Years ago someone gave a tip to never have your hands touching the item in the picture because it deters people. If you must hold something open to demonstrate or take a picture then wear white cotton gloves. It sounds weird but the image with his gloved hand looked really good and made it seem the item was well cared for.
This is absolutely true. I hate seeing peoples' hands touching things. One woman who sold jewelry modeled the rings on her hand with awful chipped nails. Disgusting!!! Put the item down on a counter and don't have anything in the background (plain wall or something).
Good to know! I also use a small light box to take photos of things like action figures etc. It really makes them look professional and sell well. For large items I prop them on my chair and use my fridge as a backdrop during the day.

I sell my better quality stuff on Mercari. So far in the past year I’ve made a little over $600. It’s a pain in the butt though having to package each thing up and print the label and take it to the post office. It’s teaching me that I need to be more mindful of what I allow into my home so I don’t have to have regrets and keep selling. I work very full time and am a single mom so it’s definitely not easy or fun.
I can relate lol Used to sell on Mercari but my goal is now to have more space so I’m donating all my daughters clothes to children that just got here from Honduras ❤
I really love the process of printing a lable and going to the post office. Each time I’m so happy that another crap is leaving my tine flat. I’m working on home office, and little walk to the post office near my home during the lunch break is good for me.

A few years ago I purchased a small cabinet at a yard sale for $15. Fast forward nearly 10 years later and I realized we no longer needed this piece of furniture. I sold it for $75. My son was horrified that I sold it for more than I bought it for, but I explained to him that the piece is definitely worth more these days, so the woman who bought it got a steal for today's prices.

Thank you for sharing .. I hate the clutter and it hassles my mind not knowing "how to sell" ... I asked an old man, almost 90 for a tip. He said, someone has to want it.
I have sold a large number of items on Facebook marketplace. However, what gets to me is that I research the prices to list items at and yet people offer half of that amount! I still have several boxes of items to sell and I’ve become so frustrated with people not showing up to buy items or offering ridiculous low amounts that I’ve stopped selling things. 😕
Me too. Facebook marketplace is particularly bad for it in our area. I literally can't even give stuff away because people don't show up to collect it. Then they'll message expecting me to deliver free items because their "car won't start" mechanics around here must be terrible!

