  • Reverend LaVelle Artis was Born in Braddox, Pa. 9/30/45 went home to be with the Lord as being 11/25/22.
LaVelle (Loved) his calling in the Ministry and started Thankful Missionary Baptist Church located at 2411 Gilbert Avenue NE Canton, Ohio 44705 and the joining Parsonage came together. Thankful Missionary had a small membership but that didn’t dampen his outlook on the things accomplished while the Ministry was operating. Thankful Missionary Baptist Church under the guidance of my Husband Reverend Artis started a After School Homework Program. Many children were blessed with better Grades, a Latch Key Program for Safe Housing till their parents could come pick them up after work.
Area College Students received Credits for Tutoring. They all were served a Simple Hot Balanced Meal and Game Activities after Homework & Tutoring was Completed. Several Ministers were established to meet the needs of the surrounding Community that we served:
    Food Give-A-Way.
Clothing, Coats & Shoe Give-A- Way.
    Fundraising Program:
    Whole Cakes & Yard Sales.
    Youth Club:
Over Night Youth Basement Stay w/ Popcorn & Games
    Basketball Night at area Center
    Amusement Parks
    Youth Team Sports Shirt
    Vacation Bible School:
Learning / Hot Meal / Activity.
    Canton Foundation Neighborhood Partnership Classes:
Small Grant for Beautification of Atlantic Blvd. Park and Flower bought incorporated with Planting Instructions demonstrated by (me) to participating Youth and Reverend Artis kept it watered.
    Canton Community Services:
Fines owed could be worked off at Thankful Missionary Baptist Church by assisting Reverend Artis under his Work Service Program from the Courts.
    Library Reading Room:
Books donated by the Public Library to improve the reading Skills of the Youth & Adults that attended the Church and or After School Program.
    Computer Donations:
Computers Donated by Area Bank for After School Homework Program when new ones were purchased for Bank Employees. Adults attending the church were allowed to use the “Computer Room” to familiarize themselves in operating it. Classes were set up to teach the “Basic” skill Computer Operation.
    Grants:
Grants received from Church (5013-C) The Grants Sustained the After School Homework Program during it’s operation.
    Matching Grant:
Received for Handicap Ramp and (2) Wheel Chairs. Reverend Artis was Front and Center on the Project with the Contractors & Volunteers! Electrical work learned quickly and performed continually after observing a Professional Electrician finish up a Service Job. LaVelle learning fast was essential because funds were tight but I was always stressed about him getting Hurt!
    Cooking:
All Meals were cooked at Home and transported to the Church. Only (Meats) were bought (if) we could not cook fast enough due to time frame.
    Jail & Nursing Home Ministry:
Sermon at Jail only done by LaVelle. I was not permitted to attend Jail Sermons for my safety for his liking but (Both) of us attended Nursing Home Service on scheduled Sundays following our Church Service.
    Day Care Program:
Reverend Artis attended Classes for Day Care License and I typed his Homework Papers and was Church Secretary and assisted with everything needed to be done…..
“We made a Great Team but my illness of (Asthma) got in the way of continual progress that could not come fast enough for him because it rested on (LaVelle) to do it because of small Congregation and lack of Tithes & Offerings. The Grants received assisted the payment to keep Church going along with the Rent on the Parsonage next door. Until it had to be re-painted and or repaired because Tenant damaged it! Evictions Burdensome because of (no) payments on time for months & Court papers has to be filed to evict them….He could not carry the Church and the Tenants too!??!
LaVelle tried to give them the time needed and treated everyone fairly. He loved people in general and was easy to talk too and flashed a smile that made you remember his face!
LaVelle served in the Vietnam War received a Purple Heart 💜 being “Wounded In Action” by saving his team members in battle. Orgee medals received as well along with Honorable Discharge.
Church doors closed and Auctioned due to lack of Membership and mounting Bills.
    SERMON GIVEN TEXT: (Psalms 139:1-14)
LaVelle gave this a sermon on 4/28/02 and Titled it: NEVER ALONE!🕊🙏🏼
He was a man with Strong Faith who Loved the Lord and his Fellow Brethern and His WORK was finished and “Well Done”! I believe when Reverend LaVelle Artis exhaled his last Breath….GOD WELCOMED HIM HOME!!!❤️ (🙏🏼📖🕊🕍🙏🏼📖🕊🙏🏼)

So sorry for your loss. I wondered what happened. I lived right behind the church and talked to LaVelle quite a lot! I helped him sometimes when I saw him working at the church or parsonage. I went to the church prior when it was Nazarene. I miss our conversations in my backyard. He would always ask how my parents were with a smile. I remember the carnival that was put on years ago right in front of the church. He did a lot for the neighborhood. People drove by and they'd honk or wave and he did back. I remrmber the pink Cadillac. ❤ He was a very great man. He told me in my back yard because he knew I keep the faith, "Eric, you are a good man." I never forgot that. We had neighborhood watch meetings which he got me into. I am Captain of my area. I do miss him... God Bless you. Wished we could have one more conversation...

      Thank you Eric!!
LaVelle spoke of you often as well to me! (The fact that you found me under an entirely different name you knew nothing of, tells me that “God” lead you to find me to satisfy your nagging concern for LaVelle!)
LaVelle expressed the meaningful conversations you guys had together and it was a joy for him to speak to you and encourage you in the Lord. Eric I thank you very much for your memory recall of the things he did and positive affects he made in the lives of many. He loved the Street Carnivals he always had for the Community directly in front of (Thankful Missionary Baptist Church) and everyone really enjoyed it! LaVelle loved making people laugh and enjoying themselves particularly, the younger children and Teenagers. My husband and I took Classes together for the Neighborhood Leadership Certificates in order to have “Neighborhood Watch Meetings” at the Church. I planted the Flowers and he watered them in “Harmont Park” NE with the grant funding for the Community as well! I taught the children how to plant the Flowers and the photo was put in the Canton Repository Newspaper. Much work and entertainment was put in and he loved every minute of it, looking forward to the next thing he could come up with. Reverend Artis was an “Outstanding Man Of God”! Not many Pastors can hold a candle to the things he accomplished fulfilling his Call as a Church Pastor & Leader. You made me shed tears of joy when I read your post. It solidified that God lead me to do this video to inform the peoples who’s lives, that was touched by Reverend LaVelle Artis, will know what happened to him. I very much Believe “The Rev”, as you guys called him, is Home With The Lord!
Draw closer unto the Lord, read your Scripture, Pray daily and allow God to use you to make a “Positive” difference in the lives of others. A “Positive” affect the way Reverend LaVelle Artis left on yours. God Bless you always❤(🙏🏼💕🕍💕🕊️)

@@lindamayo5347 Thank you!... for making this video. I would truly love to speak to him one more time. He was one who helped me "to keep the Faith". I love the Lord and Jesus Christ and pray everyday to them. One of the last times I was in the church with him on Gilbert, I told him I had never seen the attic. He told me to go up and look into it. I did for the first time in my life and thanked him. I may have met you, but not sure. God Bless and Much Love! Eric
