Really good tips for beginners. I do disagree with a few:
    1) I never list anything at less than the minimum that I would be willing to take for it. Ebay, for whatever reason, attracts people who are ridiculously, outrageously (almost beyond comprehension sometimes) cheap. Listing something for 99 cents (unless it's super rare) is not worth the risk.
    2) Shipping supplies are much cheaper on Ebay than they are at the dollar store. And you don't need to buy a thousand to get a substantial discount over dollar store prices. I buy all my shipping supplies from ebay sellers unless I run out of something and need it immediately. You will usually save at least 50% over brick and mortar prices.
    3) I do three and five day auctions. I've tried seven day auctions. Generally speaking, almost nobody even looks at the item until the last few days. Seven day auctions were just increasing the amount of time I had to sit on an item. I rarely do auctions anyway. I typically find out what the item is selling for on ebay, price it towards the low end of the market and use a fixed price listing with best offer. It might take a little bit longer to sell. But I would rather have that happen than to lose money and sell it quickly. I guess it depends on what your priorites are. There is no one size fits all approach. The best thing to do is experiment and find what works best for you.

If you wanna make money online, you gotta start today. take action as I did couple of months ago when I had all my bills due and struggling to make money. I found this great method of earning money online at *ATOCE. COM* where it showed me step by step what I needed to do in order to generate over $2000 in just one week. I had no online experience and I still made $2,857 !! This is real guys…Hope this have helped anyone.

Also, shipping is CHEAPER if you print labels online. You can do it through PayPal (you need a scale, but services like stamps.com offer them free with a free month). Then get USPS to pickup. I saved hundreds last year after I discovered that!
Also, I've been selling online for 20+ years and I would never start an auction for 99 cents. I rarely use auctions as buy it now works best for me.

I have been a power seller I am not at the moment. Been on ebay since 2003. I do not recommend ever starting a auction at .99 cent good way to get burnt. The new eBay is not the same that used to be a great way to do it. With the new search engine Cassini on eBay . eBay can hide your listings and people don't see it. Off and on. If you have the post office pick your items up I believe you have to do online pre payed postage? You can not pay when they pick up. I live 3 min. From the po I take my packages. You gave a lot of good information . Thanks for sharing!

Yes, it's online pre-paid postage and you print out the shipping label, affix it and you're good to go :) When you're as busy as my husband and I, it definitely saves the hassle of having to line up forever at our local post office (which is always super busy!)

I agree the 99 thing is not a good idea anymore. I am in the UK and used to start all auctions at 99p and I don't anymore because of the fees etc. I was in a discussion in a UK ebay forum recently and we worked out that any auction that came to less than £4.99 really isn't worth it anymore once you factor in fees etc.
I don't list much anymore as the UK domestic postage is so high now that it is cheaper for people to buy the goods new. I do still search for 'completed listings' though as I occasionally find something that is desirable.

I just recently lost on a $35 dress on Ebay, by starting it at .99cents. It sold for $7.50 at the end of the auction, but I really thought it would at least sell for $25 because I saw that another seller sold the same dress for that amount, and started at .99cents. Sighs** I don't think I will do that again..

Nicely done...thorough and brief. I don't think starting at .99 works too well anymore. 15 years ago, you could get bidding wars going throughout the run of an auction. Nowadays, people are smarter about bidding and wait until the last day and often pick something off at or near your lowest opening bid. I trend to use 30 days auction with free shipping. Seems to work best for me. But an occasional auction is a good wayu to cross-promote your 30 day auctions, especially if you are using the free Auctiva scrolling gallery in your ads.

I sell a lot of my homeschool materials on eBay. I use the profits to help pay for my next year's school books. I also start the action at the lowest price I am willing to take. With smart phones a buyer can wait all the way up to the final seconds of an action before placing a bid. I know because I have done it. There is too much risk with school books. I love your channel. I do so enjoy watching you every week. Your energy is contagious. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

I do well on ebay too. But two things. Make sure you know about all the hidden fees. You don't pay to post and you get so many free pictures, but after that, you pay a price on the final cost. Then you have to have an account (like Paypal). and if you want to accept credit cards you have to have the premium account. Both paypal also charge a fee based on final costs. But definitely search out the demand of item. (medical stuff and old stuff like books or small machinery sell great). dee

Kathryn, great video! I've been selling a lot of children's books and I also group them into sections, like weather, sports, etc. I've used media mail when shipping DVDs or single books that were mine that I sell. Ebay has been a blessing with some extra money that I can definitely use, and I'm also getting rid of clutter.

