@@Lamidemonami7891 yes, I ultimately didn’t like the film quite as much as them bc I read the book first and just loved it so much more. I still have a ton of respect for the film tho
@@readem_blog that’s how I felt after my first watch but then I rewatched it and the film is so messy. There’s so many things that didn’t need to be changed from the book that just made the film worse, so many sequences filled with useless dialogue (the car scenes aren’t nearly as meaningful in the film as the novel), and the house sequence feels like it never ends, and not in the way that it’s supposed to feel like that. I respect aspects of it, such as a Kaufman even attempting a 20 minute driving scene of just dialogue, but ultimately the film feels like a total failure and a complete disservice to the book. @@parasahmed9891 I loved it. But I was hooked from the beginning. Rewatching it was also very good. I think that’s why the movie didn’t dragged for me. So if the first 20 min didn’t do anything for you, maybe you just don’t like it. And that’s perfectly ok. I feel like there are stuff in the middle of the movie that might interest you but the ending might be frustrating or confusing leaving a bad impression of the movie overall. I don’t know.

The Invisible Man is obviously a good horror movie, but something tells me that you have not seen 'Saint Maud', which punches the crap out of 'Invisible Man', or 'Murder Me, Monster', nor 'Possessor'. There were exceptionally impressive horror movies this year!

A final thought, you guys would be devoured by Pauline Kael, as an aphrodisiac. You really are that good! Ebert and Siskel were the high bar to reach, the iconoclasts of their era. I feel comfortable saying that you two could fill their shoes quite comfortably. In fact, I hope it happens. Television (especially after Brian Lineham) has been a dead-zone for intelligent discussion about movies for two decades. Until now. Your passion and charisma is stirring, sometimes profound. And you are a hella easy on the eyes. My apologies for such a lame sexist comment, but does the truth hurt? I should hope not. Keep doing what you're doing. When you love something, sometimes it loves you back.
**in case no one wants spoiled of the lists before watching the video, don’t read this comment first” These are great lists. I’ll be honest that I didn’t care for I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS (although I’ve either really liked or really loved every other film Kaufman has been involved with). The one movie I wish was high up on your lists was SOUND OF METAL
I had a tie for #1. this year. I hate when that happens, but I just couldn't decide! The other 9 were: 10 - Ghost Tropic 09 - Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains 08 - Moffie 07 - Never Rarely Sometimes Always 06 - Otac (Father) 05 - Suburban Birds 04 - Black Bear 03 - First Cow 02 - Collective
So are they both the Oscar expert or is the Oscar expert just one of them since they are basically the same person does it matter who the Oscar expert is
i don’t know if you’ve done this already, but you should make a video about movies you disagree on. like one of you loves it and the other one doesn’t even like it very much
'And Then We Danced' was a adequate, though melodramatic, gay themed movie, but there are several more that exceed the simple charms of that Georgian film: 'Ammonite', ' White Lie', 'Bad Education', 'Straight Up', 'Young Hunter', 'Summer of '85', 'Barn', and especially the outstanding South African film, 'Moffie', which 'And Then We Danced' could only hope to champion.
I have not established my top 10 yet BUT it would feature Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Promising Young Woman, Minari, Saint Maud, and Sound of Metal. By the way, was I the only one that was not a big fan of I’m Thinking of Ending Things?
Though I am, in general, appreciative of the streaming juggernaut, I still have very mixed feelings and gripes towards Netflix. One, that especially irks me, is the sense that money flows so easily and readily that great directors (auteurs, or budding) often seem like they are creating somewhat below the level of their past films because, perhaps, there is a subconscious feeling that there is much less risk under a system that does not share in a meaningful way, the accurate bounty utilized, and the profits, or lack thereof, generated. An aura of substantive failure that would colour a movie, had it been released and/or compared to a film distributed by the studio system, barely exists, nor does detailed financial transparency or accuracy. My point is, removing that scrutiny and pressure for a director may result in a finished production that is second-rate or maybe even a little rushed or sloppy, or just crap. Frankly, with Netflix, I find that great, long established directors often make their least challenging, inherently flawed, and most lazily constructed paste-by-number movies that are algorithmic by proxy. For example, the Netflix creations from Ben Wheatley, Steven Soderbergh, Ron Howard (not that he was ever a great director), Antonio Campos, David Fincher, Dee Rees, Adam Wingard, Duncan Jones, Jeremy Saulnier, Gareth Evans, George Clooney, David Mackenzie, The Coens, Dan Gilroy, David Michod, etc, have, for the most part, been lacking, if not dreadful. In other words, for every Marriage Story, there are 10 craptastical movies to bore yourself silly with. I suggest a tranquillizer instead. What's worse, is their acquisition of foreign films, movies that would certainly rot in obscurity had Netflix not come along with their bottomless pockets and faux luster of diversity and inclusion. Usually they reek of bland, bottom binned 21st century VHS garbage that sadly, or righteously, ruined a career, a company (or two) with the boulder for brains attached to, not, just the price tag, but the warning sound of a toilet flushing away money as it gargles the audible hushed disclaimer or question?: tax right-off, disposable blather or producer spite sans consequences! At any rate, Netflix will remain somewhat valuable as long as it makes movies, though rare, like The Irishman, Beasts of No Nation, I'm Thinking About Ending Things, and Da 5 Bloods. I'm not completely throwing the baby out with the currency bath water, but please, I beseech you, spend your dollars more wisely. You could start by releasing the stats on movies directed by lauded artists, who, under the current status quo, never have to face the humility and ego-puncturing that a flop so-rightly attaches itself to. Shame, reality, and criticism can be a positive disinfectant, stirring the creatives to use the exorbitant money-train wisely. In fact, if Netflix would have set aside some of the budget for an editor and script doctor, Antonio Campos's, The Devil All the Time, may have been a good movie
i find it sad that for the past two years, both of your agreed top movies of the year (portrait of a lady on fire in 2019 and i’m thinking of ending things in 2020) were both snubbed in the oscars

