    There are definitely not enough videos about sheet metal out there! I would love to see the whole process..

      I agree so much. There is little video about sheet metal work on youtube, where almost all other metal and wood machining processes are very popular out there. Sheet metal is so versatile and there are dozens of way to process and make features.

    An idea to try. In experimental aircraft building, a common task is to make lightening holes in ribs using flanging dies. These can be made in plywood, but you need to have access to a lathe or cnc router. However it looks like a 3d printed hole flanging die would work as well and solve a common problem for home aircraft builders. The thickness I had to deal with was .025" 6061-T6.

      I actually already tried that and it does work. We call it a dimple die. I'll probably make a video on that as well.

    That is very cool. I once had to make a louver and struggled. I didn’t imagine that 3d printed plastic could do it.

      I didn't think it would work either but after seeing the tools from the last video bend 3.4mm thick steel, I'm sure there are plenty more types of forming tools that will work as well.

    You really caught my attention last week with your 3d printed press brake tools and now again with your louver tooling. Do you think you could try a tight offset die?

    Very cool stuff, I’ve hand made some forming tools years ago before 3d printing, now I’d love to try some of the same. Love the turret punch btw!

    Love what you’re doing in this series with 3D printed tooling! How about using a urethane pad to form sheet? Or a matching die set?

      Thank you! We have urethane tooling that is commonly used for when we can not have any tool marks on parts. What do you mean by a matching die set?

      Sorry, a matching set of tools similar to the louver only in a more complex or larger shape over a larger area? Kinda pushing the limits of what this kinda tooling can do.

    You asked for suggestions for other forming tools. A large radius 1/4 circle bend. Something like 75mm / 3 inch radius.

    You might want to try this test on a larger piece of metal. It looks like where the metal should be stretching to form the ends of the louvre it's just deforming metal in from the edge. I think (guessing) you will experience much higher tool loads/deformation in a bigger work piece.
    Anyways it's 12:30 am here in the UK and you have just compelled me to go into my garage and find my (very) old Wilson tool demo plate. So how about...
    Spade tool, Bridge tool, Dimple Tool, Bursting Tool, Burst and flatten (Hole with a safe edge), Card Guide, Snail tool (For machine screws), Screw port tool, Lastly a hinge tool, this could be done as a progression tool in your pemserter (cough, heager press, cough). Now i'm off to bed, where's that subscribe button. :-)

      For sure! I just wanted to get the shape, size and clearance right for 18ga. stainless steel. I'll be making a larger tool now for using with the press brake that hopefully forms 5 louvers at once. I already designed a dimple tool and I have that same Wilson tool plate!Thanks!

    Can you show us how to do a closed shape? For example bend a rectangle shape from a flat pattern so you only have one seam. The rectangle would be 1/2in wide by 2in long out of 10ga mild steel. I have heard of window tooling. But I thought maybe there is a simpler way. Do you have any tricks?

      The only way we would do that is use a forming tool with a window through it. Sometimes we will just take a regular forming tool and mill a window into it. If the part is narrow enough, a window isn't necessary and we can just get away with using a tool that has "side ears" so it basically forms half a window.

    I'm assuming the 3D printed die doesn't have the strength to shear the sheet metal, but have you tried just out of curiosity? Is the sheet gauge too thick?

      No, I have not tried and will not be trying it. The stainless steel in the video can't even be cut with steel hand shears. You could "cut" thinner pieces of aluminum with plastic but it will rip instead of cut so you'll never get a never get a clean cut edge like you would with a metal blade.

      @@BaldurNorddahl you might be able to do that but for my purposes, I'm already laser cutting several other holes and the shape of the final part anyway so cutting a slit takes 1 second with the laser for me. You would need metal in the top and bottom section to properly cut and form the louver at the same time.

    Seeing all this metal forming pla tools, im curious if you have used metal filament (not just colour)? As I've read it involves extra post processing (with size reduction also 🤔)

      PLA is actually very strong and it you do only few houndreth bends it will do just fine if designed right. Of course it has limits, but for thickness less than 2.5mm it will do the job excellently.

    The turret punch machine will not sound so cool after a couple of hours of continuous run time. Very cool on being able to 3d print this stuff. Do you think it would handle a regular punch press? Punch all five at once, so the alignment is locked.

      I don't mind the sound of the turret running at work but that's me. The tool should work with the press brake and I plan on forming all 5 louver at the same time with one tool. I would use a back gauge and side gauges with the press brake so the alignment would be fine.

      @@ProtoG42 From the way you set up the test run, it looked like you were going to do a progressive step. Which works but you get variation. All at once is the way to go whenever you can. How big(tons) is your press brake?

      @@bradquinn4161 yeah, I just wanted to make sure I had the right shape and clearance for 18ga stainless steel before printing a larger tool. The press brake is 80 tons which is plenty for this job.

    could you find a way to make a small slot for a metal cutting edge?

      This tool is for a customer job that I am already laser cutting so adding the small slit only take 1 second. I'm sure you could design it to accept a metal blade but you would most likely need one blade on the top tool and one blade on the bottom tool if you want a clean cutting edge.

    Have you tried annealing the pla prints to make them more resistant?
    It would be very interesting to see if you gain any benefits on this kind of application.

      I have considered it but have not done it because the change in overall dimensions after annealing is not something I want to deal with.

    You say you didn't expect the tool to be able to cut the louver and thus laser cut the slot. Did you end up testing if this was necessary?

      I did not test, but I can say with 100% certainty that plastic will not cut the louver into stainless steel. It will emboss the shape even without the slit.

      I did You can get pla + to cut the Louvre but only in 0.6mm alloy you get a few goes at it but it's basically tearing it after 4 uses
