I can't believe it's been almost 20 years since Sarah Hughes won the gold. I still remember that competition so vividly. Sarah totally brought the house down. It was memorable. 🎆
Viewing Sarah's program without commentary it's more lovely to watch! I especially like how she gets so much height in her combinations: 3:14:45 - the Triple Salchow and Triple Loop - height was huge! The second T/T at 3:15:35 (Triple Toe Loop/Triple Loop) was great too! She gets right up into the rotation! Well deserved Gold Medal!
In today's system, her jumps would have been downgraded. But it is true that her combos are huge! I think if she rotates faster she can even do a quad.
@@figulapt3784 Well, I realize that some of Sarah's jumps were a bit pre-rotated, but certainly not all of them. All of the skaters had flaws and even with them, Sarah was the clear winner that night on both technical side and the artistic.
Sarah Hughes really had the skate of her life here. Never before and never again did she skate with this much speed and attack, two triple triples aside. No one had a performance even close to hers this night.
@@auntiechercher4266 It was a fluke because she never produced another performance like that before and after SLC. She deserved to win the LP for sure. The SP should've been at least 5th or lower though; It was slow and the fluz and flip were highly questionable.
@@3l3llala13Wrong, Sarah was no fluke. Prior to this, Sarah was a consistently up and comer and a contender on her own merits for the previous two or three seasons. She had a injury the following year and then chose to focus on her schooling. The fact that she peaked here doesn't make her any fluke. If you want to talk about questionable technique - all the skaters had that in some form, to some degree on different elements. (And that includes Michelle, Irina and Sasha). So shove it.
@@3l3llala13And another thing, no one in figure skating produces the same performance every time. The elite skaters all have a time when they peak the most or have their downturn and neither of these makes someone a fluke or a has been. Sarah was junior national champion and finished at the Worlds in the top 10 every time she competed. She medaled at the Nationals every time she went except for her first try. That doesn't seem like a fluke to me. Just because she skated well in the LP here in 2002 and the other top ones didn't does not make her a fluke. Cheers to Sarah Hughes . . . a well deserved Gold Medalist that year!
My goodness, so many haters. I ❤️ Sarah's skate. The most difficult program. First woman to do 2 triple/triple combinations. Love it. The music, her joy, and her artistry. I watch it all the time.
@@rajs7876 Tara didn't really make a correct 3+3.......That's why so many people thought Michelle was robbed at 1998 Olympics. Point, Michelle didn't fall at 1998 Olympics.
I wondered why Sasha didn't place higher than Michelle, but this view shows that not only did she fall but she two-footed her Triple Lutz and Triple Flip. You can see it in slow motion: 3:31:17 - 3:31:18 and 3:31:43. I think both jumps were double footed. On the Triple Flip - there is an even closer replay view where you can see it: 3:31:55 - 3:31:56.
It's not about the 2-footed jumps -- 2 footed slightly or not, Cohen's program was superior in all ways to Kwan's with more passion, and spark and position. And she WENT for the triple/triple. Kwan got a Olympic bronze medal over Cohen based on rep alone. Cause that program of Kwan's here was NOT serving it.
@@BrentWolgamott Sasha should've been on the podium. I personally would've put her a close 2nd behind Michelle after the short program, yes she fell here and had some mistakes with the 2 foots, but Irina's program was quite sloppy and her landings were wonky, just like how she was in Turin 2006
@@glibarios It wouldn't have mattered if she landed it -- the judges weren't going to give it to her with a fall on the flip, after the uproar of what happened over Sale/Pelltier and B/Z. It just wouldnt have mattered.
Ok - 3:49:33 is the funniest shot up t I ve have ever seen in a figure skating comp. The look on Irina's face when she looks at the big screen and sees Sarah Hughes's backstage
I know she stepped out of the first, but Julia Sebastyen has a gorgeous lutz technique! Perfect outside edge and and great height - didn't appreciate this until the rewatch.
@TurboCMinusMinus Considering how intricate the new scoring system has become, with all the bullets and features to be taken into account while rewarding the GOE, I think that the best solution would be to split the judging panel in two - one for TES and one for PCS. Also, It would be nice if PCS would be differentiated, instead of giving a skater all 9es based solely on their reputation or because they are a 9 in one department but lacks in other (example: Liza Tuk should be getting high 8 for performance and interpretation, but 6 for transitions). Regarding quads, I think that the ISU will take a decision only after Beijing 2002, since it's still a new thing in ladies. But I agree it should be limited. In men, it started with just one quad per programme (Toeloop or Salchow), then it slowly progressed in the years. In 2002, 2006 and 2010 Olympics not many top athletes were doing a quad - there was even a debate going on whether quads were important or not when both Buttle and Lysacek won their World titles without one. The all 'quads fever' started in 2015-16, with Boyang doing 4 Lutz and Uno doing 4 Flip, then next season Chen came along. But in ladies they are already doing multiple quads per programme, and with wrong technique, too. So far, the only legitimate ones are Trusova's and Kamila's 4 Toeloop.
03:08:25 this is indefinitely, the best Olympics performance ever by Sarah Hughes, the stadium erupt. 03:51:56 I love how she react, at long last she did it Sarah Hughes, the Olympic champions at her home country what a total upset. 🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇

I rarely have my emotions brought out with such excitement, thanks to all the people in the sport and those supporting them. To you Who do the necessary work to bring us into the rink from our homes, Thank you for the work you do, and to the long list of others that makes such a difference. I give thanks and thought your away.
The description box says Sarah Hughes was in fourth place after the short program due to under rotations on her flip and Lutz. However, this was judged with the 6.0 system when 'under rotation' wasn't looked at or discussed... For example, Kwan (who is my all time favorite) badly under rotated her flip in the short but wasn't penalized for it. Sarah came into the games as the 3rd ranked American behind Kwan and Cohen. I feel as if that was the main reason she was 4th after the short program.
It funny how the partiality of judges were talked about all the time in ice dancing, and brought to light in pairs, but it was almost as bad in singles. It was clear that the judges were waiting to hand the gold to Kwan in 2002 as long as she stayed on her feet. Kwan only had herself to blame this particular Olympic season. 1998? Eh, I think Lipinski deserved it in spite of the flutzing, but at least there are arguments for both skaters. One more important note to make. Michelle did what she HAD to do to almost perfection, she had to do her 3L+2T, she had to put in a triple-triple in 2002, but it was the eaierst one of the group, of course, and I could go on, but that was also her Achilles heel. If she was perfect in doing the minimum, she would most often win due to her artistry, of course that component could be argued too--I think her LP's were mostly variations on a theme--but if she was off technically like this night, her artistry might not be enough of someone else out duels her technically. It happened in both Olympics. Michelle made the conscious choice not to expand her jumps technically, and in the end, she paid for it in the two most important moments in her career.
This is incorrect, both Sarah and Michelle were penalized for their cheated jumps in the short program but several (though not all) of the judges. It's pretty apparent in their technical scores.
@@dc19921000 But Sarah wasn't penalized for her chested jumps in the free program? I'm telling you, I've been a part of the skating community for many years and we never discussed URs until the current judging system.
@@FigureNastics Sarah landed two 3-3s in the long program and had 7 triples, but didn't get a single 5.9 for technical merit. She instead got 5.7s and 5.8s, which is what she should be getting under a reasonable judging system and panel. In contrast, Irina landed fewer triples and had several sloppy elements, yet managed to get up to 5.9 for technical merit. I also have been in the skating community for many years. While people didn't discuss URs on a regular basis during 6.0, it was very apparent that skaters who regularly under- or pre-rotated jumps were frequently penalized.
@@dc19921000 I feel as if Sarah didn't get 5.9s bc she skated early in the last group and was still building her reputation. I honestly don't remember anyone saying anything about her URs. Maybe that was just at my rink. What was your experience with URs during the 6.0 system?
The moment Sasha Cohen stepped into global competition, everything changed in choreography and presentation in figure skating. 22 years after, amazing athlete!!!!
