- Crystal Block cemetery is a cemetery near the old coal mining community of Crystal block coal mining company in Sarah Ann West Virginia. It has since been bulldozed by a gas company in 2004 and is supposed to not exist anymore.
After some serious effort.. Leo finds some evidence of the old cemetery as well as some headstones that until now, have been hidden on top of a mountain, lost forever.

The gas company was sued by the families of this predominantly black cemetery and the families won after a 6 year court fight. Glad they won because its horrible what the gas company did. Great detective work Leo & Heather!
I knew it ! Glad they won but probably put on the back page of the paper with want ads ! Dad always read that first ! Said that's where the real news was ! Sec, the obituaries! Last the front page ! Then you really see the lies !😊
❤
I'm glad they won. Do you know what's going to be done about it? Are they going to fix it and make it right? It's very disrespectful what they did, so awful.
I wrote an article about this cemetery in 2008 and a woman working on a book contacted me last year about it wanting to know where it was and if any graves could be located. I’ll relay your video to her. Thanks for the hard work.
@@Agemus6139, I would love to read your book and send the information whose family lived at Omar, WV, in the 1960’s and their name was Parks. ❤️
@@Agemus6139, was the lady, Mrs Cora Lee Hairston? She has written several books.
Leo it was meant for you to find this cemetery. Thank you for finding this lost cemetery and giving these souls a voice. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
This was probably the most captivating and compelling video thus far for me. I was right there with Leo's excitement when he found those graves. It's so sad that the families have abandoned them there also.😢
@@chefd.w.hostettler, most of the African-American families in that area have all gone now. The elderly have died and the young people had to leave to find work in NC, OH, GA, etc.
There should be a law preventing resting places from being disturbed. Hats off to you for your effort to locate and find these lost cemeteries
It does matter, thank you Leo. This resting place is back on the map🎉👍👋🙏
There is a law against disturbing a gravesite
Unless your on a mountain in WVA
@@deborahsmouse368 Just follow the money ! Bet was a local ruckus that never made the news ! Even the county said it doesn't exist
Greed and no respect makes me so angry. All the company had to do was just move the gas line over just a little bit.Shameful.Great job sir as always.❤️👍
Oh, Leo. What you put yourself through to share the stories of forgotten souls. I worry about you out there all alone. But, thank you
❤ , Me too ...
Great work Leo. Shame on the gas company for not doing a better job to preserve and document the Graves and graveyard. Whether there are headstones or field stones marking the Graves, they are still someone's love ones and ancestors. I think this one breaks my heart more because of the ancestors not having the chance to know where their loved ones are buried now.
That was dirty of that gas company. I don't believe for one minute they didn't know it was there. They just didn't care. Bless you and Heather for remembering and trying to find these lost souls. Stay safe Leo and keep on climbing.
Shame on the gas company. I do not for one second believe the gas company didn't know there was a cemetery there. Considering where it is they probably thought they would never be found out. Everything sacrificed to the almighty dollar.
I agree.
They paid the bulldozer operator to make it disappear....
That’s like when they built Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. They were supposed to move the cemeteries but I’m sure there was family cemeteries they didn’t know about. My great grandfather, great grandmother and great uncle are buried in that area in Pulaski Country. Sure wish I could find their resting place. My great uncle died of yellow fever while serving in the Union forces. He has a military marker.
That happened in Berea and Richmond, too. Owsley Fork Reservoir covered a cemetery outside Berea. Part of the Bluegrass Army Depot was built on top of a cemetery. Supposedly, the Army moved all the graves and correctly placed the tombstones on the right grave. Nobody thinks that’s true. There used to be Cundiff Apartments in Somerset, also supposedly built on top of a cemetery.
Thank you, Leo! It's good to know there are people like you and Heather in this world, people who care!
Thank you Leo and Heather for doing your hard work locating these graves. It is one thing to video them and show your viewers. But then put on Findagrave! You may never know that some family members will see your efforts. Get to know where their ancestors are resting. Thank you both again.
Great job Leo. The gas company needs to be held accountable. Thank you for sharing.
Being a genealogist It matters to me. They tried to do that to our cemetery that our grandparents are in, we stopped them, but for how long we don't know. Thank you Leo, and Heather.
