She's just below Dr. Fate and John Constantine which, considering one is a Lord of Order and the other conned three demon lords into buying his soul only to trick Lucifer into giving it back to avoid a three way civil war in Hell, is hugely impressive. Plus, she's waaaaay more reliable than them.
When we see her in Justice League she really has some magic skills

@@mariebourgot4949 Oh, she definitely is, but power comes in many forms. A 7'4" body builder will lose to a 5'5" Wing Chun Master due to a combination of skill, technique, timing, and experience, despite the body builder being far more powerful by the numbers. John Constantine constantly goes up against beings far more powerful than him by the numbers, yet he wins against them or forces a draw 9 times out of 10 out of sheer cunning. Also, he is literally the definition of "ungodly lucky".
Zatanna is a long-standing character in the comics, having been introduced in 1964, though her magic is real, casting spells by speaking the words backwards. She's had her own adventures, guest-starred in other heroes' comics, and been a recurring member of the Justice League. She's an old friend of Batman's in many continuities.
The comics version tends to wear fishnet stockings, a nod to the classic "magician's assistant" look, but those were too fiddly to draw for this version.
She's also a favourite character of Paul Dini, one of the show's creators and writers (who also wrote the first two Arkham games).
Fun fact: Paul Dini is married to Misty Lee, who is in fact a real life stage magician.

Her father Zatara first appeared in Action Comics #1 (1938), the same comic that introduced Superman, and making Zatara older than Batman in order of appearance. It is the most valuable comic in the world.

@@fynnthefox9078 yep it’s more like foreshadowing their eternal war between each other. Instead of something romantic between her and Bruce as zatanna was hoping she was predicting the twisted love/hate obsession of joker and Batman.
Fun fact: They left out her trademark fishnet stockings because it was too hard to animate.
Same for Black Canary in Justice League Unlimited. They gave her grey tights to give at least the impression of her classic fishnets without the hassle of animating all the lines :)
Darn, no reaction for The Man Who Killed Batman? Such an iconic episode. I really hope you do Robin's Reckoning, as well as Birds of a Feather, The Demon's Quest, and Read My Lips. Some of my favorites.
Robin's Reckoning....all day everyday. Every upload seems like a swing....and a bunt. It's not a strike but....how long we been doin this? And the Baby Doll episode? My god....it was made for her.
I’m probably a little biased towards this episode because Zatanna is my favorite female superhero of all time, DC, Marvel, and otherwise. I absolutely love the portrayal of her in this show, and it establishes a precedent for the DCAU of guest-star superheroes that Superman: the Animated Series would follow in season 2. Writer Paul Dini truly understands Zatanna well. You should check out the limited comic book series he wrote in the 2000s. It’s a fun little series!
I also like that you see the bond between Batman and Zatanna. Honestly, I kinda wish the comics would explore their relationship more than the two of them being dear friends. They really do compliment each other well, more so because she is just a fun character overall.
And we’re finally getting to “Robin’s Reckoning” next time. Bring tissues!

But we know what you mean. He doesn’t have a “Lois Lane” in his life; a genuine romantic partner to rely on. He has a bunch of flighty non-commitments which he clearly yearns to have more seriously but can’t abandon his “real” mission to have such a life. It’s sad as hell. :(
But tragedy is beautiful, so… :)
The closest to Lois Lane Bruce has is probably Silver St. Cloud, rich and smart socialite, a Bruce Wayne distaff version...

The ending was very telling Zatina was so sad for Bruce asking him what made you put this on.
And Bruce's answer a painful memory and a promise I think it's safe to say we all felt that.
I like her character. In her earlier portrayals here, she seems to be mostly highly skilled in stage magic having both a magician father and spent her life mastering it. In her later portrayals, she has actual magical powers. (I don’t recall, but I think this was how she was in the comics originally too.)

This is one of my favorite episodes as well, and Zatanna is one of my favorite Batman/DC characters. I love when the episodes focus on a more human and vulnerable Bruce, and as you said, he doesnt have a lot of love interests. Bruce is clearly no James Bond, with the throwaway women. His romance actually have value, and Kevin did such a great job expressing that. Anyway, I think youll love the Robins Reckoning episodes, and I love your channel!
Yeah, you basically just met one of the most powerful humans in the DC universe, If you want more about her I suggest the solo run by Paul Dini and Justice League Dark from 2011
No joke there. Zatanna is one of the few people on earth who could easily beat Superman, thanks to his weakness to magic. She’s so powerful she can recreate the entire DC universe (in the comics only, of course).

I really love how even though he was wearing a mask and disguising his voice Zatanna could still tell she knew Batman from somewhere even if she didn't fully know it was Bruce
The sad thing is that whenever Bruce seriously pursues a woman romantically it usually ends badly for one reason or another. Examples: Selina Kyle, Talia, Andrea Beaumont, Jezebel Jet (African Dictator and Gaslighting Super Bitch), Barbara (Ick). So maybe it's for the best he and Zatanna just stayed friends.
Zatanna is actually a decent person with power, agency and history with him. Probably the best complimentary contrast to him too.
I love how a lot of the B:tAS show How Batman gained a majority of his skills. And the friends he made along the way.
By the time the Superman show came around, amd then Justice League, there was a platform for the characters to come together in an integral universe of stories.
It's really cool how the show was doing this important foundation for shows we all love now.
Fun Fact: Montague Kane looks like Orson Welles and even the last name of Kane was the same last name of the character he played a role in the film of citizen kane.

Detail for Zatanna fans. Her outfit is a classic, like Batman or Superman is based upon a circus strongman or aerialist's costume.
Zatanna wears the standard 'evening dress for a magician' (waist up), and the 'magician's beautiful assistant' (waist down). So she's actually an example of equality that predates many such.
The classic original outfit for 'mystery men' was formal evening dress (like a stage magician), and can be seen worn by most of the earliest comic-book heroes.
The Shadow, Operator X-5, The Spider, and the later Phantom Stranger all wore versions of this. Even the first true comic-book superhero, the gadget-using masked evening dress guy 'The Crimson Avenger' wore a red version of this, with a 'domino mask', typical wear to evening masked balls.
Batman's large black cape is a call-back to this, but he's wearing a cowl, which he was almost the first to wear such.
The Batman Animated series was set in 'the first half of the twentieth century' but with computers and TV in black and white. Glad to see they went with classic appearances for the heroes and the villains.
By the way, Zatanna uses many stage magic tricks, and the psychological techniques that go with them, but she also does 'real' magic, signalled by her speaking backwards, so if the words can be understood when read backwards, 'real' magic.
Abra cadabra is faux-Arabic, meaning something like 'algebra-algebra' (worth looking it up). The middle-eastern fakir was a standard form of stage magic back then.

The animated series artist, Paul Dini liked the comics character of Zatanna so much that he married a stage magician. The character in the cartoon here is modeled after his wife.

Man Batman's got the best girlfriends... Talia, Selina, Zatanna, heck he even charmed Harley.
At this point I don't think they'd decided if the DCAU would feature real magic, hence why she's portrayed as a conventional magician here. But just wait until her Justice League appearence.
In the wider DC canon, Zatanna and John Constantine have been in a relationship, even having a child at one point. Which is somewhat fitting, both of them having actual magical powers. But Constantine is more than a little bit of a mess most of the time. Not always the healthiest person to be around.

It's so disappointing that they make Zatanna out to just be an average magician, it'd be like if they had an episode with Superman and he was just a tough guy who shot himself out of a cannon.
She gains actual magic later on in this universe by the time of Justice League Unlimited