I've been in serious decluttering mode and just started selling some stuff on ebay a couple weeks ago after not having done so in a couple years. I'm pleased that I'm making some extra money, but it is some real work! Researching what will or won't be worthwhile to sell, photographing, writing descriptions, storing the items until the items sell and are paid for, finding shipping materials really does take quite a bit of time and effort. I've had problems with people not paying or taking a really long time to pay. If I don't think the item will bring good money, I definitely just take it to Goodwill rather than trying to sell it.
I do start my auctions cheaply and it really does seem to help attract more attention, but I also make sure that I wouldn't be upset if it actually sold for that. For items that are likely to sell for over $100 or something very specific that there are very few other auctions for, I usually start at $9.99, and that does seem to work well.

Very nice tutorial! I am an ebay Top Rated Seller/Power Seller, and I agree with BuildYourHome. IF I auction something, I start it at the lowest possible amount I would agree to sell the item for. At 99 cents, you could actually end up selling it for that with a huge loss. Every ebay seller has a different opinion about this, but that is just my 2 cents. :)

    • @DoItOnaDime
      @DoItOnaDime  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Wow, I've got lots of power seller subbies apparently. You go, girl! I personally do it in part to avoid the listing fee, and I haven't had an issue with something very valuable selling at a big loss...I find it drives lots of traffic due to the low price. But, as you say, it all depends on the seller and the item in question!

    • @roonie85
      @roonie85 10 ปีที่แล้ว

I guess there are a few of us out there :). My perspective is slightly different I suppose because I have all of my listings buy it now, but I do run an auction occasionally, especially if I have something unique. I have lots of inventory so I have enough listed to have steady sales instead of doing the casual decluttering. I started with just decluttering though, ebay is great for that. :)

DoItOnaDime Kayla H Definitely agree with Kayla on this. I would not give the advice to start out auctions at 99 cents unless you are prepared to actually sell it for 99 cents. I am a Power Seller (and youtuber) too, and I have burned myself in the past quite a bit on the 99 cents auctions - although sometimes they do work. Otherwise I enjoyed the video :-)

Kayla H Aw, thank you, Kayla - though my little corner on youtube is really small, as is the whole reseller community in general :-) Also, though I am a Power Seller, I do not do this full time or as my main income - it's a side job, but a super fun one. But I am lucky in that my main job allows me to work from home, which is why I can combine it well with ebay and my antique booth. Finally, it seems like Spring will never quite start here in Maine - I still have my fireplace on in the morning. But soooooon! Hope all is well down in summary South :-)

It's also a good idea to have a Pinterest board if you sell a particular type of item (I sell vintage cameras). You can add whatever item you just listed on ebay to your pinterest board and this way you get more exposure and possible traffic to your listed ebay item. Also, make sure to list everything Internationally. Ebay has a global shipping program and they calculate postage and collect it for international buyers; they even do the customs forms. All you have to do is quote postage the way you do normally and if it sells to another country you send it to ebays global shipping center in the US andthey do the rest. You get way more traffic that way also.

Actually you CAN make decent money on the stuff you have around your home. Have an old remote? Look it up before tossing it it could be worth 10-25 bucks. Any drips trays from indoor grills? Money maker there as well. Stuff I would have tossed actually made me money. Look it up before parting with it. I do free shipping for anything under 13 oz and build it into the price. I NEVER do .99 auctions anymore as you can do fixed priced listings for free now up to 50 a month. I never list 50 a month and I am a powerseller. Ebay is always changing. If you offer free shipping, returns and ship within 1 business day then it puts you inline for further discounts.

I am a casual seller on ebay and buyer. I like that when I am logged into ebay with my smart phone, they notify me when a bid is placed. So cool. The only complaint I have is with Paypal, which is owned by ebay. They hold your money for up to 21 days. This means the shipping and packing comes out of your pocket right way. Paypal says it's in case a buyer has a complaint. but I think it's about Paypal getting interest for holding it.

Great video! you should do a video on how to avoid scams and non paying buyers. I use the buyer filter options, such as the buyer has to have so many feedbacks to bid on my items, no new buyers can bid on my items, and they must be verified through PayPal, etc, etc, the list goes on. The filters are awesome! I get less traffic, but I'd rather not sell something than lose money.

