I like how you corrected her and said that my foreign language speaking friends didn't teach me, I did, and I practiced it with them. It was an eye opener to me to fully take responsibility to learning languages I want to learn. And that includes studying on my own in private and not relying on talking to others to other in public to be how I learn a language

Gotta love that Cantonese Combo Breaker (patent pending lol). For anyone who wonders why it's such a big deal, Cantonese is a regional language that's not really "mainstream" like Mandarin. Less than 5% of China's 1.4B population consider Cantonese their mother tongue. As someone learning Hindi (widely spoken), this is like me surprising someone with Bengali (regional). It's like a magic trick.

It's more mainstream than Mandarin in the 80s and 90s. The reason why it's a big deal when someone speaks Cantonese is that it is HARD. It's an ancient language that maintained its original sauce. On the other hand, mandarin has changed over the centuries.

When each of us use Google translate, it's not a program we're using. This man is sitting at the terminal at the other end translating our words in real time.
My family is also from Cassino. (Relating to the first woman who he spoke with.) I can only speak English and Italian. From watching his videos for so long I haven't seen much in terms of speaking Italian. It explains a lot to me now. It makes me feel like "conversational" is possible in many languages if spoken this way. The speaking is slow, simple, and not always grammatically correct/natural but the meaning is obvious. And I guess that's the key really... to be able to get your point across without fearing errors or perfection. It makes me feel much more impassioned to begin learning an Asian language. I have to learn to be fearless! 🐺

Make plans to visit an Asian country you want to visit within a year or two, then go on the Duolingo app to learn some basic words, after about 6 months get a tutor on italki.com, it's really cheap for some languages, then practice the language with the locals when you visit that country. I'm doing that right now for spanish and vietnamese. Good luck!

I lived in Italy for 3 years and he speaks Italian better than I ever did lol. My biggest regret is not caring to learn the language much while I was there. I learned just enough to get by. I was there during 7th, 8th, and 9th grade during the early 90’s. As an adult I love everything Italian and want to speak Italian fluently. I would be happy to live in Italy for the rest of my life!

I suspect that somali brother's native language is Chimini, a language that's similar to swahili which is spoken in coastal areas of somalia and kenya or Garre which is similar to Borana/Oromo language.
That's why he was saying my language is different from the one am using now and he kept on using the phrase "Kama" which is swahili usually kenyan somalis and barawe community uses it alot when speaking somali

I speak Cantonese and I find your Pronunciation in Cantonese is really good. Really difficult to catch up the tone you got it right tho
I’ve always wanted to know from a native speaker how good his chinese actually SOUNDS to a native. Thanks for your insight. He was truly inspirational.
The Man himself was right: his Cantonese pronunciation is a bit better than that of his Mandarin. I would say he's about 80-90% there. If he had hitched up his thinking pauses, he could have passed for a very good foreign learner. As it was though, it was apparent that he hadn't lived in the land or been immersed daily in the language before.
In any case, I'm sure I and many other Canto speakers greatly appreciated his effort and determination in learning such a niche language and to give it his #1 fav spot. Rest In Power to a true King.
