I have a harlequin. Its about 5-6 inches at this point. It hasn't really bothered any of the smaller fish in the tank. I have 4 damsels, 2 clowns, and a flame hawk with him, along with other bigger fish like angels, tangs, and puffers. He keeps to himself mostly, but he does like to swim across the entire length of the tank. It's a 210g, and I would say even that is a bit too small for him.
My experience with Harlequins are quite different. I had an Indonesian specimen and it was actually quite Timid and tended to like hiding in the little "cave" in the rock formation. It never bullied any of my fish, in fact for the first few weeks, it was bullied by my Niger Trigger. After those weeks it was fine in my tank, it ate like a champ and was the like of the tank until it passed away from Marine Velvet.
Same experience with my Oscar Cichlid. I seriously underestimated what "semi aggressive" meant. Before I knew it all the small fish in my tank was snacked on one by one -- and at night -- so I almost never noticed the fish missing until I returned from work. He even harassed some my bigger fishes as well. BUT, he was a good looking specimen and got quite playful when I got close to the tank, so I tolerated him.
I have one in my FOWLR. Mind you he plays second to my clown trigger. My tusk swims and has made a cave. He burst out on feeding time, takes a clam back to him home and then swims laps. I don't have corals as I have a other triggers and puffers but have had the tusk for over a year and so far so good. I do have a lid on my tank as I have lost one in the past as it jumped out.
I had one in one of my tanks and it didn’t bother the other fish and went about it’s daily swimming business. I did also feed my fish those little colored clams that you can collect by the THOUSANDS ( free fish food)at the beach. MOST of the fish ate them and were VERY HAPPY when I’d dump a handful of them in my tanks. The shells will build up on the bottom but you can use a Long handle net to remove them. Also, if you DO want to start feeding those Clams to your fish Dry Freeze them in Zip Lock Bags, that last a Looooong Time frozen that way. Before feeding thaw a handful of them in a bowl with saltwater, they open up and it easier for the fish to get the meat out. My TriggerFish and BIG Wrasses had No Trouble breaking open any of the unopened shells if they had to.
Was the fish feed properly? Mine hasn’t touched another fish or the cleaner shrimp? I also have a snowflake eel that hasn’t gone hunting down any inverts because I feed him properly.
Ive had 2, both Biota. The first was an angel, shy and timid. Had it 6mo but It didnt survive a tank transfer, despite their bullish nature they are still wrasses and can be sensitive to changes. The 2nd was a complete terror until my tangs and angels got bigger. All fish are personality driven, but based on mine they can have a wide range.
Yes regardless of the fish you have a stunning reef tank, just wish my angels wouldn’t eat coral so I could go back to a reef, great job on the channel too
Interesting. Just got a new harlequin tusk today. My tank is a predator setup with 45cm eppaulette, 30cm snowflake, adult scopas tang, adult rabbit fish, adult sgt maj damsel, juvenile spotted box fish, file fish and a sailfin tang. The sgt maj damsel is the alpha of the tank. Will be interesting to see if the new tusk takes him on for alpha status, the tusk is easily twice his size, but so is the scopas and rabbitfish. Really happy with his health and vibrance, he is a good example of aussie harly tusk.
I have one in a 75g mixed reef. Heavy on rock work. 40% of tank. Yes he is the Alpha. My tomini Tang holds his own. The Tusk does not chase anyone, but does keep the tang in check when req. I also have 2 lyertails ( 3" long) ( the male has an attitude all the time) and 2 springer damsels.( 1" long) ( never bothers them) Snails are hit or miss. Turbos hold their own. A couple blue legs still their. My Tusk is 6"s long. I feed him 3mm pellets. He will eat any food item. My filtration will handle him for life including other fish and corals. Now I have found him swimming against a power head flow. For me a great fish. Con: No blue legs for cleanup. His personality is: Just don't harass me and all is cool. Note: I have had a red dotty back with a real mean streak, which would make my tusk look like a powder puff fish. Just saying. And Yeah you are right different fish/different personality's. ( no coral damages at all) LPS dominant, some softies and a couple SPS. NOTE: If you feed a predator live food like (small fish and shrimp) they will be a mean fish. Reference : Clown Trigger-had several ( will eat pellets and shrimp chunks) Better Fit for a fowlr IMO.
Old video, so sorry to ask questions. Do you think these would do fine in 6' predator tank with some mean sob's like 2 smaller groupers(blue lined and polleni), a lunar wrasse, a sergeant major damsel, and a picasso trigger.