"Time' was a good documentary, but there were stretches that left me bored. This is no 'Collective', 'Stories We Tell', or 'O.J. : Made in America' (four hours and not a single lackadaisical moment). "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" isn't completely out of the running for an Adapted Screenplay nomination. "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" got far less screenplay nominations overall before it surprised us all on Nominations morning in 2019.
It is very weird how I coincide with Justin almost a 100% always, even now, his second movie is my number 1 movie - PYW, but his number 1 choice - ITOET is our biggest difference ever, I hate this pretentious and superficial movie more and more with each day.

@@parasahmed9891 Give it a full watch and if you didn’t like it, at least you tried to experience it
@@blacktoad2425 thats true, might give it a go tonight, thanks! 😊
@@Victor-qx3vx thanks for the reply and tips! I think my house was quite noisy at the time as well so I'll give it another go!

6.Wolfwalkers
7.Another Round
8.Minari
9.The Father

I'm working on the Golden Globe Nominated movies now. Waiting for Nomandland & Promising Young Woman. When theatres were opened I would see on a weekend 3+movies.
I was so sad to see I' thinking of ending things got snubbed so much at the awards. Another Kaufman masterpiece
The Invisible Man is obviously a good horror movie, but something tells me that you have not seen 'Saint Maud', which punches the crap out of 'Invisible Man', or 'Murder Me, Monster', nor 'Possessor'. There were exceptionally impressive horror movies this year!
Favorite films by genre:
Comedy: Palm Springs
Horror/Sci fi: Possessor
Foreign: Beanpole (thank you for its inclusion on your list!)
Drama: Nomadland
Honorable Mention: Sound of Metal
Animated: Soul or Wolfwalkers?
@@tymoviedatabase7788 so far behind on that genre, but the score for Soul is fantastic imo. Looking forward to seeing both soon!
POSSESSOR!!! Yes totally agree with that
And then we danced!!!! Bravo. Touched me so deeply.
I saw the Invisible Man in the theater. A scary movie. I'm missing that experience.
My top 10:-
1.Nomadland
2.The Trial of the Chicago 7
3.Minari
4.Promising Young Woman
5.Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
6.The Father
7.Soul
8.One night in Miami
9.Da 5 Bloods
10.Tenet
This probably the most basic list of this year 😂
Please review Saint Maud. I watched it last night and it blew me away.
Agreed! I watched it two days ago and it did the same to me! It might be one of my favorites of the year!
We probably will soon! Have wanted to see it for over a year now
@@TheOscarExpert yessss I’m excited!!!
Oscar Expert, Brother Bro, and YMS are all Kaufman stans wow we love the existential depression
**in case no one wants spoiled of the lists before watching the video, don’t read this comment first”
These are great lists.
The other 9 were:
10 - Ghost Tropic
09 - Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains
08 - Moffie
07 - Never Rarely Sometimes Always
06 - Otac (Father)
05 - Suburban Birds
04 - Black Bear
03 - First Cow
02 - Collective
So are they both the Oscar expert or is the Oscar expert just one of them since they are basically the same person does it matter who the Oscar expert is
i don’t know if you’ve done this already, but you should make a video about movies you disagree on. like one of you loves it and the other one doesn’t even like it very much
Nice list! I love the support for i’m thinking of ending things! Also, have y’all watched Wolfwalkers? Personally, I liked it better than Soul
No you aren't.
You definitely aren’t, I thought it was really terrible
Thanks for friending me on Gold Derby.
i find it sad that for the past two years, both of your agreed top movies of the year (portrait of a lady on fire in 2019 and i’m thinking of ending things in 2020) were both snubbed in the oscars
Great #1. We needed to talk more about this movie. SHOULD be noticed more for awards. The acting is great, screenplay, editing is genius.
