The engine really suffered under Marchington's ownership. He took advantage of the engine having carried an A4 boiler since 1977 and increased the pressure to 250 psi. He also bored out the cylinders from 19 to 20 inches and made several other changes in an attempt to "improve" the engine. The Gresley A1/A3 frames simply weren't designed to deal with that kind of power output. It was already bad enough with the frames having to hold up the weight of the A4 boiler (A3 boilers were lighter). The engine was in the worse shape it's ever been in when the NRM bought it. Allegedly it was worse off mechanically than some engines you'd find in a scrap yard. The forward part of the frames were found irreparable and had to be replaced. Hopefully the work done to return the engine to its proper A3 specs and tip top running condition will negate the need for such drastic overhauls in the near future. The A3 boiler, built in the 1940s, was aquired from Salmon Trout during a 1965 overhaul at Darlington and used by 4472/60103 from 1965 to 1977. The A4 boiler was built around 1960 and bought by Alan Pegler as a spare around that time.
Thanks very much for this summary of part of Scotsman's mistreatment under preservation. I confess, I was among the crowds of wombles who said that for the money the NRM had poured into the project they should have restored the original cosmetically, then followed the A1 Trust's example and built a new A3 to replace her on the mainlines. Unlike most of them though, I meant it as compassion; the old girl's had a rough, long life, perhaps the longest and roughest of any steam locomotive in preservation. She'd earned a dignified retirement, and Tornado had shown that building a new steam engine is entirely possible. All this being said though, I do not begrudge the NRM's decision and I am so glad that the grand dame of the rails is back.

Yes. Underneath the streamlined casing of the A4’s, their boilers were mostly a development of the A3 boiler type.
really love this summery of Scotsman, I love that locomotive so knowing more about it is always a charm, do you think anything has changed since the NRM's been working with Scotsman? and I could be wrong but I heard she's going through an overhaul this year, if anyone knows do you think that'll put her back closer to her original A3 condition?

It's such a shame Scotsman was the only A3 to survive the cutter's torch, the last two survivors under BR; Spearmint and Prince Palatine would have been excellent machines in preservation. I suspect the A3s were very much overshadowed by the Streaks.
Samuel Smith Yeah it is a damn shame. Even then they didn't save the original A4s like Silver Link which is a damn shame. But we all know who to blame for the reason the original A1 Great Northern wasn't preserved. Thompson!

Papyrus (LNER 2750/BR 60096) should have been saved. She achieved 108mph on a test run in 1935.
I'd have loved Flying Fox to be preserved, she was a fine sister to Scot, being named after a racehorse, having the longest serving career of an A3 and being sadly scrapped in 1964. We could have had one in LNER green and one in BR green , the latter being fitted with "elephant ears". Scotsman could happily sit next to Green Arrow and Mallard at the NRM, and have Flying Fox take the mainline tours.

I laughed out lout at the Thomas and City of Truro references.
This video helped me to clear up some confusion about Flying Scotsman.

This locomotive is no doubt the most famous steam locomotive of all-time! It should never, and I mean NEVER EVER be scrapped! She was the first ever locomotive to surf and navigate the globe. I would like to see her one day, but I live in the U.S. Maybe one day I will.
Ah, Flying Scotsman. I was hoping for a SLIP about her one day. It's safe to say that her fame has been both a blessing and a curse. It's a great shame she's the only A3 left. Papyrus defiantly should have been preserved, as she was the world's fastest non-streamlined steam locomotive. Singapore made the fastest run between Newcastle and King's Cross by a steam locomotive, Flying Fox had the highest mileage of the whole class, and was the longest lived, and yet they were all brutally executed. If only there had been a Barry scrapyard for LNER engines. Alas, there was not, and we can only be thankful that Flying Scotsman is still there for us. The world's most famous steam locomotive, and an important part in the story of Britain's railways.
Wouldn't we all be allowed to sleep easier if Barry had purchased some more LNER locos like the A1/A3's, or a Silver Jubilee A4, as well as a couple of LMS Patriots.

I had an inkling that 60103 would get the 'SOLE SLIP' treatment sooner or later, and may I say, you've done that brilliantly as usual.
To add my penny's worth... You either love or hate her (yes I know, a cheap Marmite gimmick!), but there's no denying that she is a genuine icon of 21st Century engineering. And I admire her for that fact, regardless of the controversy surrounding the last overhaul and the subsequent stick that she got for it. 4472 (as I first got to know her as a 9 year old at Llangollen, in 1993), like many people, was one reason I got into railways in the first place, and became a good part of my life. And I hope that will continue for a long time to come, especially since she continues to draw the crowds and hopefully get more of the younger generation involved in the world of railways...

It's lots of things. Money, hype, attention seeking, resources, etc etc. But, everyone's entitled to their opinion and bias.

1) Probably just the price tag of the overhaul that many people are moaning about (I tend to ignore it myself, and just appreciate all the hard work that went into the overhaul, no matter how expensive it got)
2) As Chris suggests, 'Sole Slip' is sort of an accompaniment to his main series. The 'slip' is short for 'Steam Locos In Profile', and this particular accompaniment looks at single surviving locos, hence the name...