Thank you for finding these lost folks! You can get the GPS coordinates and submit them to find a grave and the cemetary will once again be found! Great job!
You did it!!! You should get a small handheld metal detector to help you find metal markers
Thank you for all your efforts in finding the cemetery. God will richly reward you for this. I don’t know a soul buried there or any of their relatives, but I am sitting here crying. Thank you. Thank you. THANK YOU.
Very sad, that Dan Newsome stone really got to me, the poor kid was only 16 when he died and now he's laying up there forgotten
@@russharrison8524, I thought the same thing also, Russ. 😞
Same here. At least now he is not forgotten, and his gravestone will be on find a grave, hopefully with a little about his story
Big business think they can do anything they want. It's a shame that the graves were destroyed. I'm glad your trek through the mountains proved to be successful. Thank you, Leo, for another great video.
Tears of Joy!!!!
Leo vs The Mountain ( and the mountain didn’t stand a chance!) You my friend, are simply beyond amazing!! The effort and sweat you put into this is to be recognized. On behalf of those families, THANK YOU.
I am so proud to call you a friend. The world is a much better place, because of you.
RIP to the people there
Great Work Leo!!! I was as excited as you were when you started finding all the markers. 🎉🎉🎉 thank you for finding them.
What a heartbreaking lost life story. If I ever get lost, I hope you're on the search team.
Leo u are one of the greatest persons who never give up on your mission to bring solice to all of the lost God bless and you and Heather stay safe from one to another hillbilly out
I’m very happy for you, Leo and Heather that y’all found the loss graveyard that nobody thought was there anymore. That’s amazing.
That 'lizzard' is also called a salamander. When I was a kid (72 now) had to shut down a water pump, disconnect the pick up pipe and clean the squished water dogs off the foot valve. Later my mother who also worked for the farmer told me the boss came to her and told her what I did. He drove off and the water came back on befor he could leave the area.
Great job Leo and Heather bless you both for never letting anyone be forgotten!! Shame on the gas company that is horrible what they destroyed!!
Thankyou to you and Heather for all your hard work you do bring to history back to life. And I have to add I love your voice its so peaceful and your laugh makes me smile.
WOW , " God Bless You "
Leo that's totally amazing and wonderful✨ 🥰 !!!
I'm extremely excited and , your dedication is 💜absolutely incredible !
Thank 🙏you for bringing these stories and , taking us along !
Peace and Love ❤ ...
Oh my goodness! Dr Dana Moore from Omar was the doctor who was more or less the coroner of Logan County at the time.
This video is awesome! Thank you, Leo and Heather!
I have a friend who lives up Crystal Block Hollow ❤️
Leo, people use that spring water to cook their beans in. We had a spring up Pine Creek at Omar that people took buckets and plastic jugs to get the water. My Mamaw Bailey only cooked her pinto beans with that water. She fixed a pound of pinto beans every day of her married life with a pone of cornbread. She fed many who stopped by knowing Mamaw Dixie had beans and cornbread. ❤❤❤
@@suzybailey-koubti8342 Interesting, you should write a book.
Thank you for sharing all this beauty in West Virginia. 😇🤗 greetings from california.
Leo you found it! You did extraordinary work. You didn't quit. You should be so proud of yourself. Finding it is important
Yes! Leo and Heather never give up! Bless them, Lord, and keep them safe. ❤
Thank you so much for all your and Heathers hard work. Heatbreaking for the descendants but thankful you found their families
I jusy can't believe that gas company couldn't have taken a different route! This is just total disrespect! The work you do is awesome Leo and Heather! I love watching you hike up those mountains and makes my feet itch to go with you both. Keep up the great work!
Great work, Leo 👍
You really had to work for this one! So glad you were met with great success. It's like they were lost and you found them. Good job!!! Blessings to you and Heather.
💥What A Great💥 Feeling of Success I'll bet you had,Leo!!💥 I know you did, because I did just watching! That's a HAPPY DANCE MOMENT for sure! OH WAIT..
