Joad was a character of tremendous depth and humanity. Henry Fonda died a few months after this Oscar win, as did Geraldine Page after finally winning Best Actress (on her 8th nomination) in 1986.

He was truly gr8. He is ranked 6th in AFI's greatest stars. He didn't care about screentime and always let the Lady Co-Actors have first Billing.

I just watched this movie. It was exquisite. I am not a big fan of Jane Fonda but she was incredible here accepting on behalf of her father. I loved how she spoke for him, it was so obvious that all she cared about was representing for him. It was truly moving and eloquent. BRAVO!

I am so glad that Henry Fonda won this award for he was truly a great actor and truly great in On Golden Pond which was a wonderful film.
Jane bought the property of on golden pond so that she could give her dad a role to possibly win an Oscar . What a wonderful daughter. If you have a father and daughter who have an impasse one would expect the parent to reach out and make amends . The lesson of on golden pond is that the responsibility lies on the shoulders of the one who is capable of reaching out to start the reconciliation . Instead of waiting for a lifetime Jane reached out and has that memory that no amount of oscars or money can replace. Yes Henry won but Jane won even more . She did right by a father that had a hard time expressing his emotion .

Wow! Such a loving speech. Jane Fonda, you are such a loving daughter. I especially like the first part, 'Oh Dad' and the last where you say 'We're coming over with this right away.' It was very sad to lose Henry Fonda. But the more than bright side is he passed away with a great victory. R.I.P. Henry.

This was the first Oscars ceremony I remember watching any part of. My grandma tried to explain to me who Henry Fonda was, as this was literally the end of his career and life. When I later saw "On Golden Pond" on television, it resonated with me, because Fonda's character (Norman Thayer) had a relationship with the boy in the movie that was reminiscent of my relationship to my own curmudgeonly (to put it nicely) grandfather. Later, of course, I saw many of Henry Fonda's films (and Jane's and Peter's) and understood his incredible screen presence and authenticity. A well-deserved award.
Henry Fonda's performance was brilliant and excellent in On Golden Pond.
Wow it was great seeing those great stars from days gone by especially my favorite Burt Lancaster.
My sister and I were on the sidewalk across the street from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion that day. We're watching the limos and I will never forget this: a station wagon pulled up. We all see this woman slide out from the back of the station wagon wearing a beautiful gown. Jesus Chris it was Jane Fonda wearing the dress you see here! I would LOVE to be able to ask her why a station wagon?! It's the last thing we expected. So her 💕💕
This is one of the best Speeches in Oscar history. I am so touched and moved by Henry and Jane Fonda's performance in this movie. Kate Hepburn is a TREASURE!! Henry Fonda was only nominated for 1 other Oscar for Grapes of Wrath. I was shocked that in his long career there was only 1 nomination. I also loved his performance in Roots, The Next Generations. Going back years, I loved his performance in 12 Angry Men and The Boston Strangler. Peter Fonda's Easy Rider was a Hippie Classic. I loved Bridget Fonda's small part in The Godfather Part 3. Jane is someone I admired so much as a Actress and a Human Being. First Film: Tall Story with Anthony Perkins, a long list of great performances, 2 Oscars, my favorites: Klute and Coming Home. A Great Lady. I call her Lady Jane because she is like Royalty to me.

Fonda has the greatest gap between first and second Oscar nominations - 41 years. Shocking that he was not nominated more often for his performances in MISTER ROBERTS, 12 ANGRY MEN, FAIL SAFE and ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA.

Funny enough, Katharine Hepburn holds the record for the longest time span between the first and last Oscar nominations, at 48 years.
She was first nominated (and won) in 1934 and received her last nomination (and win) in 1982.
Out of 12 nominations, she won 4 times.

I love on golden pond. I am not surprised by his win. My favorite scene is when his character is lost in the woods. When he made it he needed to see his wife's pretty face he would still be him. When we are lost I hope we all have the one we can run to especially now

I lived in a little town in AZ. There was one theater and two drive in theaters. If you wanted to see a movie, you had to watch what was playing or drive to Tucson. My best friend and I went to see this movie. It was hard to watch because you didn't want to think about your grandparents dying. We were just 12 at the time. But, I loved the part where she called him her night and shinning armor. She adlibed that line. I didn't know he won an Oscar for his role as Norman.

I first seen the movie on Golden pond on video cassette in the late 1990's. It was a great movie. Henry Fonda definitely deserved the award for his role. It's too bad he was deceased by the time the award ceremony was happening.

To this day I watch this movie And one of my favorite parts is the very beginning when the piano starts it brings back so many many memories. This movie I can feel and smell the past so much just by watching it and i really don't know why but thank you to all that made it.

Classy and moving. He should have also won back in 1940 for Grapes of Wrath, his Tom Joad was a character of tremendous depth and humanity. Henry Fonda died a few months after this Oscar win, as did Geraldine Page after finally winning Best Actress (on her 8th nomination) in 1986.
It's so nice that his competitive oscar came one year after his honorary one