Yeah exactly there's been a lot more money wasted on things, and I believe this one was worth every penny.
Some people may say Scottie was a waist to restore, but that's not my opinion. Here in the states, we're restoring a locomotive that costed as much as Flying Scotsman's extensive overhaul to build (in modern currency). The engine in question is Big Boy 4014, and it's estimated 20 Million U.S. Dollars are to be put into restoring her, maybe even more now that they've got a better look at the damages. Now THAT, is a waist of money.

It's been sat rusting since the end of WW2. That, compounded with the fact she was an outside exhibit, she's quite literally a pile of rust.
Also on a side note they're converting her to oil burning, which will not only waist even more money on her restoration, it'll be a money pit like no other
Aye, definitely. Can she burn old oil like some of the fessie's engines, or nes? And a a low - oil time like this. I just wish we could have one of those old K&ESR 2-4-0 tanks that were scrapped in the 40's. One was used in "oh mr porter".
Yeah, Big Boys could burn oil real easily. Fact, at the rate she gobbled through coal, she'd go through oil like it were a cup of tea.
On the other topic, You could build a 2-4-0 for real cheap. Shannon was built at a machine shop (from my knowlage), and she costed about 17,000 pounds modern currency (which I would think is a pretty decent price for a steamer). So why can't we build a 2-4-0 tank for, say, around 20,000 pounds?
Probably easier to build two or more locos at a time as the costs in the main are the set up of casting components rather than the materials to make the parts.
CED does it again with a fine history of Flying Scotsman. I wish he could find a way to profile American locos

Great film. I was one of them who said it was a waste of money but seeing her on the main line and at the bluebell last week, it is great to see peoples smile and respect to our hobby caused by this loco. So for that reason she gets my respect.

Yes she cost a lot.... but what a loco indeed! The crowds will have helped the heritage railways throughout the UK.... and lets not forget they have to buy food etc in these local towns (helping the economy!). Great job as ever, Chris. Keep up the good work :)
Really the whole loco should have been examined as some of the cost was doubled to take apart and re-fix probably to a better standard than the orginal build.
He. But let's not dispute that. He's a locomotive not a person. Saying he or she is just a figure of speech. I say he because his name is Scott and because the name Scotsman although unofficially honours his founder Nigel Gresley who was a Scottish man.

Flying Scotsman is significant, important, and well worth the money put into restoring it. Few locos have had such a good relationship with the general public outside of train nerds that we need it to help keep the hobby going. Scotsman has a claim to fame, and a long and interesting history. 100 years on, and it’s live a good life.
I think the problem people have with Scotsman is we get the same documentary about it over and over again made by people who know very little about railways, while this on the other hand had some very lovely cinematography of the locomotive on the Bluebell and told me something new and makes me feel the opinion of an amateur historian with a passion is much more worth the money than a journalist or minor celebrity following the latest human interest story, this was a very nice surprise Chris, thank you!

You ask any none rail enthuast a question about steam trains, and they will reply with either "Thomas the Tank" Or Flying Scotsman.
Excellent Sole SLIP Chris! I was looking forward to you making one about the Flying Scotsman and I'm glad you finally made it! At 6:36, if you're referring to the time when Flying Scotsman came to the United States and needed other American locomotives to tow it like from New Rochelle, NY to Harrison, NJ, that was actually with electric locomotives, not diesels. Penn Central GG1s were used to tow the Flying Scotsman on the section of the Northeast Corridor from New Rochelle, NY to Harrison, NJ because steam locomotives in steam are banned in Manhattan. I don't remember seeing or hearing anything about a diesel towing Flying Scotsman in the United States due to legal reasons, except for the GG1 electrics to get it through Manhattan in New York City.

It's great that she's back in steam and can't wait to see her in Sept 2017 when she's at the West Somerset Railway, shame Mallard can't be put through an overhaul like Scotsman, it would be great to see the pair in steam side by side

It's truly a crime that Scotsman is the sole A3 to survive. With 79 of the class built and 6 A4's, 3 Duchess's and 10 Merchant Navy's surviving, there is no excuse for just one A3 to be left. More of these lovely machines deserved to be saved from the cutters torch. If we had 3 A3's, we could have Scotsman in Apple Green at the NRM alongside Mallard and Green Arrow, and one of her shedmates could run mainline tours.
My favourite Locomotive by far. I know that the streaks have a better reputation but Scotsman set the standard of speed at the time. It's truly a marvel to see it in action again. Though I'll say one thing, that might start the comment section: I think that Scotsman should have been painted BR Pacific Blue in 2016. Why you ask? because you barely see the livery and plus 60103 never had the livery so it could interesting to see, I know it sounds stupid but I honestly think that it would look nice on the girl

Nice one Chris. I watched The Flying Scotsman arrive, traverse The Bluebell, and depart back to NRM. The number of views on TH-cam is testament to the popularity. I've seen crowds, and I've seen the attraction that this locomotive offers. Yes a chequered history, but you made it an interesting watch, with your usual research and wit thrown in. Keep it up sir :)