You done found some more!!! ( I'm commenting as I'm watching you!😂) Like I'm right there with you, talking to ya!😂YOU HAVE DEFINITELY EARNED YOURSELF A TALL COOL ONE!!!🎉 OUTSTANDING TENACITY, LEO! You Rocked It!!!💥❤🎉💯🥳🌷💞
I just found your channel this morning and I love it! Growing up my grandma would pile 6 grandkids into a ford Taurus and we’d travel to western ky down in trigg county and just get lost in the woods exploring cemeteries. While I still search for new areas when down there, I still visit certain graves when I’m in the area just because I somehow connected with them when I was younger. Thank you for sharing your adventures and keeping these people’s memories alive! ❤
Great but sad story and it matters to me! The gas company should have done things differently or found someone to do some documentation. Thanks Leo the mountaiin climber.and Heather the pc guru!!LOL
Such a shame that this has been hidden for so long. People deserve to rest in peace
Thank you for bringing us along. The company could have elevated their line and gone over the graves, or where they buried the line, just move the few they need to. Also, the music you chose is beautiful, yet wistful.
You are certainly getting quite the workout! Thank you for caring.
Please remember, Leo, we'd feel so bad if you got hurt filming for the channel. Be careful out there by yourself.
Great work, Leo and Heather! Thank you for making sure their stories do not go untold. You're so brave... the early parts of the video had so much poison ivy, I was starting to get itchy!😂
Thank you Leo and Heather. They matter❤❤❤
Such a wonderful job. I was as excited as you were when you panned the gravestones. I saw the yucca right away when and said "bingo!!" Much love from Iowa ❤❤❤
I love this one👏 You found it and what an accomplishment. You know them old mountains and you are definitely in your element. Heather is amazing at putting these videos together. I was raised in Virginia at little area known as Pine Mountain. You know one should never take the mountains for granted and one should never think they know it all when they go wondering around in them. The Mountains demand respect or they will swallow you whole⛰️
Fine job sir! They are all important. While I was watching in my mind I was hearing the old song Tramp on the Street. He was some mothers darling he was some mothers son...
Are you from Switzer, James?
@suzybailey-koubti8342 no I'm from southern Ohio with all of my roots in eastern kentucky
WOW. What a fabulous journey. Shame on the gas company.
Great work. This video is so wonderful to have preserved the memories of those buried.
I had thought desecrating/destroying a graveyard, was against the law.
Gas company should have been held accountable for destroying the graveyard.
Good program, Leo.
Thank you for being determined in finding the graveyard.
Great job again Leo !! i hope you pack a snack and water or a drink of some kind , But you know those Mountains. you been climbing all your life and riding the trails for years !! Hats off to you Leo from Iowa !
Great job Leo and Heather Thank you for all your time and effort bringing all of us these wonderful videos 💖👍🏻
Leo,hey, great ! You becareful now, Leo ! Leave up to you Leo and Heather you found it! Oh Yes that is Fantastic ! You both are wonderful people God bless At least now they can remember who was buried here! Janet Sarlo
Great job Leo, I'm sure they were thankful that you brought light and knowledge to their resting place.
Awesome job. The cemetery is now found 💙💙
My heart jumped when you found it. Love what you do and your channel. Please keep it up ❤
Finding things like this help us remember our history I love your videos
That graveyard needs to be looked at in the winter.
LEO, I SECOND JAYHARPER2252. COMMENT. WE NEED TO SEE MORE. THERE IS A LOT MORE UP THERE THAT NEEDS TO COME TO LIGHT.
Thank you Leo
Thanks, Leo. Valiant effort and perseverance paid off.
All the cemeteries, and burial sites that have been lost to time.
Some graves never marked, some with field stones, some just a makeskift wooden cross. God knows where they are and who they are.
Thanks for all the efforts, y'all put into these quests.
Y'all do a fantastic job on finding these sites.
I would hope that tge gas company didn't know what they did, and this was just an oversight. Either way, it's done. Y'all did at least find it.
God bless y'all and stay safe on your travels to these locations.
