I went to a Nina Hagen Band concert in Copenhagen in about 1978, and it was her first tour just after she had been kicked out of the GDR. I was about 16 years old at the time, and it was my first major punk gig (first of many). She simply blew me away "Die Kønigin von Pank", and I got to see her again later in the 80`ties when she was performing on the big stage at the Roskilede Festival in Denmark. She managed to be thrown out of both the GDR Opera School and the GDR actors school, before her stepfather, Wolf Biermann, took her with him to West Germany, and here she unfolded as the fantastic and anarchistic artists she is. They really wanted to make an opera singer out of her in the GDR, because her voice apparently can go one or half an octav higher than most sopranos are able to, and she can sing opera. I`ve seen her sing straight forward opera or chritsmas carols on German national TV, but usually she really likes to take the piss on the songs she is singing and suddenly make burping or vomiting sounds, which probably didn`t go down so well in the GDR. Not long ago she turned 65 and ARD, the German national TV made a documentary about her. She is really loved in Germany and has done everything from punk to cabaret. Her big idol as a singer is the swedish born singer Sarah Leander, who also had a magnificent voice though a bit lower than Nina, but she sounds very much like her, when she sings in low key.
No… I listened to her first concert in some basement club in West-Berlin, I don't even remember the name of… Please, don't destroy my illusion. She then even told us, it was her first concert in the West… 😆
That's actually the studio audio that someone had the sad idea of putting instead of the sound of the live performance. At this time in her life, her live performances were much more interesting than the studio ones.
so fun to see a new generations reaction to Nina Hagen . I have seen her over 30 times throughput the decades , she is STILL going strong . Hard to recommend one song , its like telling someone to listen to one song to know what Jazz is . Decades career . Cheers
You guys should definately google her. Read about her on Wikipedia. Quite a story. I first heard of her back in '78 at the time of her first album release, simply named "Nina Hagen Band". Awesome album. In my oppinion her best. She's classicly opera trained which clearly shows on several songs, this one included. Banned in several countries for her outragous performance back in the days. Please react to "Auf'm Friedhof" from her first album. Or/and "African Reggae" from her second album "Unbehagen". You wont regret it :) Cheers from Denmark :)
The best thing I remember was when she was invited to an austrian talkshow in the late 70s and showed how women masturbate. I mean, everybody knew but it was quite a shocker showing it on TV at prime time. I think it would be still the same reaction today.
I'm so glad you guys covered this...her Mum was a famous opera diva and Nina is as well...mezzo soprano. There is a video of the 2 of them singing from the opera Carmen, I think. I remember her as a kid when mtv had all the weird European bands.
Thank you for this!!! Now you neid the candy : "Ich weiß es wird nochmal ein Wunder geschehen"! I've seen her live in Münster/Germany. It was crazy and amazeing!!!
Nina has a new release called Unity. Again, she shows off her vocal range like she hasn't done in decades. I saw her live back in the mid 80's at the Beacon theater in NYC. Here we were in the middle of a very classy part of New York on upper Broadway, and the crowd inside the theater was filled with safety pin punkers with all different colors of hair. I was from suburban CT and probably looked like the biggest geek there. But Nina was incredible. She comes floating out onstage on a UFO singing opera, then the guitars exploded and it was all punk going forward. I'd never seen anything like it. I brought some girls from work with me, and they loved her.
Saw Nina in 1994 at the Phoenix and 2004 at Lee's Palace in Toronto...stellar! Met her both times. The sweetest loveliest person and so funny which isn't surprising since there's so much humour in her songs!
Oh yes, she's so lovely ❤ Saw her in 2012 in concert in a church in Leipzig (Germany) with a Jazz Band. She played the guitar and sang with such a deep voice, it was fantastic. And after the concert she sats down at the altar and chats with every fan for some minutes. I think, if her security didn't interupt her after a while, we would still sit there today 😅. She one of the tiniest and sweetest women i've ever met. I love her 💕
Just came across your channel. I have loved Nina Hagen for 30 years and am so excited to see you discovering her. I recommend Demolition Man by Grace Jones
I've seen her live in 1986 at an open air festival near Munich, Germany. She got into a shouting match with some bikers who were hired as security. She won.
I''ve seen Nina live in (West-)Berlin shortly after she released her first album in the then West… I don't even remember in which club it was, but the concert was quite wild ;)
YASSSSSSS! I love Nina, we partied to her music all through the early 80's. So crazy, so far ahead of her time--actually, it still hasn't' arrived. She communes with flying saucers, sings about veganism, reinvents herself constantly, once shocked a talk show host by undressing to make a point about sex education.
I love your reaction to the amazing Nina! I've been a fan of Nina since 1980. Check out the German version of this song. I also highly recommend ,, Der Wind Hat Mir ein Lied Erzählt".
DIR EN GREY’s Kaoru is a big fan. I have one of their self-published periodical magazines [circa 2001] from Japan where each member expresses themselves. There’s a picture of Nina Hagen’s “Return Of The Mother” album on Kaoru’s page.
Thanks a lot for both of you. Suzi, I really like your open impressions about Nina. Thank you for your open heart. Lovely Greatings from Germany. Please more of you both.
There are three famous women with the name Hagen in Germany. Nina's mother Eva-Maria was a well-known actress in East Germany at the time the country was divided. Nina's very pretty daughter Kosma is also a well-known actress in Germany.
Omg did you already reacted to her song "du hast den farbfilm vergessen" my fav song from her 😍 would be great that you react to it. Greeting from austria/europe
Angela Merkel was allowed to wish for 3 songs at her official farewell from office at a "Great Tattoo", like every outgoing chancellor, which were then played by a music military corps in front of a large backdrop and lined up soldiers of all branches of the armed forces. One of the titles was : "Ich hab den Farbfilm vergessen" by Nina Hagen, which was a rare challenge for the military musicians 😂 !
Nina Hagen is legendary, you should check al her other work, she is traditionally an high skilled opera singer but also a highly talented rock star. Controversy all-over in her shows, text and performance…thx for bringing her back in the picture !
What I also really appreciate, in addition to her great talent, is that she radiates absolute naturalness behind all her make-up and grimaces. As if she is showing her innermost self on the outside. She doesn't seem to care at all about being beautiful and hot. She has the courage to be uncomfortable, in a way that was not and is not usual in the past and is not usual today. I think that is something very special. Because everyone stops themselves from acting wrongly. She doesn't seem to be afraid of that.
sorry late but you didn't pop up on my searches for reactions to my favorite 80's bands until today... You need to see and react to her David Letterman interview from back in the day! She was flogging her song... Prima Nina In Ekstasy & Universal Radio She is a trip!!! PS. You would rock that makeup You should here her do My Way! The Queen Of Funk Punk!
Hi guys, I'm very happy you liked NINI, please watch her official video for Smack Jack, from her best album (82), Nunsexmonkrock. Unfortunately today Nina lost her voice and she can't sing the way she used to back in the 80's. Nina was loved and hated at that time.
there was a post-punk band from Brazil that did a song to her in 1986 - ("Tokyo - Garota de Berlim") (Girl from berlin), Supla sang the parts in portuguese and she sang on the chorus and the parts in german.
From Argentina I greet you, since I was 54 years old it is very funny to find that your choice of topics is as if I was passing my list of favorites to you. That is why I suggest Nina playing Seemann by Rammstein together with Apocalyptica and also the band "In Extremo". Pay attention to me. Cheers
How have these peeps never heard of Nina Hagen? The quintessential over the top diva of all time. Whatever anyone thinks they did Nina did it first like multicolored hair, extreme eye make up and black lipstick, etc.
I drove people in my dorm crazy with this when it came out -- and I usually blasted the German version. (Btw, the studio version is 20 or 30 seconds longer at the end, and I like that part, too.)
I was 17 years old back in 1983…we all thought we were weird 🎶🤗♥️👍 don’t tell anyone, we had fake ID’s to dance at Hollywood clubs, we looked older than we were
Great Reaction. Wow, Suzy and Traviz already did it. I requested this song long time ago, when the Neanterthals were still wandering through the woods :-) :-) (last week, when Trump still ruled, lol) By the way, if crazy Till Lindemann from Rammstein smells Tina Hagen just a mile away, he runs for his life because Nina Hagen is 100 times crazier than him.