Thanks so much for typing the name of the app! I couldn’t figure it out. It would be nice to have that as text in the video, either a little card she holds up, or added in editing (no idea how to do that though!)
We found that the resale value on second-hand books is usually pretty low, and now just find the free Little Libraries around the city to put used books into.
I think the idea is good. It is just that selling stuff does not make that much money in fact. Most things sell for less than 1/3 of its original price, even when sold cleverly. And I have a full-time time job, so selling takes a lot of time in my spare time. What you say may be true of you have a lot of expensive stuff lying around, and then secondly it is only relating to a mom who is stay at home to work full-time on that.
That’s totally true, I actually mention the fact in my more recent videos that my father had said my Barbies would pay for my college, but they sold for a half or a third of what he had paid for them in the 80s and 90s! I had a lot to sell, but not everyone has the time to sell so much. ❤️
@@gloriat8427 No worries. Yes, if you sell things from other people you can make a little money. I am currently doing vinted (not sure if you have this in the USA), but Marissa Zen lives in Germany now so she might know. Is an online platform for 2nd Hand clothes similar to Ebay, And some people sell things semi-professionally there, they get for free (in case people die or houses are cleared). That way they can make more money but as you correctly said you need to put in the work. But honestly that recquires a lot of motivation and work as well. Dont get fooled by people giving you figures they make with that. Is just marketing ;o) Depending on your job or education, you have to see whether it brings you joy. I personally find selling quite good as I have a problem to trash things. But I use my limited free-time for that, and in the end it is just extra work....
My mom kept all of that abd then had each kid go through and keep what was important to THEM. 5 boxes per kid went down to one. She also made t-shirt quilts from all the summer camps, sports, etc.
I tried this years ago and it takes so long for things to sell that I ended up just throwing away or donating. Certain rare items takes too long to sell. So, if you want to get rid of it fast selling won't do it.
I’m so new to TH-cam & have only been watching it on tv, so you are my first comment 😬 and first question. On my iphone, i’m looking for the downloadable links you said were 👇🏻 below, but I don’t any links; do I need to use my PC? 😳 my house is full of totes full of items I don’t know the value of becasso they came from my Dad’s clock shop, their estate, or what was in my grandparents house my grandpa didn’t know what to do with. There’s stuff from Caesar’s Palace from the ‘60s and all of their sterling silverware; I have statues, ceramics my Mom made, Nancy Drew plus a ton of other books, music boxes, marital assets 🙄🤬😱
I can never understand what the hell to do when it comes to selling items online Such ad the labeling part on a box? Like you put a tshirt or some shit in a Lil package or something then label that with the buyers address? Does the buyers address pop up for you to even find that out? There's so many questions
Great video!:) I love your tips, and declutter has always been hard for me and I I already tried your method a little years ago when I first figured out how to use a Smartphone and I saw so many wonderful videos, websites and Apps. I tried to narrow it down to three boxes: Sell, Donate, and Recycle/Trash and my pile was good but it was hard selling it and it was so much stuff/ items that it got too heave just to get up and run errands to drop off the Donation pile, and then the Recycle pile that I forgot about it. In 2017,2018 was the best years that I started decluttering and selling on eBay and then Mercari App. It was so fun to sell and list my old toys, jewelry, accessories old appliances on eBay and shipping was no problem and did not cost me much money to buy the label, print it at the library and then box it up and drop it off at the Post Office. I made a good chunk of cash that I saved up in my PayPal. Nowadays it’s 2024 I sold nothing and the prices are sky high. I don’t know what’s going on with eBay and the USPS shipping because the shipping label and the specifics for selling something small in a First Class Package or Media Mail does not exist anymore??? Plus the fees on eBay takes away from what I sold and my profit is pretty low at the end of the process. So what am I left with after all this Decluttering? Pennies to a few dollars in my piggy bank? lol I’m looking for new selling Platforms that is free to use. Any suggestions please comment below! Thank you for sharing your awesome video! PS. There’s a Declutter App that is actually called Declutter, I think but it’s spelled differently and it was my first App to sell old books, old DVD, movies, CDs, and older Cassette tapes and VHS abd smartphones, electronics etc. but it not accept any of my old books and did not recognize the barcode and the vhs tapes. So, where do I sell old media or recycle them?
Hi, thank you so much for your video. Can you please help me I am new on all technology and I want to sell stuff on line. How can I have an store as you said in the video? Thank you so much for your answer
My instincts are to follow these steps, but please tell me any lessons learned from this approach. Step 1: Declutter House: completely minimize every closet, storage space & basement and throw it all into the garage. Step 2: Declutter Garage: Organize, photograph and sell. I know this overload in the garage will be an overwhelming sight and not sure of the best way to set myself up for success. Any tips?
I’ve sold several things on both Craigslist and FB marketplace and if I have a valued high item and want this price, it typically takes a year and finally someone will pay that price.🤷♂️ But what is best place to sell if I just want to make Alittle money and get it out
Sorry about that, I think I was editing the description and I accidentally deleted the link! Here you go. :) landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/i8f6k2
Hi Marissa! Clicked on the link, followed the directions to sign up with my email and opt in to receive the newsletter, but no email arrived. Checked spam...
I can't seem to find the check list you emailed me. Lots of other links.. I am totally new... things from new car parts (old inventory) to antiques. small and large.
That depends on how you value your time. How much time does it take you to stage and take photos? How much time do you spend on creating the listing? How much time do you spend on packing up and sending off the item?
Hi, I did declutter and have a lot of clothes, shoes and bags italian style and medium high quality. Brands. ( I am living in Italy) Where would you sell this? There are a lot of items, I would sell them not singolari (don’t have time to put it online one to one) Thank you Karin
It definitely takes time, you might want to set a price limit, like research before hand and see if it’s worth your time, and if it’s less than $50 just donate👏
What's the minimum prize that makes an item worth selling for you? I have a lot of small items which are not worth much. And I can't sell them in a physical setting

I have two recliners that I really need to sell to get my car in the garage. I used Craigslist and got scammed for serious cash. I was a fool but learned a valuable lesson. I am really gun shy about selling stuff now.