Same here. Mildly traumatic, as she was the one I’d been cheering on for years. Looking back now, I can just feel ecstatic for Sarah. She skated so well. And Michelle is remembered more than any of the others - her legacy is secure.
@@liveoakgap7489 yeah but unfortunately no one remembers Sarah Hughes. The world and the US will always remember Michelle Kwan who really is a better figure skater, in the top 10 of greatest figure skaters of all time, and has a legacy in this sport. Sorry but some talent outlasts the Olympics.
The Russian judge put Sarah in 10th in the short....lots of partisan judging in this one. I will always love Irina's huge powerful jumps, but this was Sarah's night.
It was probably the best Olympic performance I’ve ever seen. The third place American on a three woman team....and she takes it all. And deservedly so. It was magic
This is what cost Michelle Kwan the gold medal here: (1.) two footed her first triple toe in the combination at 3:39:34. (2.) Then she was angled in the air on the landing for the Triple Flip and took a fall: 3:40:04.
But she was also slow, scared, and unhappy. When things are unfolding for the judges in real time, it’s not quite the same as when everyone analyzes it on TH-cam for the next 20 years.
No coach and she had trouble with the flip in the short ( but landed) then trouble again in the long. And she needed Lori Nicola back. And no triple triple. Sarah had two though I believe one or both was under rotated.
It doesn’t matter. There is a number of great skaters Sasha, Michelle, Nancy, Irina, Mao, Evgenia, who never won OG, but they are great, the ones who moved this sport and changed it!
@Elisabeth * well Alina's lutz isn't any better than Evgenia's also she uses full blade asist. But she won gold medal, it is not just about the jumps it is about the overall quality of skating. They both deserve their medals.
Between Sasha's flutz and nerves, and Michelle skating sloooow and spinning slooow, I'm not surprised. I'm shocked how slow Michelle skates. It's been ages since I watched her programs, and it really stood out. I love both skaters. Love their programs, but not surprised.
That was a nice moment between Kwan and Slutskaya. Poor Sarah looked a bit awkward 4:12:03. She had that look what do I do here😳👀. They all skated well but Sarah definitely won that free skate!
Irina was obviously trying to ignore Sarah. She wanted Michelle to be in the middle when it should always be the gold medalist who should be in the middle. She’s not friends with Michelle but she made it into like high school bullying let’s not talk to her moment.
I find it amazing the gold was won with 5.7/5.8s, on both marks. Who did the judges think would catch Hughes on the technical marks? Artistic impression, 5.7/5.8 was right.
@@kev7978 That's not quite how it works. The ordinals are shifted into points for each program. Short program = 1st place, .5 points, 2nd, 1.0, 3rd, 1.5 etc. Long program points double that = 1st place, 1.0, 2nd place 2.0, etc. Sarah earned 3 points (2.0 + 1.0), Irina 3 points (1.0 + 2.0), Michelle 3.5 points (.5 + 3.0) When Michelle was scored, she was in second so far which would have been enough to win. But Irina beat her, making her point total different after they had all skated.
The judging panel did not call under rotations this system. However, I would argue that almost all of Sarah's triples where under-rotated. Especially the 3/3 combos...