As an American who got to ride behind this glorious locomotive when I was on holiday in England, I have never seen one locomotive get such a response. Every platform between Bristol and Taunton, plus seemingly half the fields up and down the line, were filled with people to see the locomotive. I've never seen anything like it in my life. Beyond that, consider yourself lucky to have mainline steam and be able to go see it at speed. The mainline railways over here, particularly in the eastern US, want nothing to do with letting steam run anymore. Seeing locomotives that are that gorgeous and of such historical importance is a gift
That problem is partly due to the fact that a good steam loco can go so much faster than most, if not all of your freight trains, which take priority. Even Amtrak has to wait, sometimes hours, for freight trains to cross or pass. In our case, a 75mph steam engine goes too slowly. It can hold up passenger trains - which are most of them - that want to travel at 125mph or even 140mph. Which is why we can claim to be recertifying steam locomotives to run at 100mph. As for crowds, you wait until the Union Pacific finish 4014. Then you'll see crowds. I'm tempted to combine a visit to my son in Texas, with a ride on a 4014 hauled excursion when she's finished. Union Pacific are doing a great job on their steam heritage and when their three main engines are all in steam, imagine what it would like to be next to 844, 3985 and 4014? I stood next to 4005 once and that was awesome. In steam it would be overwhelming.

Many thanks for a great video! And in regards to its' Australian tour (as I found out from a person involed with it all), oringaly Aus Steam 88 wanted to have the Flying Scotsman in the first place but never thought they would ever get her, so ask asked for Mallard instead, and the rest is history!
shadyhaze2013 Actually in 1987, one plan was to have a locomotive from China as a present to strengthen ties between the two countries but instead we were given two Pandas instead. This came from a railway magazine in Victoria called NewsRail with their special report about Aus Steam '88 and 4472 in Australia. There were also offers from North America I believe but they denied the offers.

But however, I do respect the fact that you are not a big fan of the locomotive mate. This video was well made as always. Love this loco she's a real pride and beacon for UK steam (though my love for the A1-4's is not nearly as much as the Princess, duchess and Scots 😊)
Such a beautiful locomotive. It’s a crime that she was the only A3 preserved. I love her in BR Brunswick Green with the double chimney and smoke deflectors even though shes was in LNER Apple Green in her pseudo-A1 configuration when I got to love her as a kid. As an East coast Scot I know I’m biased, but IMHO the LNER always has the most beautiful locomotives out of the big four.
Excluding Thompson’s designs, some of them were fugly. Looking at you A2/1,2&3s and the A10.
The Brunswick green that she that she is in now has to go! She only needs to be in Apple green!

As for the cost of the Flying Scotsman's overhaul, 1,000,000 pounds doesn't sound all that much for the work that needed to be done. Here in the States, a regular 15 year (coincidentally enough also referred to as a 1472 day inspection) costs between $400,000 to $600,000 every time one of those is required.
lol i think we are all jealous of how cheap it is (comparatively) in the USA. recently read average uk overhaul is north of 300k gbp and that is required every 7 yrs(expandable to 10). and yours seem to get by on less work, over here the mainline ones basically have to do 1 tour a week most weeks for 10 yrs ,and then beg, in order to meet the cost of next overhaul. US locos loike 4449 are hardly ever out yet seem to get by well enough.
Hi.my name is Phil I did 50yrs on the footplate I started at edgeley shed on the 4th of April 1961 I finished my time out at 9A as a driver but on the 19th of February 1973 I fired the flying Scotsmen from Manchester to derby works and on the 25th of August 1973 I fired lender from derby to Manchester it was red then Regards Phil.

Flying Scotsman has always been a favorite of mine. Coming from the land of the free and the home of the brave (yes, it's obviously America), I myself would like to fly over to England and get a ride on the Flying Scotsman's passenger train one day.

The spare A3 boiler was bought by Alan Pegler in the 1960s. Alan Pegler bought that boiler for Flying Scotsman's overhaul in the future. Alan Pegler gave Scotsman's boiler to the people of the National Railway Museum because he wanted the people of the NRM to save Flying Scotsman from scrap if he could not afford to run the engine in service anymore.
That’s where he wanted to Scotsman to go In the end!

I think the people who say spending more than 1 million on a loco are out of touch. Dozens of exotic classic cars like Astons, Bentley’s, Ferrari’s and Lambo’s regularly change hands for much more than that, and their maintenance or full resto’s cost similar amounts.
Obviously a car is much smaller than a steam engine, and those cars only do 50 miles a year with 1 - 2 people on board.

On my side of the pond, when a steam locomotive gets to her mandatory 1472 day inspection, that's it for the engine. Think of the few over here that survived a 1472 day and returned to service.
Only Nickel Plate 2-8-4 765, Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 261, Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 and the Union Pacific 4-8-4 844 ( notable for never being retired and donated or sold for scrap!) "survived" this regimen. That Scotsman has been able to survive the fiscal turmoil privately owned steam locomotives can get their owners into, c'mon Chris, admit that you're just not hot for her because she's such a cultural icon.

City of truro got to 100 mph first but it wasnt pulling a dynometer car so it wasnt official. However the Flying Scotsman reached the speed pulling the special car, therefore making it offiacally the first engine to reach 100 mph.
