I have found that my wife’s seam ripper works real good to cut open wiring harness without damaging the wires inside. I am a retired technician. 50 years in the business. I loved Toyotas.
Good video DIY. Since you plan to use heat shrinks on each wire, cut the two pin-wire with different length so the shrink portion or two deferent wires won't get on the same spot - this makes wrapping them easier. Plus reduces the chance if the shrink moved/broken you won't get a short.
I bought my 15 avalon new. Besides changing fluids, filters, brakes, and tires i have had no issues. 140000 miles later, and it still drives beautiful. Only problems are wear and tear on the interior.
@@FURDOG1961 I don't think he's had any problems with it or at least I have not heard if he has. Maybe ~5 years back when I drove it on a couple shorter trips, I thought it felt under-powered going up a snowy hill. (I don't think he uses snow tires though.) When I messaged my mom, she indicated he thinks it's around 90,000 which truthfully I thought sounded higher, as I didn't think he's driven as much these past couple years. If my parents are on board with me operating a "retirement home" for their old(er) vehicles, I'd of course handily take it some day. As my dad has entered his 70s, this possibly is the final car he will bother getting.
I think the reason it breaks is the harness is anchored to immobile housing on radiator support but the connector is on engine which moves back and forth.
FYI people. I bought on Amazon a pack of 2 connectors with pigtails from Alicatong store. Cost was $10.99 for the package plus tax. Received yesterday and installed today. Apparently these pigtails are for some models of Toyotas side marker lights. It’s the exact fit. Uses copper stranded wire. So if you don’t want to go thru the trouble of buying a connector from Toyota then having to buy pins and wire this works right out of the package. Just solder or use the enclosed crimp connectors. Hope this helps.
Nice repair. Soldering and heat shrinking were my favorite way of connecting wires. For #6 gauge or larger I used my propane torch for both soldering and heat shrink. In a vibration area I found crimping and soldering with heat shrink worked. You have to be sure there is a good mechanical and electrical connection. Good one AMD.
Always a pleasure to watch you problem solve & watch you execute the soon hands on. Also like to way you have salvaged parts & pins to save customer money & time. Well done. 👍😎🇨🇦🙏
I heat the work first, and then apply the solder to the heated work. This is because the solder has a flux core, and applying directly to the soldering iron tip burns off this flux, so I'll get inferior connections because the flux didn't get to do its job cleaning the work. An alternative to that is to apply flux manually. Then it can clean the oxidation off and the solder sticks better!
Yes, I agree with you. I suggest applying flux to the wires to be joined first, then soldering. Heat the wires with the solder iron and touch the solder to the wires. The flux should help the solder flow. That in turn should give a good strong electrical and mechanical connection. Kester brand flux should be helpful. Once the soldering is done, apply heat shrink tubing.
I love your videos with how much attention to detail you have, being a Toyota specialist in the UK I promote your videos to a lot of my customers, but this one I think you let yourself down on, that second piece of shrink tube, it was definitely nowhere near watertight and it would’ve been quicker to desolder the wire and put the correct size shrink tube on like the first wire, but that’s ok, that’s ok 🤣🤣🤣 keep the videos coming, you’re one of the good trustworthy techs out there like me! 👊🏻👍🏻
