I was a junior in high school when this mine disaster happened. It was terrible. Part of it was telecast on TV on the local news. So many families lost loved ones. However, this mine disaster cannot be compared to Matewan. Thank you for bringing back some memories of the 60s Leo. This was an awesome video. Stay safe in your travels.

Leo, it was the most beautiful area in the 1960’s and 1970’s, 80’s to live. My BFF lived there with her mom.

The building in front of your mustang was the old movie theater. The large building across the road was the old Island Creek store and mine offices. I remember when I was a kid, just before the stores shut down, I had a toy western duel pistol and holster belt on layaway and got sick right before Christmas and was in the hospital all through Christmas. When I got out of the hospital, I told my parents that’s the first place I wanted to go to pick my layaway up, and they had sold it on me. I cried and cried cause that was all I could think of when I was in the hospital. I also got my first bicycle with training wheels there. I now have a dining room set that came from there that is stamped under the table and chairs, Island Creek Stores. I figure there aren’t many of the furniture from the Island Creek stores still around so I cherish it.

We still have furniture from the store purchased prior to 1965.

@@brandonraykirk2925 so many people nowadays are quick to throw that furniture away because it isn’t stylish today, never mind that it will outlast and is more durable than anything you can buy out of stores today.

How the bridge was named: I gave the idea to Logan County Clerk John Turner, who passed it on to a Holden 22 Reunion group, who got it done through the state.

The stream is Copperas Fork of Island Creek; the name, which predates the coal era, is derived from the color of the water. The color is unrelated to coal.

Holden 22 was located several miles away from this spot. This is what is called Main Holden. Even though Holden 22 was located out on Trace Mountain (where you can see a plaque dedicated to the deceased miners), it seemed like a good name for the bridge. But this spot is not Holden 22.

Does anyone remember the Jesus tree at Holden in the 80s?
Kudzu covered the trees in the form of Jesus praying.
    I hope He's still there.

I was back home visiting my mom when Upper Big Branch happened. We sat and listened on mom’s transistor radio on the back porch for any updates. Also listened to WSAZ reports and updates.
The saddest time ever, Leo and Heather. Ruined my trip back home. Daddy would have been devastated if he was still living. 😢😢😢

Leo, Lynch Kentucky is rich in coal mining history ! Our church went to Lynch twice and we stayed in the old hospital at night and did various odd jobs during the day to help people !! We were putting a new roof on this one elderly lady's home, it was a duplex {one big house split down the middle so 2 families could occupy the same dwelling} I stepped in the back door to plug in our extension cords and this beautiful lady was singing at the top of her lungs, about how her and Jesus had their own thing going, beautiful voice, well at the end of the day we were putting all our equipment away and went in to say we'd see her in the morning, she told us she didn't have any money to pay us so I spoke up and said "Ma'am we've already been paid in full" she asks by who?" I told when I was plugging in our power cords, I listened to her singing and that was enough pay for me"!!
