I taught for 40 years. I learned early on that forming a question or directions so as to get the response you want is blazingly difficult. While grading papers, you must be ready to judge every answer on its own merits, accepting answers which are true but far from what you expected. Creative thinking is to be encouraged.
It really irritates me when teachers mark a kid down for giving a logically valid answer to questions that were just badly designed. How did giraffes' necks get so long? They just didn't - giraffes' necks have always been long; their short-necked ancestors weren't giraffes.
I wrote a final History exam in Grade 11. The exam was made up of 10 or 11 questions essay questions. Each of the questions followed each other chronologically. The first question I totally bullsh***d and my answer had absolutely nothing to do with the question. Second question, same thing. Same pattern down to the 10th question. The Eleventh question I answered as follows, "in order to be able to answer this question I would have to know the answers to the previous 10 questions which obviously I don't. IN other words, I don't know" I got an 86 for this exam. Crazy huh?

In the test "Circle the smallest number," the teacher is wrong. You can't have the SMALLEST of two things; it should be "Circle the SMALLER number."
1:13 Stupidest thing is, I'd have to give credit for that. Because that smartass of an answer is a very real risk on a test!