I think yes actually - apparently they're quite timid in a setup like that and will hide in the rocks a lot. So as long as there are places for him to hide and feel comfortable, I'd say it'd be OK. Although I haven't kept the fish you're talking about so worth asking around a bit more...
I have a despot of a queen angel. She is mean and I thought long and hard before introducing another angel. I finally introduced an Imperator and it immediately cowed the queen and everything has been fairly peaceful. Still, the harlequin interests me. I have a fairly aggressive bunch of fishh so it may be worth a try if I can get an Aussie fish. I agree, the Aussie are better colored than the Indian variety.
Thanks for this video. Please do a video on your Foxface. Beautiful fish and I can't seem to decide if I should get one considering its poisonous dorsal fins, but also that they pick on wounded coral
Personally, I wouldn't worry about the spines. The chances of you getting stung are so small it's not worth thinking about. But they are a risk with corals for sure, especially when they get older. I think the answer is to get one (they're AWESOME at eating algae) and buy a fish trap. Then you can catch it if it goes rogue - mine is always the first fish in the trap when I put it in so he'd be easy to catch!
I have one in a 800 gallon fowlr tank and he is the one getting picked on by the honeycomb eel and miniatus grouper also he is a huge wuss he even gets scared when I put my hand in the tank
Sorry, not on the current topic. But, I was interested in getting a flame hawk fish in my reef. I hear good and bad about them, but you have been quite positive about these fish in your past videos. Could you provide more information about your experience. Love the videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I absolutely love my two. Model citizens (as was the last flame I had), entertaining, great colour and look awesome. I've been thinking about adding a 2nd flame recently. They're among my favourite fish, especially the flame. Supposedly the falco hawk is the least aggressive hawk - could be worth dipping your toe in with one of them. Ultimately some people have problems with shrimp and i'd say sexy shrimp will get eaten. But I value character in a reef tank so I'm prepared to take the risk.
I’ve been watching how you get on with this fish as I want to move mine to from a tank without snails, crabs or shrimp to my main reef tank which has standard cuc so it looks like it’s a “no” In his 6’ tank with equally large fish, except for a scarlet hawkish and brown barred goby he is a model citizen though. I’ve never seen any big poops either but maybe the chevron tang, a member of the bristletooth group and thus a detritivore, probably eats it 🤢 It’s a shame yours didn’t fit in as they’re so beautiful.
Fish only, no inverts. Never had an aggressive tusk in my life. Also they tend to be babies rather than bullies. First time I’ve actually ever seen anyone say they are aggressive since I’ve kept so many in clients tanks and always just swim away from everything. Not sure about them being first introduced but I’ve never had a single fish die from one.
Do you think I’d get away with one as my tank is a dwarf lion pride, mixed reef so I’m already limited to not having small fish and certain CUC? Always loved them but this is the first time I’ve ever had what I feel is a brilliant opportunity for one
Hi loving the videos I’m fairly new to this but I’m really enjoying it. Can I ask you a question please? Where did you get your fish trap from please? Thanks Dean
Harlequin tuskfish do not occur in Indonesia in any significant quantity and Fishbase does not even list Indonesia in the native range for the species. (www.fishbase.us/summary/SpeciesSummary.php?ID=12722&AT=Harlequin+tuskfish) While some sellers will claim their fish are imported from Indo, those fish are almost certainly coming from the Philippines. While tuskfish from the Philippines historically have had a reputation for poor survival and lackluster appearance compared to their Australian counterparts, this almost certainly has to do with differences in handling processes for the fish in the two countries. The species is only found on the east side of the Philippines, 15 to 20 hours away from the exporters in Manila and in the past this has presented logistical challenges in a country with still very much developing infrastructure. However newly implemented changes in logistics of getting the fish to Manila coupled with training in oversight and collection and handling practices for the fishermen are already resulting in noticeable differences in the fish from certain exporters in the Philippines. Aquarists should no longer be so quick to write off specimens from the Philippines and going forward many will be quite impressed with the quality, even compare to Australian fish.
Ive got 6 6+ inch fish in a 90 gal and the harlequin is one of them he’s a model citizen never touched a hermit crab or snail and shares tank with 2 cleaner shrimp and even fire fish tons of small fish

