Yes I was confused by her strange elephant denial. They’re one of the most intelligent animals on the planet and definitely can do things like hug you with their trunks.
In the comics, Dick's origin story also ties into Tim Drake's origin as the third Robin. Tim was in the audience on the night the Flying Graysons were killed, and saw them perform before their deaths. Years later, he saw Robin perform a quadruple somersault, an acrobatic move that very few people could perform... the Flying Graysons amongst them. He put two and two together, and concluded that Robin must be Dick Grayson, and from there, deduced that Bruce Wayne - Dick's guardian - was Batman. After Jason's death, Batman became noticeably more brutal and aggressive, and was no longer accompanied by Robin (obviously). So, Tim tracked down Dick Grayson - at this point going by Nightwing - and begged him to go back to being Robin, because Batman needs Robin to keep him from slipping too far into the darkness. Dick refused - he'd outgrown that role, and was very much his own hero now - but he suggested that _Tim_ become Robin instead. It took Bruce _a lot_ of convincing to let someone else take those risks, but after extensive training and testing, Bruce finally relented... and Tim became the third Robin. And, where Dick and Jason had never really gotten along, Dick and Tim developed a sort of big brother/little brother dynamic.
Tim has an interesting story leading up to his time as Robin and growing so much as Robin and pre-New52 Red Robin. It still bothers me that DC still needs to show him the respect his character deserves. Just because he had parents doesn't mean he didn't have trauma. His parents were wealthy but crazy neglectful, and this could be used as a lesson on found families, and the impact neglect can have on a person's mental state. As well as Tim's intense (and stalkerish) obsession with Nightwing during his early years.
I Love Dick and Bruce's relationship, they are one of the best examples of father-son relationship in comics and the goods and the bads Bruce didn't know how to be a father to Dick, and he saw himself so much on him that he trained Dick as Robin to make sure Dick wouldn't turn into a "Batman" himself They have great moments in the comics when Bruce is depressed and Dick helps him, or even the reverse where Bruce's affects Dick in a negative way because of his toxic upbringing as a person At the same time that Dick can be this wholesome person, he can also be just as dark as Bruce and that's really interesting to be, because even if Dick never wanted to be like Batman, or Batman never wanted Dick to be like him Of all the Robin's, Dick is the one who's just has a "Batman" aura, for better or worse

The transition between Robin and Nightwing in the DCAU happened in a mini-series of comics, The Batman Adventures: The Lost Years. Some of the material did show up in the show, in flashbacks in the episode Old Wounds. Otherwise, this is actually a pretty comics-accurate retelling of Robin's origin story, except that Batman and Robin actually caught Zucco almost immediately, when Dick was still a kid. It was only a 16 page story in the original comics. Yes, Bruce has a lot of anger about what happened to Dick, because of the similarity to his own origin story. (The reason he never formally adopted Dick is... basically because of an old-fashioned judge who didn't want a single man to adopt a 10-year old. Eventually, that finally did change in the comics, but for decades, Dick Grayson was Bruce Wayne's ward, and heir to his fortune). Fun Fact that I recently became aware of: the working name of Batman's potential kid sidekick was originally Mercury the Boy Wonder before it was changed in the end to Robin the Boy Wonder.
Comics being comics: Dick was a ward until adulthood where he was legally and formally adopted (as more of a loving gesture) Jason (the second) was formally and legally adopted from the jump Tim had a dad and stepmom who both were around when he was Robin, but were both killed, and Bruce adopted him. Damian is Bruce's biological son so don’t have to adopt him.
And finally we’re at the episode that won this show the Emmy award for Outstanding Animated Program, a feat nearly unthinkable considering it was up against the greatest animated show of all time, “The Simpsons”, at its prime. But that just shows how top notch the writing, animation, voice acting, direction, and music were in this story. “Robin’s Reckoning” is why I think Dick Grayson is the greatest Robin of all time. Like Bruce, Dick was shaped by tragedy, but unlike his mentor, he had someone he could relate to and share his pain. I believe Dick, more so than Bruce, uses his tragic backstory to fight for justice and be the Boy Wonder because it’s a choice he makes on his own. He doesn’t let the tragedy overwhelm him the way Bruce does; rather, he builds upon it and becomes the superhero he is. And look how special Bruce and Dick’s bond is in this episode. Bruce knows how much this means to Dick, but like any good parental figure, he doesn’t want to see him fall and become lesser. But Dick had an amazing guardian and learned how to let his passion for justice overcome his personal anger. These episodes are simply stellar all around!

Depending on the origin, (but also here), Dick is a ward of the state; when Zucco killed his parents, Dick was placed with Bruce under a sort of witness protection. I think he *eventually* adopts him in the comics, but he’s also never explicitly been stated to be his son.

