I have just driven this road. Mid october on a perfect cloudless day, hardly another car for the full 50 miles, and after driving 1600 miles from London. It was the best driving experience of my life.

Just drove this road before yesterday and I completely agree with Top Gear, this must be the best road in the world! I drove from the south and had to stop many times to just admire the view, all the waterfalls and rocks just waiting and threatening to start rolling over the road... scary. The south side was sunny and relatively warm, but once trough the 900 meter long tunnel at the top, at the other side of the mountains it was a completely different world! Cold and dark, thick clouds and snow!
Cannabis is a genus of flowering plants which includes 3 different species, one of them contains THC or tetrahydrocannabidol. That tea is actually made of normal cannabis which is common in Europe and its used for industrial purposes, bird food etc; The road that they used is a dirt road because is a TV-show and they thought that TEM is boring.

See? Romania isn't so bad after all. Yes,we have some issues with our economy, health care, education and others, but other than that we have awesome landscapes,breath-taking views,a tone of culture and we love our country as it is. #romanianandproudofit
yes, i am romanian and i know that. shame that the country hasn't evolved since Rock Age just because of extreme corrupted people that are everywhere. this country could be the most beautiful country in Europe. i guess it's never going to happen :'(
I really hope that Romania will have a bright future after all the shit you've been through. i think our dutch politicians are no good anymore, they only care about banks and big companies. Romania for the win!!! Just as beautiful as Italy, Italy has history Romania the future i hope.
I drove almost all the way down on the north side with almost zero visibility at times, and I only read afterwards that that side is even more spectacular than the south side! I didn't see anything on my descent but I find it difficult to imagine that it could be better than the other one. I think that there are no words to describe what you see. I guess I have to go back and see the northern part of the road!
The highway was closed to traffic at the time TopGear was filming its show. On a regular day, you can find cars coming from the opposite direction and that changes everything. Cause if you're "on the gas" and you need to cut the corner, you and someone else are going to have a very bad day (and probably) night, and a 95 km walk (if you make it alive, that is).
Been there twice, of which once was a road trip from belgium and once natives showed me around this beautiful country. I must say it is one of the most amazing sights I've ever witnessed. What they say is false tho, there's an amazing campsite up the mountain wall and there are great hotels nearby also, with very very good food !
In September 2009 the cast and crew of the British television show Top Gear were seen filming along the road.[2] The segment appeared in first episode of Series 14 which first aired November 15, 2009.
I'm about to drive the Transfăgărășan road in the upcoming summer on my motorcycle, does anyone know if I should drive from North to South (or the other way around?) to drive uphill and not downhill? :) I prefer to drive uphill with the bike when it comes to mountain passes. Cheers.
+Aatruss It's twisty on both sides. The southern side (where the Dam is) is a much longer approach. The North begins to climb about 50km from Sibiu (worth a visit itself). There's an 800m long Tunnel at the top with the Balea Lac Hotel on the Northern side of it. The road will only just be open in June, so if you're going early summer be prepared for potentially exciting weather at the top. Depending on how long you're in the country for, I would make a loop from Sibiu linking up this road and the Transalpina pass, which is very nearly as mad and even higher which is further west. Most of the footage of the twisty bit of the Fagarasan highway is on the North, so if you're pretty sure you want to ride up that bit then do the loop clockwise. Have a google for some accommodation away to the South, most large villages have several pensiunas (guesthouses) which are good quality and cheap. It's a stunningly beautiful country! Enjoy! (be aware that many of the smaller roads in the region are not tarmacced so some judicious use of google maps and streetview in advance won't go amiss)
+Robert Wragge-Morley Thanks! Trans alpina is already on the list, will do that one from north to south and then drive up north again to do the Transfagarasan road from north to south as well before heading over to Serbia :)
is much less to climb from north to south btw.you will see transfagarasan is better done than transalpina and much more spectacular.at the top of the road, balea lac(2000 m) i suggest you to make a pause there and climb on the top of the mountain, and additional 350-400 m.the views are so damn good and you can do a walk over there,on the cliffs.if you do this, you will sure thank me.

In all fairness there's traffic on that road that will only allow you small portions of speed. When they came in Romania, they closed down the road for two days for their filming (so yes, it's all staged - and no they didn't end up under the dam by accident, they slept at a hotel at nights - and again no, the petrol stations are never closed, they're opened 24/7).