Mate. It was an effing nightmare! I removed the entire sock unit... mainly with a hammer in the end 😬 it's worth it in the end though - good bit of kit
I have a Indonesian harlequin Tusk, it's the boss, but it's modellic citizen , no aggressive with fish inclusive little damsels. Ofc I don't have hermits, crabs or shrimps. It's spectacular!, eat everything, nori, pellets, some portions of fresh fish, mussels, etc.
My experience with a full-sized Harlequin Tusk in a 180 gallon Plexiglass tank. It was one of the last fish I introduced and it did not kill any of my other fish (Greenbird Wrasse, such a great fish, Red Hawk now there's an asshole fish, sucked the eyeball right off another fish, etc). Here's the part you will want to know about.... that MF Tusk *scratched* the fuck out of my tank, out of spite I expect. They are just smart animals and like birds, IMO they understand their captivity. So yeah, I sold that fucker and wet sanded my tank after....
That fish is hit or miss as far as attitude and what he eats it’s a gamble 😀 my harlequin tusk lives in my predator aquarium and he would not be suitable for a reef aquarium. Mine eats all shrimp and crabs except small hermits he cannot grab and pull out of there shell, mine is not the boss in the tank my grouper runs that aquarium. He is a beast for sure and will eat any fish smaller than him that was not in there before he was. Good luck anyone who wants to take the gamble 😀
hope you see this message i have a tank thats 6500 gallons. its pretty big and i have a few large angelfish(emperor, blue face, etc) and lots of tangs(yellow, blue, purple, etc) and many clown fishes. some of them are small so if i have a harlequin, will it be a prob ? or is there other options❤
6500 gallons? Is that right? I couldn't tell you how that sort of space impacts fish behaviour to be honest. But I'd expect Clownfish to be fine with the tusk. Gobies more of a risk.
Well after costing me a bit in snail, fish and corals I'm pretty sure these boys are better off in a all fish tank(I been reef keeping about 19 years now) ..... My tusk did awesome in my 180 Gallon all fish(triggers, tangs, other large wrasse, grouper) not so much fun in my 100 gallon reef ..... Not sure if this helps anyone but that's my experiences with the spieces ...... Awesome fish just be careful with it's tank mates ......
don’t seem to matter what kinda fish or invert ..mine will attack even tangs and fish similar size it will bother .. maybe a predator tank would be ok for it .. idk what to do with .. I was hoping it would of been a lil less aggressive lol
So you buy a fish you shouldn't have, you should do some research before purchasing. The tank is overstocked and the Foxface needs a larger tank as well as the tusk. The tusk should be kept to a Fowlr
I had a tusk fish in my Red Sea reefer 650, he was really nice didn’t bother anything, then 1 day decided all 6 green chromis were a snack over a weekend, I also pulled him out the tank before my clowns were lunch. I’d say never keep a harlequin with anything smaller than a tang
I’ve had two of these and I think you’ve given the Tuskfish a bad rap and was not the fish’s fault. Your tank is too small and shouldn’t add small fish after a Tuskfish is in your tank. Better to ask on forums describing your tank and inhabitants before making a purchase.
I te.d to think one might be alerted to the agressive nature of the tusk by it's GIANT BLUE FANGS protruding from it's mouth....I keep mine in a display tank with nothing but triggers and aggressive eels
Why didn’t you immediate remove him after he started messing with the wrasse? Seems unnecessary and cruel to let him kill the wrasse, crabs and shrimp.
I agree with you but a harlequin especially an Australian is just too beautiful not to get one,you need a huge tank 125 would be the minimum hes going to outgrow it,great fish if you want to keep an aggressive fish only tank I know it's crazy but I'd rather have a harlequin over any big money tang or angel there what got me into saltwater and I cant wait till I have saltwater tank big enough were I know only aggressive saltwater fish will be in it no coral no inverts, nothing I cant keep with my harlequin:)
Not sure if you've also seen 13 Months with The Australian Harlequin Tusk by Mr. Saltwater Tank TV: th-cam.com/video/p6fZIGy4XS0/w-d-xo.html For me it's research and plan for the worst, hope for the best if you are desparate for a particular fish.
Nice tank but that tusk was your coolest looking fish. It is their personality too that is attractive. Alphas. Anyway sorry you had to get rid of it. I think you just overreacted because he does what predators do. That’s my dream fish still after 25 yrs in the hobby. Perfect size too.
He`s pissed because of the wallpaper. Good review.

