  • It’s been a long time since the Vauxhall Astra mounted a realistic challenge to the leaders in the small family hatchback class, but this latest version has a shout. It’s good to drive, well equipped, competitive on practicality, and affordable to buy and run.

    It won European car of the year, but still not quite good enough? It's hard to admit that VW Golf has been dethroned when you're biest towards a certain brand all the time!

    I just got it. Red. Brand new. Absolutely loving it. My beloved old Rover 75 is gone and I'm here to confirm that the difference feels like riding an old honest and hard working horse (no disrespect here at all!) and riding a butterfly (?) Yeah! :-) BTW, there are such freaking ridiculous comments by snobbish, but not well off people, as it's always the case...hahaha. Usually they can't afford this kind of car, but they pretend they are driving something like Aston Martin. Pathetic Banana Republic attitude and mentality. Geeezzz...

      I’ve got a 1.6t. It’s a great car but slightly lacking polish. It’s a shame that the SRi is only a cosmetic trim. The MPG is strong and close to my outgoing 320d. I think the Leon FR is more desirable but there’s a big price difference!

      @@taylorthrall7321 people that say vauxhalls are unreliable do not know what they are talking about. i own a 2017 vauxhall astra sri nav along with a corsa b and they are fantastic cars. my corsa has 200,000 miles on it and still the engine has never let me down after 6.5 years. in fact ive never even had to top up the oil ever, apart from when servicing of course. the only reason its not on the road now is due to it being involved in an accident and rust issues. im fixing it up tho and had loads of welding done to it. ive not had my astra long but i love it, i cannot believe the guy said that the suspention is hard. its so soft, the guy is just lying. my dads also got an astra and its also a great car. also hes had a few vectras back in the day as well, and they were also great cars despite what the press had to say about them. so this is coming from someone that has a lot of experience with vauxhalls and i can say they are brilliant cars. i massivly recomend them. obviously they have their own common fualts but every single car made has a few. hope this helps

      @Redblade I own astra and can agree about the rolling. But about steering itself, not so much. Breaks are better in vag group, in astra k they don't bite well enough in my opinion. Manual transmission is also better in vw, in astra k it is a joke if you wish to push it.

    1.4 turbo elite nav automatic is the 1 to go for if you can stretch that far. Very comfortable and refined. Fuel economy is also good to believe or not.Or the 1 6 turbo with 200bhp.Its quick and will push 150 mph on a good day.we had ours 4 year not one problem. But manuals can suffer clutch and gear box problems when thrashed by boy racing red liner,s.

    BE CAREFUL DONT BUY THE ASTRA 2016 onwards. Poor engine design which causing them to have weak pistons that can go at any point. Costing thousands to replace. Not sure if they’ve fixed this but my 66 plate 1.4 turbo elite has this issue now. They should have recalled all cars and replaced these with the stronger pistons they now have. Mines been fully serviced every 6 months and done less than 28k miles. I bought it used 9 months ago and because it’s 4 years old it’s out of manufacturers warranty. I’m stuck on what to do to be honest. Just thought I’d warn you all so you don’t get fucked over like me. Still waiting for Vauxhall to come back to me but not holding out any hope they will take responsibility.

    is the Vauxhall Astra ever going to become a luxury brand?

    • @jamie9883
      @jamie9883 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely not, it's not aimed towards that side of the market. The Astra is cheap to buy, maintain and run, has been the same for years, and probably will continue to be like that.

    I owned one when they first launched in December 2015. had nothing but mechanical issues with it since day 1. the central. locking was tempermental. the fuel consumption was mostly good but would nosedive at random. limp mode was practically always on. very good handling and very comfortable but an absolute pain in the rear to live with. the boot floor was far too low down for most things too

    But not by much.
    Go ahead and call it cheap... a friend of mine drives a Ford Maverick.
    His wife a BMW X5.
    They rent their house.
    I live in my house and own other houses. People who feel the need to show off their money do not have any.
    For the record I drive an Astra J.

      They also don't talk about silly stuff, you know like suspension setup, brakes, wheels, dimensions etc...
      But they can't wait to tell us about the "new" and "improved" infotainment system(with the single core processor and the 480x240 dot screen), like we'll be buying a laptop or something...

    • @rbarrington8911
      @rbarrington8911 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +hyylo You do know that batteries in electric cars degrade and are only good for so long, right? People hesitate to buy electric cars for just this reason, which is why they depreciate heavily. Maintenance cost may be low initially, but when you're factoring in the inevitable battery change, long-term maintenance cost are probably still about the same.