Treasure hunters, take note. If anyone has or finds old, very worn and flat rubber soccer balls at any estate sales/garage sales/yard sales let me know. I'm looking for late 1960s, 1970s full size rubber soccer balls that were used in soccer games during that time period. Many, if found today, would be very worn, beat up and flat. This is OK by me! I would pay anywhere from $100 up to $500 for some of the oldest, most worn rubber soccer balls that could be found. The big issue is dry rot unfortunately. If the ball is hard, stiff, firm, dry cracking, peeling, flaking, then it has dry rot. If it very soft and mushy when flat, then it does NOT have dry rot.
It’s all about how you pack, I would save bubble wrap from any packages, get them from my neighbors, or free from the store, and wrap them really good in bubble wrap, and then use painters tape to tape them all together - here are places to find free shipping supplies: www.squirrelsofafeather.com/free-shipping-supplies/
I sell dished on ebay regularly. Bubble wrap, foam wrapping, Styrofoam and double boxing. You have to pack like someone is going to play football with your package!
I'm the type of person that buys clothes and bags and shoes and then nevet wears them.😢 I've held onto them for so long that I no longer fit in any of it because I'm pregnant 😅
I recently changed style, and also plan to loose the extra weight. I feel bad to donate almost all my clothes, and then spend to buy new ones. I want to buy the new clothes by selling the old ones. I noticed that clothes don't really sell on facebook marketplace. Also, I'm in Greece, so buying used clothes is not a thing here. Stores don't accept old clothes. I can't do a yard sale or set up a bench in an open market, it's illegal. I need tips on how to sell clothes and where, please!
I have things to declutter, but it’s either “stuff” or it’s valuable stuff. I have a huge pile by my front door right now that’s the “garage sale” pile for next spring. But at a garage sale, people are going to want to pay .50 cents for things that should go for $2 or $5 or even $10. So I put the more worthwhile (people might want. want.) on marketplace and either people are GREAT and appreciative and pay and pick up. Or they’re rude and keep trying to dicker me down to $100 for an $800 desk. That’s when it gets demoralizing. Because I can just see it getting harder and harder to offload certain things that I know are valuable, know people want, but know they’re too cheap to pay for. The clothes are either garage sale $2 and I’m happy with that, or Poshmark $20-$100 for cashmere/silk/wool and no way in hell I’m putting it in a garage sale. But then there’s photographing, SEO, packaging, mailing. Ugh. I actually came to TH-cam today searching “how to reconcile yourself to throwing items away instead of selling” to try to get my mind to let me just go dump it all off somewhere so I can stop worrying about it. Took 3 Iranian silk kilims to consignment at a shop 2 hours away, and not one bite on them even though they’re really nice. I don’t get it. People are either blowing money on garbage, or trying to talk you down on high value items. Weird.
I list for what I want on e- Bay. I only need one buyer. People search differently so sometimes there is not much competition. I don't need to relist,, or haggle... Inflation has been so high that I increased prices substantially and sold more. It is still a lot of work for little return, but I clear sentimental items and those yhat would otherwise become landfill. A lid to a popular Tupperware product from the 80s, a cord to a vintage popular game 😆. Best regards!
In the past, I typically didn't do so well in garage sales due to lack of interest. People forget about it, or not suitable to their schedule, inclimate weather, or distance. Once I paid $18 for a newspaper ad and sold $15 worth of merchandise. Unless you make it like a block or town party of everyone doing it together. Online reaches a broader audience, and has a wider scale of options.
Where can I open a STORE. FB has me blocked , I have used do not know why? 77 & retired with STUFF 😊 Want to sell cameras and darkroom supplies, power tools, used phones and more ?
You are NOT useless!!! It takes time to learn the nuances of selling for a good return. I used to donate to charity and take a tax deduction that was substantial. Sometimes the tax write off is best.