That's more or less what I was expecting based on my research before I bought it 😬
Great review and amazing tank! The fact you called him a douchebag really made me laugh
🤣
''thought my cat took a dump in my tank'' lmfaoooo that got me laughing out loud for reals.
I have a 2ft nano and just want to say thank you! I've been absorbing your videos since I've found your channel. Thanks again.

What other fishes do you have, living in with your HT?
I have a FOWLR too .. my HT is beating up my big red corris wrasse..
Love your wallpaper!
Good God, I had one for 3 years before moving countries 3 decades ago. It was the sweetest and funniest fish in my tank!
"Prison Rules" Absolutely Hilarious
Thanks for the info. & the laughs ! ! !
Lovely tank Alex!
Keep up the good posts!
Lighting would be cool and flow!! 👍
You are spot on! I have an 8 foot tank and my 7 inch HT beats the life out of 10 inch Yellow tail corris wrasse ....
Ok, scratch that idea lol.
I have a fire/flame tusk, he's peaceful and calm, just not going to risk anything small or any inverts with how he goes after feeder shrimp
I really appreciate your channel
General none of the fish smaller than three inch except dottybacks can live with this guy with no risk !

I had one and was the best stunning fish I owned, I hope you rehoused him to big tank, looks like he’s got the ickers tho :(
Good realistic video. They’re really more suited to a large fowlr setup; I’d never put one in a reef. ...for these reasons. 😈
Was the fish feed properly? Mine hasn’t touched another fish or the cleaner shrimp? I also have a snowflake eel that hasn’t gone hunting down any inverts because I feed him properly.

I had one that ate like six damsels, they’re vicious with anything they can eat. I’ve never seen them go after big fish though
Yes regardless of the fish you have a stunning reef tank, just wish my angels wouldn’t eat coral so I could go back to a reef, great job on the channel too
I have one and so far he is an angel. I will keep your info in mind in case one day his demeanor changes. Thanks for sharing!
I also have a flame angel and a pearl side butterfly fish so I think my days of coral are over 😂,
Interesting. Just got a new harlequin tusk today. Thanks for the video mate, as you know I’d been thinking about one but this video has helped a lot 👍
Old video, so sorry to ask questions. Do you think these would do fine in 6' predator tank with some mean sob's like 2 smaller groupers(blue lined and polleni), a lunar wrasse, a sergeant major damsel, and a picasso trigger.