Her Tosca at the 94 Nationals was my favorite program of Michelle's....I thiink she received all 6.0s except for 2 5.9s for artistic impression. Technical scores were very high as well.
You must not have watched the same competition MK's program is as stiff as her soulless without fluidity without transition and it is far from being the program of her life as her technique is lackluster or amplitude of very small jumps without scale. .As for her clichéd musical choice, it is in perfect bad taste, it is so boringly boring ... But all tastes are in nature .. But it is the kind of "grandiose" music that crushes the skater when she skates hard. mediocre way .. SC was much better artistically than MK and deserved the 3rd place
Honestly, I think her 97/98 Olympic Long Program Lyra Angelica was her most remarkable and best program of her career. This program was a wrong choice in my opinion because she normally skates to music nobody skates to such as Lyra Angelica, East of Eden, Red Violin, Taj Mahal, Dream of Desdemona, Lamento D'Ariane etc....
Some thoughts. Hughes undoubtedly skated the best that night. Even with more than a few under rotated jumps. 🤔 Re-watched Kwans program without commentary, it was actually very pretty. Especially the ending minute of so. Beautiful artistry. How these judges thought Irina out performed Kwan here is the real tragedy. How Irina believes she won with that body language is beyond me. Her coach should have set her straight. That program had zero artistic value. She's lucky the judges were busy figuring out the math with Hughes, because she truly skated no better than 4th. Sasha and her artistry is just sublime. Just a zen master.
Unfortunately Michelle fell, she is my favorite. Even she fell, she acted still so beautiful like nothing happened. Maybe that's why Michelle is a legend.
@@ferdyspears Michelle got 5 World medals and 3 slivers and 2 bronzes. Michelle also got 9 US titles. Michelle finished no lower than 3rd place between 1995 ~ 2004, her longevity was unreal and great.
No matter how Michelle was placed relative to Irina, it was gonna be a lose-lose situation in terms of fairness. Had Michelle been placed 2nd in front of Irina, she would've won the gold medal, which despite how great she was, she didn't deserve it that night. It would also rob Sarah Hughes of the win, I say rob because Sarah skated really well and was deserving of the gold. Placing Irina 2nd prevented Michelle from winning which was fair, but is also unfair to Michelle herself because even with the fall, I personally think she still had the better programs overall. I personally feel that Sasha should've been on the podium, I know she fell in the free skate, but she should've been 2nd after the short imo
why do people keep saying slutskaya should’ve won when her routine was not only less difficult than hughes, but also badly choreographed and plagued with sloppy landings. i’m aware that one of hughes’ combinations was under rotated, but it doesn’t change the fact that her overall program was cleaner and had better artistry.
@@elena_kmb Slutskaya (sloppy landings + one VERY forward landing), Kwan (two-footed triple toe + hand down) and Cohen (fall) all made major mistakes which broke the flow of their choreography. I agree that is ridiculous it is one thing to be partial to the athlete from your own nation, but that is just ridiculous. But we’re talking about the Russians, and they are infamous for their cheating, and doping of their athletes. That may sound harsh, but it is the truth.
This was so hard for me to watch. I so wanted Michelle to win. There are many great skaters who should have won Olympic Gold, but didn't. She is one of them.
Compared to the mess Irina and Michelle made on the ice - wouldn't have mattered. Irina and Michelle choked I actually thought Sasha skated better than Irina and Michelle.
Pure stupidity .... If we had to measure the height of the jumps and the quality of the glide MK and IS would be eliminated as the American is glued to the ice and stiff as a post and as the Russian is disorderly in her slides and his attitudes.. These two there have no grace and if you are only able to retain the under rotation of the jumps of SH that you do not see the class the elegance the performance of the 2002 Olympic champion compared to the mediocre performances and general impressions given by MK and IS is that you are blind (to be polite) and you don't understand what real figure skating is
