I’m sharing with you my experience going through the Air Force Officer Selection Board.
So like many of you when I started my process of becoming an officer. I started to study for the AFOQT, I watched as many TH-cam videos as possible and tried to get all the tips and advice that was out there.
After I passed the test, the next step for me was going through the officer selection board or interview. I started to talk to others who had recently went through it and tried to watch videos on TH-cam to learn better ways to get through it.
However, I noticed there wasn’t many videos about the actual interview. So after I went through mine and was selected, I wanted to create this video that may be able to help the next persons experience a little better.
First of all, I went through the process as already being enlisted so my experience may be slightly different then a ROTC cadet or someone applying from college.
On the day of the interview, I wore my blues and was provided the meeting location. I was briefed on how the process would go and I reported in to the room. On the board was a Major, Captain, and a First Lieutenant . I was seated in front of them and they each took turns asking me several questions.
I’ll be honest, some of the questions took me by surprise and was different then your “normal” interview questions that you may have experienced in the past.
    1. When have you been presented with an ethical dilemma and how or what did you do to handle it?
    2. What has been the biggest mistake in your career?
    3. What has been your greatest achievement in life?
And of course they had some typical interview questions such as
    1. Why should we select you for this position?
    2. What have you done to prepare yourself?
    3. What strengths and weaknesses do you have?
A lot of the questions were related to leadership experience or abilities so the interview questions may be different for a board who’s interviewing prior enlisted compared to those with no military experience.
So being able to relate your experience in school, work, sports, and life in general to a leadership trait is something to keep in mind.
It should go without saying that all this is focused on a leadership position for the Air Force
Here is the biggest thing I learned from it. They don’t want to hear simple yes or no answers. So they ask these open ended type of questions that make you use critical thinking skills and be able to explain and articulate yourself through them.
Everyone isn’t going to have the same answers, but what separates you from the others is the ability to showcase what experience, knowledge and skills you can bring to the Air Force.
The interview is extremely important because you have convinced multiple people who you have never met before that you are who the Air Force needs in a hour or less.
Everyone is coming into this interview with a degree and a passing AFOQT score so you have to be able to separate yourself from the others.
This is all achieved by being confident in yourself. Having that confidence is by practicing and asking yourself though questions. Having friends or coworkers ask interview style questions that may you think before just answering. Going in there with positive body language and knowing that you have done everything you could do to prepare for it.

Yep, you got this on the spot. Obviously by the time you have made it to the board its crunch time and a lot of people are not used to this style of interview. Prior enlisted members get the benefit of some knowledge of what to expect coming into the interview but the fact is the officers are not biased towards your dress uniform over the College student sitting before them. It is all how you carry yourself. Even how you walk into the room and sit down is all being graded. If I can give one piece of advise it would be to find someone to help you with a mock interview.. either a recruiter or even family members. Have them film you so you can look at the things that you're doing. Nervous ticks, or saying umm, or ahhh. Speak clearly, confidently, and if you don't have the answer to a question or fumble a question just simply say. Sir/Maam- I don't have that answer at this time but I will work to find that answer for future reference moving forward. idk just my two cents.

    Hey, Andrew -
    Thanks for the video, man.
I am prior service, who was honorably discharged as a SSgt back in 2019. I got out to pursue my MBA in finance and try to the civilian world. Now, I am four and a half months out from finishing my MBA and have decided I still want to serve.
I just passed my physical at MEPs, studying for the AFOQT for the second time and waiting for the board that is coming up this summer. Originally, I took the AFOQT and met minimums while I was AD; however, I did not study and just took it blindly. Now, I am seeking to do well enough to become a pilot or RPA pilot for fiscal year '21. Working with recruiter right now.
Anyway, I bought the Barron book, "Military Flight Aptitude Test." Any other advice on books, or websites to follow while studying? I plan on taking the AFOQT at the end of January and then TBAS following that with my flight log book.
    Thank and Happy New Year,
    Christopher "Larry" Madaris

I haven’t heard of a requirement to otherwise meet a board for active duty-off the street. Maybe have to meet with an ALO to go to USAFA or for an ROTC scholarship, or see a recruiter to put together a packet for OTS.