RE: Adoption. I don't think Bruce ever adopts Dick formally in the animated series. He is always his 'ward'; Bruce became his legal guardian but their relationship has for most of the time been 'partners' in crime-fighting. It makes sense to me, Dick being the first Robin, that Bruce doesn't think necessarilly to step into the role as father with all formality, hedging as 'friend' and 'partner'. But anyone with eyes can see in every incarnation that this is a wounded father and a wounded son. In the comics, Dick is formally adopted by Bruce well after childhood; in his mid twenties or so, when both Bruce and Dick have matured considerably and, perhaps, their parent/child wounds are not so raw that they can look the obvious in the face - they are father and son. P.S. In various reboots in the comics, they undo and redo this. But the general standard is "Dick remains Bruce's Ward until young adulthood". Edit: Oh also, great reaction, etc etc. :D You know through the Arkham games that Batman's lore grows to recruit a large 'bat family' but Bruce and Dick is without a doubt the fan favorite dynamic duo of all time. All later Robins are compared to his standard. At the risk of overselling it, it's a privilege, as a 90's kid who grew up on the DCAU with Dick as the kid sidekick there for me to identify with, to see him 'grow up' in various media along side us. Since then, he's become a much adored hero in his own right - but you'll see that when you get around to some of the other animation properties if you decide to, like Teen Titans and Young Justice. Edit Edit: It occurs to me belatedly that some of the reason for this adoption delay might be because Bruce grew up with an informal father in Alfred - a man who was technically his employee but who is so instrumental in his life and so dear to him that you can see the father-son bond rise to the surface whenever either one of them is seriously threatened. Perhaps Bruce has coped with his trauma somewhat by isolating the title of 'Father' with the loss of his biological father Thomas Wayne; but allowing himself to be fathered, and to be a father in turn, in all respects except in that painful formality.

14:54 In some countries it's considered perfectly normal for kids to go around unescorted. In Japan kids might take a train to school several cities away from where they live, and no one bats an eye. Heck, I live in the US, and when I was a kid I walked into downtown all the time.
In the early comics (The eighties and Nineties, I believe), Dick's situation got terrible between the time his parents were killed, and Bruce took him in; he couldn't officially adopt him because he was an unmarried bachelor and had to bribe a lot to just take him in. There wasn't room for him in foster care, so he ended up in juvie and, after running away, was abducted and nearly assaulted before Batman saved him. Dick was later officially adopted (in some comics, as an adult) but never changed his last name or anything because he wanted to respect and hold on to his parent's memory and roots. His canonically second-generation Romanian, but I don't know if they revamped it again.
This version of Batman and Robin’s dynamic makes me so sad that it takes the turn it does when Dick becomes Nightwing. Bruce quite literally is his foster father and they keep each other out of that dark pit of vengeance that could easily consume them both. And they are an incredible team.
I watched this after school..I swear that cartoons were the best around that time, peaked. Fantastic show. When I think of Batman, this is what I think of. The movies..well they're their own thing.
Adoption Question: in some Universes Bruce does adopt Dick as an Adopted Son, others he is a Ward so not officially adopted but just lives with Bruce but I don't know which is the case for the Cartoon here (although it seems like it might be the 2nd)
Meg, Bruce was a young bachelor and a man with practically infinite wealth and social standing. He also had a rather distasteful reputation for reckless behavior and philandering. It's a testament to Gotham's apathetic corruption that Bruce got to adopt Dick at all.
In the comics, he was a ward until strangely, he was formally and legally adopted as a adult. But retcons sometimes place it as Bruce adopting him as a kid. But yes he is adopted. Bruce has like legally adopted at least 4 kids.
@@gunnerdobbins3129 Jason and Tim were adopted as teens, as well as Cassandra Cain eventually (despite both her parents actually being alive). So that's at least 3 + Damian
@@Rocket1377 Language changes. In the time period Robin was introduced, "ward" was used to describe anyone whose care you were responsible for. Batman comics have continued to use it that way because Bruce had a very formal, dated upbringing
I love that while Bruce taught Dick everything he knows, he also did everything he could to keep from turning out like himself. He *wants* Dick to have a healthy personal life and turn out better than he did. That being said, my only real gripe with Robin's Reckoning is how close Zucco gets to taking out Batman due to sheer dumb luck.
The ending speech with Batman is a bit of a problem. He says how he was afraid Robin would be killed if he took on Zucco..... an ordinary gangster, and yet has no problem with Robin taking on the Joker, Scarecrow, The Riddler, Mr. Freeze.... etc. If I would have written it, I'd have written it like this: Robin: You were right, I shouldn't have been on this case. I lost control of my emotions. Batman: It's okay, Dick. I only felt I should try to disaued you from this so you would be spared having to leak this lesson this way. Robin: What do you mean? Batman: When I first became the Dark Knight, I sought out the man who... took my parents. I was filled with anger, wanting nothing more than to take out the years of torment on this man. When I did, I heard a line my father told me. And so I resisted, and let go. But for days I fought with the idea that given up too easily, and should I have done what I intended? Eventually I saw that it was the right thing to do, that I could live with letting it go, but I couldn't live with myself for sinking to his depraved level. I thought a lesson like that would be too much to put you through. This shows Batman as really seeing Dick as his son almost and he'll trust this deep revelation with someone he's known only so long that as compared to Alfred's trust is hard to compare to. Now Robin falls within Bruces inner circle and how much he cares.
8:30 I'm curious why he didn't use his nickname "Matches" Malone. It's the name he uses when he infiltrates inside gangs. But to be true Batman is the jerkiest jerk of all jerks. He had to let the boy have a chance. Not letting him deal with that anger problem and trusting Dick is the reason why Nightwing exists. Dick didn't leave Batman and the Robin mantle because he was too old to be Robin, he left because he had enough of Bruce's schemes. Because Dick Grayson is Robin but Batman is the real dick.
Hey Meg, Just watched this and i liked it I've seen several years ago but haven't seen it in awhile i used to watch it on FOX but Dick Grayson's origin has told many times in comic books but have a good week, Take Care Meg 😎
I think this show did the best Dick Greyson Robin. I belived more that a teen could be next to Batman then a young kid. He is fun, capable most of the time and got his own thing going. I never understod some people with a hate for the Robin character if they saw this show.
Glad you enjoyed this episode. I love Dick Grayson, he is the next person who should be Batman when Bruce is done (although I’m not opposed to what happens in Batman Beyond). Jason Todd is Batman’s greatest failure because he got him killed and when he came back he took all of Batman’s lessons and twisted them into something more sinister. Dick Grayson is Batman’s greatest success, because he takes the lessons that he learned from Batman and makes them better. Have a nice day!
I love how in the flashbacks Batman is in his Year One suit, showing that he's still in his early years.

