  • The long version of our build. Crash was caused by bad glue joint in wing servo mount. Company has replaced plane and Candela is currently rebuilding free of charge for our customer. We will stand by you until the end.... and even further,,,,,,,

    Sorry to see that happened, and glad to hear it got replaced. However, I bet that plane could have been easily saved with rudder! Looks to me like it stalled and crashed due to lack of pilot skill and not knowing how to properly use the rudder.

    I think what happens in a large group like this, it is hard for the pilot to concentrate because there are too many good ideas of what to do - followed by judgement if you mess it up. Basically, there is extra stress with all the extra people/pilots. Sorry to see that bird go down.

    Thats why I stick to foam and electric. I flew nitro,balsa planes in the 70's. There were very few crashes the plane ever survived that a can of lighter fluid and a match was about the only fix for it.I do remember a box full of motors and parts enough to make another plane but that usually took 6 moths to build. I helped my brother scratch build and cover many a fine airplane only to bring it home in a garbage bag,even on a simple mistake. Now I break out the super glue, a foam cutter and take it back out the same night and fly it again. My wife doesnt bitch about the fuel smell,I dont get it all over me now. I can even keep my stuff in the house now. Even in the winter I can fly,just find a gymnasium. Foam planes have come a long way in apperance and price. I realize its not the same as a nitro plane,But really it is. I can fly,and I am happy. Even my oldest daughter enjoys flying quad copters with me. She is 30. I found out spending a lot of money on a hobby is fine,but spending less and still doing something you love is even better. I hope you were able to get a new plane and stick with it. someday,I may invest in a nother nitro plane,but I doubt it. I enjoyed it when I was a kid,now I just want to fly,and not stress over crashing a $ 3,000 plane.

      My first plane was a pt40 it survived a lot. In my early learning phase it survived a leading edge strike to a steel barrel trash can and tgat plane was balsa. I've seen people do the same with foam and the result was pieces of plane.

      My first RC plane was a G.P. PT-40 as well. I got it from Tower Hobbies back in 89 for $99.00 with an O.S. .40FP, two rolls of MonoKote and two bottles of Ca. I still have the plane in storage.

    such a shame, that should not have happened. A wayward aileron should not have brought that plane down, he got too slow in the end & simply stalled it!

  • @martyapo
    @martyapo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    He seemed to have manageable control of it regardless of the aileron malfunction, kudos. Although the cause of the crash was a stall pure and simple (low airspeed combined with a relatively sharp turn combined with a tail wind = kersplat!).

    • @Candelaresearchcenter
      @Candelaresearchcenter  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct,,I yelled to give it gas,, but the pilot was not very skilled at rudder control only,, just to many things for him to focus on,, Normally I would have been beside him and taken radio but he had his own friend who was supposed to help in case of problems.. thanks for watching!!

    • @G56AG
      @G56AG 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I heard the pilot give it throttle just before the crash and was wondering why, we normally cut the throttle to hopefully keep the damage down a bit, IF we can think to do that, at that moment you are usually pretty overwhelmed so remembering to do that is difficult.

      I had a cheap nitro trainer that crashed. I tried everything, but it just spead up right into the ground. Took it home, and looked at transmitter a few months later. It was an old transmitter that I bought on ebay. I opened the battery compartment, and noticed the wires were shorting out. YEP! That was the problem, and I thought it was me that screwed up. Thank god I only paid $100 for it! LOL

    No matter who is the fault. A crash is always sad, especially for the owner ... too much comments complains with the pilot but in such a situation normally you have a few seconds to identify, keep calm and take the right decision to save the plane! Sometimes works. Regarding the cause, probably he will never get it. Better look on the next project! It's only happen with who flight.

  • @MasboyRC

    Don't use ailerons if your plane position at low altittude, just use rudder and a bit elevator for more safely.

  • @r-jschemes1032
    @r-jschemes1032 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    that was a tip stall! I have spent a lot of time with the full size and model and know them inside out. Very sad to see it crash but sadly that was pilot error that turned it in too tight you had no speed over the wing when you pulled. I would also recommend that you use rudder in the turns some left rudder would have prevented that you could see the nose was in the air begging for that rudder. on that note hope you find a replacement and have much love with it! remember its only a toy aeroplane at the end of the day and these things will happen.

    • @thatairplaneguy
      @thatairplaneguy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Crash was pilot even in failure was factory. I could tell from the crazy swings on takeoff that the pilot wasn’t much of a stick and rudder pilot but more of a bank n yank guy.

    He had it made it was flying straight and level until tried to use one aileron to turn try and make the runway. Should have made shallow turns keep slowly reduce throttle keep it straight and level just fly it like you only have rudder and elevator. Years ago I could only afford 3 channel radio so that's how I flew planes with no ailerons. He could have gone around a few times making shallow turns turn long final stable decent to the runway. I don't know why people try to bring a plane in as soon as they have trouble I always try to climb get control of it unless I have no control at all I will cut the engine let it crash away from people. Once you climb try to figure out how to fly it then plan a landing.

    Heartbreaking, was a beautiful airplane, one thing I know the pilot was trying his best to save it but the throttle up just before the crash was a factor in the damage, if the throttle had been cut to zero then glide the possibility of a hard crash might have been avoided.

    I'm not sure to blame pilot here. He had plenty of altitude to bring this out of a stall or spiral, It looked like a control servo shit the bed in flight, maybe an aileron. Just saying.....

  • @mikewhite4628
    @mikewhite4628 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sad, sad, sad! With respect,it looked like a spin during that turn. A steep turn like that at that slow speed must have had some up elevator input. Could it be that the servo damage was caused by the crash. Really tough!! But a 'rebuild'??? I would have said a 'new build'. Sounds like a good firm to deal with…………...

  • @MikeMiller-fc2cc
    @MikeMiller-fc2cc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Crash wasn't due to joint failure.it stalled you can planely see that on the video, the reason your glue joint failed is because of burnt wood from lazer cutting there's no strength in burnt wood. all that burnt wood needs to be remove before glue-up. Look closely at crashed parts in video, on the 2 parts, wp38, there is only one glob of glue and burnt wood. no glue seam just one glob, sorry you also need to go back to basic building techniques.

    • @MikeMiller-fc2cc
      @MikeMiller-fc2cc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even after looking more closely at parts, I WOULD SAY, YEAH, YOUR RIGHT ABOUT FAILURE OF GLUE JOINT CAUSED CRASH. But you still need to sand away all burnt wood for good glue bond.