Thanks for this video. My mother's side of the family is from Greenup County KY. I've attended several funerals deep in the hollers. I have relatives that have lived on the Ohio side of the river and in KY. Last summer we went searching through several cemeteries, much like the one you discovered in search of relatives. We found several dating back to the mid 1800's based on genealogical references. I'm in my 60's and live in the Cincinnati area but many of my relatives continue to live in the Greenup and Ashland areas. Many fond memories of visiting relatives back in the hollers where they would keep their pot-bellied stoves stoked over the winter by simply going out their doors and gathering coal. Had a great uncle that drove a Model-A truck well into the 1970's. It's a shame you can't bottle those memories and pass them to new generations. Sincerely appreciate your effort to bring the past to "today". FYI, Worthington and Sparks were examples of the names we went in search of.
The gas company should pay reparations to any family that is living and fix the cemetery.
Great video & story.
I agree with your other followers that said these resting places need to be protected
Blessings to you and Heather.
Hi Leo and Heather. I never comment on posts.,but Leo you made my heart smile. Your dedication to keep going to find these lost graves, well like I said it made my heart smile ❤ Thank you for this so that all that are there, whether you found the markers or not, we all know where they are , Thanks to you ❤️🙏🙏🙏
You are awesome. Thank you for all the adventures. This is so sad
Another brilliant and successful Leo adventure!
Hello there you never give up usually fine what you’re looking for if you just try and try like you do I think you’re amazing you and Heather are such a sweet couple. I love the video. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless.
Thank you so much!!
Great job Leo and Heather. Leo I can't imagine anyone else that could of found this. You got skills guy.
Good job Leo- persistence pays off!
You sir are a braver man than I to make that climb this time of year. As thick as the vegetation is, I'm really surprised you were able to see any stones at all. It might be worth visiting again in the winter months to see if any more stones are visible.
Some heads should have rolled at that gas company for desecrating a cemetery like that. That was the most disrespectful thing anyone could have done.
Good for you Leo! I admire your determination!!
Be so careful out by yourself, walking in the deep woods. Beautiful country. I sure enjoy your videos and all the history. When big companies want they will take So sad
This was a very special video and I really enjoyed it. I loved how excited you were as you found more and more graves.
This is one of those cemeteries that would be awesome to come back to in the winter time when all the vegetation is gone!
Awesome job!!! Tell the gas company to fix their mess!
Just terrible, how was that even allowed? Outstanding work Leo!
Ooh Boy for a minute I was scared you got lost in the mountain😥.Take a stick next time for eventually meeting a snake😬. You know Leo I am very happy for all you do. I am proud of all you did for the lost & found. I don't comment much, but I watch all your post. God bless you always. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What a great video I just stumbled apon Thank you RIP C B Cemetery
I think It's really important to find these lost cemeteries. And this one has been found because of your hard work today. Can you report it to the state so they can put it on their maps? I guess there must be many lost cemeteries in the mountains. After everyone that remembers these folk die there is no one to remember where they are.
This episode really touched my heart it was a very horrible thing destroying this sacred place you all are really appreciated doing this my thoughts and prayers to the people and families of this cemetery 🙏😇
THIS IS ANOTHER CLASSIC MY MAN WE ARE GOING TO VISIT THIS PLACE NEXT YEAR WE LIVE IN YONKERS NY IT LOOKS AMAZING SO HISTORICAL
Thank you Leo you did a wonderful thing ❤️
Fantastic bless you Leo
Congratulations Leo
Awesome job Leo! How sad things like this happen too often
Thank you so much.
Nice video leo I'm proud ove you for trying so hard
Well done Leo fantastic to find those lost graves
Late watching this Leo, you are the GOAT!
Going to watch again!
GREAT JOB LEO!!! 🎉
Thank you for all your hard work!
How sad is that, that the gas company had no problem destroying that cemetery for their use. I hope they have nightmares
So sad! Thank you for your hard work!
Awesome video. Love your channel.
Bless your heart Leo! It’s hard work physically I know. That was a real stupid gas company and so unchristian for doing what they did. God will punish! You are so brave in what you do. You must not be allergic to poison ivy etc., I saw a lot of sassafras there on your video. Thank you also Heather for your talent🥰. Both of you are making and recording eternal lost history of the past✝️
Bless you!!!
God bless you Leo
Glad you found it 👏👏👏👏❤️❤
Leo, you are the man!!