You should really watch Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
I can’t remember if he adopted him, but I do know Bruce sees Dick as his son.
Meg, Bruce was a young bachelor and a man with practically infinite wealth and social standing. He also had a rather distasteful reputation for reckless behavior and philandering. It's a testament to Gotham's apathetic corruption that Bruce got to adopt Dick at all.
It seems Dick was never formally adopted. He was always called Bruce's "ward", so I guess Bruce was just a legal guardian.
A ward IS a legal guardian.
@@JBWinter Yeah, but Cassandra's parents are international assassins, so not exactly respectable members of society.
@@Rocket1377 Language changes. In the time period Robin was introduced, "ward" was used to describe anyone whose care you were responsible for. Batman comics have continued to use it that way because Bruce had a very formal, dated upbringing
Dick is Bruce's ward. Like how Bruce is Alfred Ward.
Fact: tony zucco was voice by biff tannen himself tom f. wilson.
I have a great flying Grayson's poster
Your light in the back was almost syncing to you while you were talking
Hey Meg,
Just watched this and i liked it
I've seen several years ago but
haven't seen it in awhile i used to
watch it on FOX but Dick Grayson's
origin has told many times in comic
books but have a good week,
Take Care Meg 😎
The Oath in the dark is one of the most iconic moments in comic history. I highly recommend you read it.
Meg, please keep in mind that the stories on which these were based were written during the Depression and around World War II.
Elephants are super smart, don't forget.
I think this show did the best Dick Greyson Robin. I belived more that a teen could be next to Batman then a young kid. He is fun, capable most of the time and got his own thing going. I never understod some people with a hate for the Robin character if they saw this show.
I think he has adopted all the Robin but he doesn’t demand to be called Dad. They just call him by his name or when in uniform Batman.
When batman mask of phantasan?
After I finish BTAS Season 1. So about 10 more episodes :)
And who's that voicing Tony Zucco? Why it's none other than Tom F. Wilson of Biff Tannen fame!
"Hey, butthead, say hi to your mom for me!"
Yeah Dick was adopted
Bruce made Dick his ward. And he was Dick’s guardian.
Tony Zico is, was responsible for the death of Dick’s parents
I'm sorry that you went through trauma
Can both of you react to Anime House by RDCWorld1?
I hope Expanse season 2 is happening. 🤔
Jason Todd was the first Robin
Gotham City in new New Jersey
Glad you dress like a lady. Nice to see a classical beauty like you. ❤
Kevin coney
please react son of batman
Glad you enjoyed this episode. I love Dick Grayson, he is the next person who should be Batman when Bruce is done (although I’m not opposed to what happens in Batman Beyond). Jason Todd is Batman’s greatest failure because he got him killed and when he came back he took all of Batman’s lessons and twisted them into something more sinister. Dick Grayson is Batman’s greatest success, because he takes the lessons that he learned from Batman and makes them better. Have a nice day!
