Agreed, we're curious too! It was actually going to be sold at auction in 2018 with the bidding starting at €90,000, but then the offer was withdrawn and the castle was returned to Irish ownership. It certainly would make one heck of a home!
So I wonder if it's the same McDermott in Canada, Andrew McDermott came to Manitoba and opened an independent trading post and began his life in Canada a street in wpg is named after him I believe , and I am a descendent of his, I believe It was his daughter that married a Truthwaite man which is the family I'm from! Cool video I'd love to actually visit some day, Beautiful country!
My Grandfather John McDermott received some or all I don't know of the proceeds from the sale of The McDermott Castle in 1969. Lore has it that it was the equivalent of 50k in 1970...he proceeded to drink his windfall away to his death in 1973. No sharing with the family. Thanks Grandpa but bless your soul somehow...🙏
I’m not sure if you’ve done a video on it but I think Kylemore Abbey is something you need to check out if you’re interested. I know it’s not technically a castle but it is very cool!
Agreed! We visited Kylemore Abbey several years ago, but we haven't had a chance to film it yet. We'll definitely add it to the list! Thanks for the recommendation!
Great question! I believe Kilbrittain castle in county Cork is considered the oldest in Ireland. It was built in 1035 AD, though there are many stone forts that date back much earlier. As far the most impressive Irish castle? That's a tough one! 😊 Perhaps Dunluce castle in county Antrim. We haven't had a chance to film it yet, but it sits on a rocky outcropping towering above the ocean and is only accessible via a bridge connecting it with the mainland. The castle has a massive cave underneath it where boats might have landed in days past. 😃
Castles of Ireland oh and one more question! What is your opinion on renovating castles? Do you think they should be restored to their former glory or left as they are? I know in Italy some castles are renovated to provide as tourist attractions...
Another great question! People fall on both sides of this debate, but we are personally bigger fans of castles that are left as ruins. They just have more of a mystical feel in our opinion and seem to be funner to explore! You never know where a hidden passage might lead! That being said, we have also seen some amazing restored castles and understand that money from tourists helps the local community. 😃
I'm from Canada a relative of the McDermott from Ireland, from the Truthwaite family. I would love to help but won't likely make it before age catches up with me as well, I'm 56 grandson of Henry Truthwaite, I remember attending a family reunion and saw the family tree so interesting to see where my family came from.
Fire, catapults from boats during a siege in medieval times, was destroyed and rebuilt a few times. Originally destroyed in late 1100s; final additions 19th century, was burned in WW2
We're not sure what the official stance is on that sort of thing, but it seems like you can visit the island by boat. From what we've read the castle isn't structurally sound, so it might be dangerous to explore. The island certainly would make for an awesome camping spot though! 😊

My ancestors are from Roscommon, 61per cent Irish according to DNA! Marcia from Iowa USA
Amazing footage..!!
Wow!! It looks like the castle is very intact! I can't help but wonder how they built it on that little island!!

Would love to live there.
Me too! 😊

Hello! In your opinion what is the most impressive Irish castle? Also which is the oldest do you know? Great video!

What was history. Fire that took out roof? Floor plans of it finished? I see only walls.

UK law: remove roof and you don't have to pay property taxes - that is why so many of these old places are roofless.
can you camp or visit the island?