I have been selling on Ebay since 2000 and have been a power seller on & off. I usually have luck with kids jackets & shoes, handbags and bedding {all brand name}. I never have any luck with clothes {except kids pajamas!}, unless they are a hot selling, brand name. I don't recommend starting the auctions at .99, instead I offer free shipping...which in my opinion...sometimes catches a buyers eye more than a low starting price :)

I bought a really nice evening gown once for $5.00 but my family thought it was too flashy for me; I flipped it for $30.00! Your advice to set a starting price of 99 cents is no good. The bidding is totally unpredictable, and it is entirely possible for an expensive item to get only one bidder, who gets it for 99 cents. That has happened to me. Sure you get more views of your item if you start it at 99 cents, but who needs all those cheapskates looking at your item who only want to pay 99 cents? Better to start at a higher (but reasonable) price and get serious bidders only. You'll get fewer views but better prices for your items.

    • @charlesberlew9690

+shopperoo99 There is definately a problem with Ebay. I've listed hundreds of items on ebay. I used to have a shop and these are all items that sold very well in my shop but on ebay nobody buys. The few sales I've had on ebay were cheap items under $10.00 that are not profitable after ebay and paypal take their fees . The better higher priced items that should be selling don't sell. I have been considering going to amazon or some other sight to sell my items. Ebay is just a waste of my time and money.

I agree with another comment. Starting your bid at 99 cents is a huge risk even with market research. I have seen beautiful lots of childrens clothes sell for only 99 cents and one listing had free shipping. Big uh oh! Start your bid at what you are willing to accept for that item. If you get multiple bids from then.. its all a plus :)
When doing market research you really need to look into how flooded a category is with a particular item you want to sell. You need to consider the time of year and holidays coming up.
The best thing you can do is search eBay for an item you want to sell. Look at what others are selling it for and to the left of your screen you will see you can click "SOLD LISTINGS" This is where you can see what your particular item has actually sold for and the date of the sale :)

great video thanks! do you sell you things straight from your phone to save time, eg; take photo and upload straight onto ebay or do you list them on your computer. wanting to try straight from my I phone due to the time factor but not sure it will look as good with same sale results.

I post stuff from my iPhone 5 and I swear my pictures look better then from my camera. I also use Siri to list it's pretty quik. Tip The I phone does not always show all the features as listing from a computer. After you list as long as there are no bids you can't tweek your listing on your computer revise. Good luck!

I would not suggest selling items for $.99. There are times that people end up selling items for $.99 and then blame themselves for listing for too low. I'd advice to set a price you are comfortable with but before setting a price, research your competitors and look at completed, sold listing to get an idea what an item had sold for before.
Children's clothing lots don't sell for as much as they used to sell. I sold my son's many lots of clothing (used) all high end brand names. Highest sale was $384.95 for 50 items

-doitonadime I buy a lot online, because I'm disabled, so I always have tons of all sizes of boxes + packaging materials. Knowing that a lot of people sell on eBay, I tried to donate these supplies to Goodwilll, expecting them to resell them inexpensively or even give them away. On the phone I was told they'd pick them up, but then got a call that the drivers had looked into the boxes because they were so light, & refused to take them, per Goodwilll policy. I then went on my neighborhood website (Next Door) and offered them for free. No one wanted them. Any ideas on how to give them away?

I wouldnt pay much attention to susan wells though as she is always just trying to get people to purchase books and such from her on how to ebay. Right now you can list up to 50 a month free fixed price or auction. I would only start an auction at what you want it to sell for. Ebay is not the same beast it was years ago. Just go to ebay and it walks you through ...so easy.

***** From my end, there is no fee if you put it up for auction with a BIN for the first 50 items (I guess) each 1st of the month. But somehow, I got hit with a lot of fees by clicking on the list 2 more times box.
So are you saying that if I list it as BIN (how about best offer), there is an option for Good till cancelled and i'll incur no listing fees? Is that only good for the first monthly 50?
Thanks so much; I'm new to this and those fees ate away at a lot of my paltry sales.

DON'T SELL ON EBAY!!! Their "buyers always win" policy will cost you big bucks in the end. So many horror stories, check it out. I just was scammed for $1500, plus the $150 eBay fees and shipping to Hawaii (yikes). They think they are Walmart and expect sellers to carry the returns load, and restrict sellers accounts if a customer complains. I had a friend doing $30k a month on eBay restricted down to $5k because of a frivolous complaint. Did eBay care? Not a bit. My friend had to shut his doors. EBAY SUCKS!

If it is light it might be cheaper just to send it with your own supplies. so it just depends on what you are sending but at least the option is there.