@@RachelDavisMatthews Michelle kwan should be the winner if she stayed with Frank Carroll. She beat herself, but she moved on to win the 2003 World championship.
Had she skated in the last group, her scores would have been higher; but since she was in the penultimate group, the judges HAVE to leave room for the top five skaters (Hughes, Slutskaya, Kwan, Cohen, Butyrskaya)
Even though Michelle Kwan is my all time favorite athlete ❤, but I think Scheherazade was a wrong choice for her because she normally skates to music nobody skates to such as Lyra Angelica, East of Eden, Red Violin, Taj Mahal, Dream of Desdemona, Lamento D'Ariane etc.... That was her trademark.
I felt heart-broken for Irina. But after that bold performance ended in a bitter disappointment a year before at the worlds she decided to skate cautiously here. Her program and skating in general were incomparably more mature than those of Hughes’ but too reserved and cautious to win it.
This was the last Olympics the United States dominated in the ladie's figure skating. Today it is all Russian girls, with quads, and other very difficult elements. I would be surprised if an American girl even makes it in the top 10 in the upcoming Olympics.
The Russian girls just kids, come and go, they couldn't stop grow up and everything changed. I don't think that anyone of the Russian girls would be a legend like Michelle.
So... this event was the reason why Sochi Ladies' robbing happened. I think if this scoring system had valued a perfect program more, Irina should have won, and just based on skating skill and overall program presentation, Michelle should have won. Sorry to Sarah and her fan, but she wasn't any near to the gold medal.
Anne I agree. I think Sasha is not the American ideal figure - typical white, east side, upper-class. Sarah is the perfect example of those, like Gracie. So combined to Sasha’s inconsistency, she lost many acknowledgements she should have deserved.
I agree to a certain extend. I think that in 2002 the judges were ready to hand the gold to Michelle (as long as she stayed on her feet), and they already settled Irina for silver. Then Michelle fell in the free, but luckily Sarah had had the skate of her life just before Kwan skated and was temporarily first; so in the end they judges didn't changed the standings and placed Irina second nonetheless: because it was in the US, and the majority wanted Michelle to win, and even if she didn't win, at least it was a fellow American and not her rival (very poor behaviour, the opposite of being impartial and promoting the 'olympic spirit'). In 2014 Russia desperately wanted gold in Ladies (the only Olympic gold they were missing) and they didn't care who was going to win it. At first the favourite was going to be Lipnitskaya, but as soon as she fell in the short, the judges overscored Sotnikova to secure first place for Russia. Also, at least four judges in the judging panel in Sochi were either Russian/had relationship with Russia. It was premeditated.
This was Michelle's weakest program. That program was so spare jump wise, if she wasn't perfect, she didnt have a chance. I had to suffer through Urmanov, Petrenko, and Baiul winning gold where it all came down to a jump count. I can live with Hughes winning. Lipinski wasn't soup yet when she won in 1998 choreography wise either. Michelle need to work in her speed and another jump combo. I wanted Sasha to win, but the chances were nil due to nerves.
The concept for the Salt Lake City medals was that they would look somewhat unpolished and uneven around the edges, to reflect the natural rocks of Utah landscape. I actually think they're really pretty when you consider that.
That was such a strange event. Top three ladies were not at their best. Usually one of them is perfect. In this case, the winner came out of nowhere! I had always thought Sarah should had placed third in sp thus making her win less “controversial” so to speak.
Slutskaya's wasn't robbed at all, she was overscored and only should have placed 4th. Her programs were choreographically weak, with lackluster musical interpretation, and uninspired performances. She didn't do enough technically to make up for her artistic deficit. Kwan's 3F in the SP may have been underrotated, but there's a lot more to skating than that. Her form and attention to detail is superior to Slutskaya, and her programs are more layered and musical. Slutskaya wasn't even perfect on the 3F in the SP, a transition into the jump was required, and it could be said she had too long of a break into it. Nor was she clean on the 3F in the LP.

BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE
Hughes had such guts attempting two 3-3's but dang she almost URed most of her jumps. Still a pretty program though.

I can’t believe how much figure skating has evolved since this Olympics, technicality has definitely improved as well as form during spins and jumps.
Yes spins were sort of a joke until 2004 lol

Figure Skaters are so beautiful
Its been wonderful to watch some of the skaters from the earlier groups so joyful & entertaining! Once an Olympian always an Olympian.

This is what cost Michelle Kwan the gold medal here: (1.) two footed her first triple toe in the combination at 3:39:34. (2.) Then she was angled in the air on the landing for the Triple Flip and took a fall: 3:40:04.
But she was also slow, scared, and unhappy. When things are unfolding for the judges in real time, it’s not quite the same as when everyone analyzes it on TH-cam for the next 20 years.

Unfortunately she fell. But it also made Michelle to be a Olympics legend without gold.

Re-watched Kwans program without commentary, it was actually very pretty.
@@TT-ee4qp she's a legend because she won what 5 or 6 World titles?

Compared to the mess Irina and Michelle made on the ice - wouldn't have mattered. Irina and Michelle choked I actually thought Sasha skated better than Irina and Michelle.
@@RachelDavisMatthews I agree.

Michelle kwan should be the winner if she stayed with Frank Carroll. She beat herself, but she moved on to win the 2003 World championship.

Sarah Hughes was a middle skater who was lucky to win the gold.
3:57:04 for Sarah fans, you get a tiny bit earlier shot of her reaction to winning. Not the audio but you can imagine. 3:13:01 *squeak*
I don't know much about the scoring but was Fumie a little underrated here?
Not just a little.
Had she skated in the last group, her scores would have been higher; but since she was in the penultimate group, the judges HAVE to leave room for the top five skaters (Hughes, Slutskaya, Kwan, Cohen, Butyrskaya)
I wish you would have put the name of the music selections the ladies were skating to.....
Not hard to look them up on Wiki
Это было ужасно
Как они вообще там катаются под это????🤦♀️🤷♀️
I love Suguri and Cohen 😍😍
This was the last Olympics the United States dominated in the ladie's figure skating. Today it is all Russian girls, with quads, and other very difficult elements. I would be surprised if an American girl even makes it in the top 10 in the upcoming Olympics.
The Russian girls just kids, come and go, they couldn't stop grow up and everything changed. I don't think that anyone of the Russian girls would be a legend like Michelle.
Mariah Bell finished in the top 10 in 2022
I know Kwan and Slutskaya were disappointed, but when you can fall/blunder on the ice and still take home an Olympic medal... be happy.
So... this event was the reason why Sochi Ladies' robbing happened.
Their award medals don’t look as good as the ones from Nagano. The Nagano Olympic medals were beautiful.
What about the medals of 2006, 2014 and 2018? The one awarded in the 2006 winter Olympic looked like thin donuts.
The concept for the Salt Lake City medals was that they would look somewhat unpolished and uneven around the edges, to reflect the natural rocks of Utah landscape. I actually think they're really pretty when you consider that.
@@SweetSirenia oh ok. Didn’t know that.
That was such a strange event. Top three ladies were not at their best. Usually one of them is perfect. In this case, the winner came out of nowhere! I had always thought Sarah should had placed third in sp thus making her win less “controversial” so to speak.
Slutskaya was robbed. She should be 1st in SP and should be win gold medal
I'm afraid her FS wasn't good at all and I don't know how she got the 2nd place in it. Kwan and Cohen performed their programs much better...
Ria 3 no. Kwan and Cohen did many mistakes in their routine. Kwan also underrated 3F in SP, and it was so unfair that her put 1st after SP
Zuranthium are you hater of Slutskaya?
The way everyone was falling on their jumps 😅
Not “everyone” lol
Because vaulting in the air, spinning around 3 times and landing is extremely difficult.
salt lake figure skating pairs please😉
3:57:05 That and Tara Lipinski, just iconic moments that will live in infamy!
I feel sorry for Sarah because she's so happy to enjoy Michelle's fell. But I think Sarah just too surprised to …… she was just a kid
@@TT-ee4qp she wasn't celebrating Michele's fall, that's the moment she found out she won the gold!
Слуцкая на льду как асфальтоукладчик, которого зачем то поставили на каток