Hi can you please do a video on how to sell used/new books online please?! Got tons! New subscriber and loving your channel!! Thanks again
We found that the resale value on second-hand books is usually pretty low, and now just find the free Little Libraries around the city to put used books into.
Check out the book buy back apps like book scooter app.
Great tips! I am just getting started & appreciate your insight.
Definitely makes sense what you're talking about and I have sold things in the past on Facebook marketplace with good wording and good pictures.
Thank ypu so much for the Ebay tip! I will start selling right away. 🙂
That is a myth lol..
There are regular people that make 6 and 7 figures selling online. You just have to put in the wfgort.
Sorry about my typing skills! I meant put in the work.
A great reason to avoid buying crap in the future ! It's resale value is like 10% of original price
We really need to sell are stuff we are struggling with money this really helped
Great advice. Thank you
Very useful tips. Thanks you so much. They were useful even for my brand of beauty products.
I so want to learn to sell clutter. A little nervous about the UPS strike.
Keep watching your videos. Can you make a video how you deal with your kids’ stuff like toys, drawings and other children’s projects?
My mom kept all of that abd then had each kid go through and keep what was important to THEM. 5 boxes per kid went down to one. She also made t-shirt quilts from all the summer camps, sports, etc.
Sounds like I need to get motivated and clean up my clutter.....
I tried this years ago and it takes so long for things to sell that I ended up just throwing away or donating. Certain rare items takes too long to sell. So, if you want to get rid of it fast selling won't do it.
I signed up for skill share with your link. Thanks bunches 😊
Have fun! 🙌
Great video. I started declutering in 2015. I posted all my items in apps. Very helpful.
I heard having a white sheet, background or wall puts it higher in the google searches
I can never understand what the hell to do when it comes to selling items online
Such ad the labeling part on a box?
Pennies to a few dollars in my piggy bank? lol
I’m looking for new selling Platforms that is free to use.
Any tips?
I’ve sold several things on both Craigslist and FB marketplace and if I have a valued high item and want this price, it typically takes a year and finally someone will pay that price.🤷♂️ But what is best place to sell if I just want to make Alittle money and get it out
Hello Marissa! In your video you mention making available a 5 page decluttering checklist. Where can the link to this checklist be found? Thank you!
Sorry about that, I think I was editing the description and I accidentally deleted the link! Here you go. :) landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/i8f6k2
Thank you, Marissa!!!

Tips for someone who has a lot of makeup and crafting items, but I am moving cross country in just my sedan.
I always tell them it will cost extra for shipping. I always get paid before shipping.
Great tips. Thank you!
I can't seem to find the check list you emailed me. Lots of other links.. I am totally new... things from new car parts (old inventory) to antiques. small and large.
Can you list the websites that you think would be good? I too have a lot of clutter. This will be my first time. So I wanted a reliable website.
Yeah, I work in a thrift store and we are constantly overloaded with junk and other stuff.
My question is - was it worth the time invested
Is there a minimum profit you’d use as a guideline cut off for selling an item online?
That depends on how you value your time. How much time does it take you to stage and take photos? How much time do you spend on creating the listing? How much time do you spend on packing up and sending off the item?
Hi, I did declutter and have a lot of clothes, shoes and bags italian style and medium high quality. Brands. ( I am living in Italy) Where would you sell this? There are a lot of items, I would sell them not singolari (don’t have time to put it online one to one) Thank you Karin
Shoes and bags sell well in the USA. Italian would be a top choice for me.
All this makes me lazy, taking pictures of everything and being disappointed if they don’t sell, I have just thrown it out or donating it 😩
It definitely takes time, you might want to set a price limit, like research before hand and see if it’s worth your time, and if it’s less than $50 just donate👏
I really want to know how you almost got arrested in Germany. Might be visiting soon. Thanks for this great info--you are inspiring me to trim down.
I found some vintage dolls that are worth a decent amount.
Nice find! 💰
What's the minimum prize that makes an item worth selling for you? I have a lot of small items which are not worth much. And I can't sell them in a physical setting
For me, if it’s under $10 I donate it.
Factor in your time too. Typing back-and-forth, finding a shipping for the product or meeting up with people etc.
I try to group things together so it is $20. That is an easy amount of money where people have cash.
What does opening a store entail? Is this difficult?
What if you don't have space to store your "to sell" stuff?
Exactly I had to get a storage but it is expensive to keep
Can one sell poster size pics in brass frames that have been professionally framed?
I can't get the password to log in to the link for the Decluttering checklist.