Lovely fish! Hope it goes well 🙂
Thanks for this video.
I clicked on this because I've never heard of any type of tuckfish, let alone a Harlequin.

If the tank is 6 foot plus and you have no gobies or similar it's worth a shot I'd say. Very cool fish...
Thank you for the information
Fish are amazing!
Hi loving the videos I’m fairly new to this but I’m really enjoying it. Can I ask you a question please? Where did you get your fish trap from please? Thanks Dean
I borrowed it from my lfs but it's available online - it's made by Aqua Medic 🙂
Reef Dork thank you for your reply. I have found it. Thanks for the videos really easy to follow and make a lot of sense
Thank you . I almost bought one yesterday. After hearing this . Ok il pass him

Not as far as I'm aware but I wouldn't be able to tell you confidently

I got tangs , 2 puffers , snow flake ell, long nose rabbitt fish , just fish only tank think will be ok?
I reckon so - it's the small tube shaped fish like gobies I'd be worried about
@@ReefDork Thx you

@@ReefDork Thanks.
Good honest vid, they like all tusks are mean fish. Maybe a predator only large display is the only option.
Haven't had the same experience yet, have only had him for 8 months, he did kill my cleaner shrimp the first day.
So you buy a fish you shouldn't have, you should do some research before purchasing. The tank is overstocked and the Foxface needs a larger tank as well as the tusk. The tusk should be kept to a Fowlr
If that happened to be my fish I would have cooked it for dinner.. 😆
Yes. Filled, batter dipped and deep fried. Let him see who is master of the tank.
I also have one with about the same results..
Love this video
Thinking about keeping one with a banded cat shark, anyone had experience with this
I miss my radiant wrasse
I had a tusk fish in my Red Sea reefer 650, he was really nice didn’t bother anything, then 1 day decided all 6 green chromis were a snack over a weekend, I also pulled him out the tank before my clowns were lunch. I’d say never keep a harlequin with anything smaller than a tang
Ouch 😕
Have you thought of time out?
As in put him in the sump for a week? No, I don't think it's a territory thing - he's just a beast 💪
I've got an Harlequin Tusk fish
I’ve had two of these and I think you’ve given the Tuskfish a bad rap and was not the fish’s fault. Your tank is too small and shouldn’t add small fish after a Tuskfish is in your tank. Better to ask on forums describing your tank and inhabitants before making a purchase.
Sometimes we do all the research in the world, recognise we probably shouldn't buy it... but do so anyway! 🤦♂️🤷♂️
I'm bought to get one tomorrow lol
His his heavy muscular jaw is a dead give away he was gonna be trouble ! The jaw was design to cruiser charger on crustaceans too !
I te.d to think one might be alerted to the agressive nature of the tusk by it's GIANT BLUE FANGS protruding from it's mouth....I keep mine in a display tank with nothing but triggers and aggressive eels
🧛♂️
Awesome fish requires the right environment though
I hope my yellow glofish sunny doesn’t die 😢
The Fish is currupt with hunger.
i wouldve rearched my hand in there the second he messed with the wrasse i have no tolerance for aggression in my reef
😀
Do you have any other fish with those teeth?
The only other thing in my house with teeth like that is my wife 😁
Damn...i jist bought this fish at a crazy cheap price..20 bucks...but lord have mercy...scared for my tank now
What a brute 😬
Who adds a Jawfish last 🙄😂
Why didn’t you immediate remove him after he started messing with the wrasse?
My tusk gets battered by a big iridis wrasse 😂
😅
Normally there not aggressive
My cat actually pooped in my tank before, So gross.
🤢🤮
Gnarly is the Tuskfish! I will stay away...
Yep, it wasn't his fault it was mine 🙂
After watching finding Nemo I stopped buying ocean fish
He needs to be sent to the Gulag.
Uhm...an OG👀💀....and so pretty....too bad....
Prison rules lol
Luv them but its a no no
Darn, I went full stupid like you lol!
They need to stay in the Ocean.