Me too! amazing performer , love her since the first Rock in Rio
Künstlerisch ist Sie eh eine ganz besondere Figur. Aber Sie ist sich immer treu geblieben, hat unangepasst Ihr Ding durchgezogen und nie etwas darauf gegeben was andere über Sie gesagt haben.
And remember circa 1980 ; dying your hair a color other than normal human hair colors ( save old ladies ) was HUGE ... And difficult to get ( actors in divine movies mid-70's took markers apart for blue hair ) nowadays you can get bright colors at walgreens ..
You have to react to another INTERNATIONAL Superstar from Germany, who is sadly already Dead : KLAUS NOMI !...his Vocal Range was Mindblowing (long before Dimash)......check out COLD SONG (Live Version with Orchestra)......
Hi sorry I have not been watching I been watching a new band called jaded star the singer is named maxi nil she kind of reminds me of sis I a little bit because of the sweetness and kindness but maxi is greek I think suzi would really like her her voice is crazy good and has a touch of softness love ya alex ps still dancing like a fool to ur music when the mood hits
I love when new generations discover Nina Hagen for the first time
im mad that i only just realized she existed this year...I found her going through Klaus Nomi's videos I guess since he was also in Opera

wasn't aware of there is a relation between Nina Hagen and Wolf Bierman. Amazing.
Her mother Eva Maria Hagen was an amazing singer and actress too.

Yes. Thanks for pointing that out.
I saw the one with the actual audio. Better in my opinion.
Nina is otherwordly.. she has one of the most unique voices in music
The first concert I ever went to was a Nina Hagen concert. 1988, Nina For President. I've seen her perform live 9 times...and every show was amazing!
Hey, German dude here. I bought this album when it came out. I was 15. Still love it.
She’s amazing! Nina Hagen has a six octave vocal range.
I learned she actually covered all eight octaves…
so fun to see a new generations reaction to Nina Hagen . I have seen her over 30 times throughput the decades , she is STILL going strong . Hard to recommend one song , its like telling someone to listen to one song to know what Jazz is . Decades career . Cheers
that´s the same what i think about...thank you!

She was the cat's ass in the punk/New wave dance scene, way ahead of her time, way ahead of this time. The original version of this song is in German.
The best thing I remember was when she was invited to an austrian talkshow in the late 70s and showed how women masturbate. I mean, everybody knew but it was quite a shocker showing it on TV at prime time. I think it would be still the same reaction today.
I love her vocals. Amazing singer. This song is just so good.

Saw her live at Roskilde Denmark 1985, She did a fantastic cover of My way. What surprised me was how short she was.