What do you mean open a store?
So how many hours did you spend and how did you deal with the cost of Postage?
I wrote more about those topics here: www.squirrelsofafeather.com/how-to-sell-on-ebay/
I have two recliners that I really need to sell to get my car in the garage. I used Craigslist and got scammed for serious cash. I was a fool but learned a valuable lesson. I am really gun shy about selling stuff now.
Do you mind sharing the scam? You might help someone else here! They tried to get my sister on Facebook Marketplace and I did a video on that scam here: th-cam.com/video/c-0zL0JXj1k/w-d-xo.html
Thank You!
Like like like!!!!💕💕💕💕💪🏼💪🏼
Thank you for the volume of great tips!!
Thank you! I hope to do more videos on this topic again, soon. 🙌
Where are all the links?
How much did you sell your lady vase for?
I still have it and it was worth around $400 when the video was made 😉
Did you have to pay taxes on the items you sold?
You can earn up to $50,000?
will I be taxed for selling my own stuff? im uk.
Only if you made a profit off it
Well my clutter is too crappy to sell on eBay with all the fees.
Community garage sale. Find one that donates everything to a set place after the fact, so you dont come home with everything
I wanna move to Europe do you talk abt that
My question is how do you sell clutter that is very fragile? For example China, dishes, and items that can easily break in the mail?
It’s all about how you pack, I would save bubble wrap from any packages, get them from my neighbors, or free from the store, and wrap them really good in bubble wrap, and then use painters tape to tape them all together - here are places to find free shipping supplies: www.squirrelsofafeather.com/free-shipping-supplies/
@@AtoZenLife thank you so much.
I sell dished on ebay regularly. Bubble wrap, foam wrapping, Styrofoam and double boxing. You have to pack like someone is going to play football with your package!
My post office has great personnel that offer the best advice.
I've declutterrd so much still got junk
I'm the type of person that buys clothes and bags and shoes and then nevet wears them.😢 I've held onto them for so long that I no longer fit in any of it because I'm pregnant 😅
"Pet-Free, Smoke Free Home" 🤓
I recently changed style, and also plan to loose the extra weight. I feel bad to donate almost all my clothes, and then spend to buy new ones. I want to buy the new clothes by selling the old ones. I noticed that clothes don't really sell on facebook marketplace. Also, I'm in Greece, so buying used clothes is not a thing here. Stores don't accept old clothes. I can't do a yard sale or set up a bench in an open market, it's illegal. I need tips on how to sell clothes and where, please!
Try eBay, Mercari, Poshmark, Offerup, or depop. They're all pretty easy!
I started depop, let's cross fingers it goes well. I 'd appreciate a video with tips
Doesn't look like an option for ypu since you said no one buys uses clothes in Greece.
@@y.peffle2802 I tried depop but it's a lot of time spent with very few money made
Who here sells things they got for free?! :)
Sure, why not. People give things specifically for me to sell and they don't charge me anything.
For me It is difficult to sell so ı mostly donate in İstanbul
I don't see the checklist
Sorry, Jef, I was updating things and must have deleted it - here it is! landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/i8f6k2
Made 2k on mercari in last few months
How do you feel about garage sales?
In the past, I typically didn't do so well in garage sales due to lack of interest. People forget about it, or not suitable to their schedule, inclimate weather, or distance. Once I paid $18 for a newspaper ad and sold $15 worth of merchandise. Unless you make it like a block or town party of everyone doing it together. Online reaches a broader audience, and has a wider scale of options.
@@thewayofthewell4547 thanks for your response!

Have you heard of a Virtual Yard Sale??

I've never made a penny I'm useless I've donated so much stuff and never sold one thing I'm single parent and watching this too get tips
You are NOT useless!!! It takes time to learn the nuances of selling for a good return. I used to donate to charity and take a tax deduction that was substantial. Sometimes the tax write off is best.
