    "MC-909 is not just a Groovebox. It's a Mixer, MIDI sequencer, song writer, Sampler, DJ gear, Synthesizer, and Synth engine. Plus keyboard. Plus arpeggiator. Plus whatever."
    This series will focus only on the Synth Engine.

    That song stuck in my head is played on a MC-909. Probably one of the coolest instruments ever created by any manufacturer. Keep the videos coming! Always good to see new ideas on something you think you know like the back of your hand.

    Just pulled out mine from 5 years in storage and finally installed the ram upgrade I purchased 3 years ago, took roughly a day or so to get back into the swing of menu diving, but am now working on some of my own patches for the first time ever. So I’d love to know more... keep the vids coming 👍

    Hey Brother, IMPECCABLE series on the 909 synth engine!!!!.... actually close to a 'MasterClass' for synth programming in general - in that you delve into how to **apply** it's architecture's functionality. Scratch-sample technique was a nice surprise. Would be curious on your take on any of these topics next time to jump into synth-tutes:
    1. Effective part/channel setup on multi-timbral synths, what is best & where.
    2. Strategies to get the most of limited FX engines (buses, parallel/series/sendto*) and FX contortion for live/jam use
    3. PCSynth midi project management
    4. Sampling workflow ( by way of: MC-909 input rec | PC input rec, pre-processing, keeping organized )
    You have a gifted way of transmuting highly-technical, "boring AF" technical details into very in-depth, detailed & informative entertainment that is very unique. Your insights in creatively leveraging what's available is invaluable and have a magical spirit & good vibe. Hope the new spot is serving you well & thank you for taking the time to produce such quality content.
    Forums are plastered with negative comments on this unit and one must come to the conclusion that such types simply lack motivation to actually make their own tones - like someone complaining that a dull pencil sux when the sharpener is on the wall next to them.😎

  • @DaveDaves
    @DaveDaves 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Id say the much bigger difference between the XV-5050 and MC-909 is that the 909 can use user-loaded/recorded samples as waveforms wheras XV-5050 is limited to ROM / very expensive SRX cards. These days I pretty much only use my own waveforms for both patches and kits, including Roland D-50 presets which I sampled (each tone individually) & re-made for 909: th-cam.com/video/uV8kEm80pVI/w-d-xo.html

      Im glad u made special mention of the TMT Structures in MC-909, its one of my favorite features of it as well - and they look extremely similar if not identical to the D-50/D-20 structures!

  • @Tomlinsky

    Great stuff! Roland could have done with your enthusiasm and insight on these powerful instruments a decade or so back. 808 user (those automated faders, extra sampling RAM, polyphony and Compact Flash are really useful here) and still finding surprises the deeper you dig. Using rhythm kits for layering sample clips and shots coupled with RPS triggering/mutes and some prep with random velocities is a favourite here.
    Really enjoyed your enthusiasm, isn't the engine more akin to a Fantom XR/Juno-G? How about some Jarre pads and leads?
    Greetings from England.

      MC 505 has a digital filter in the tone generator chip. I guess, if You add an extra 470 ohm resistor in series to the VR5 potentiometer middle leg, You have to cut the PCB there, - can do the trick to eliminate the ugly digital Roland screaming resonance. One of My friend just drilled a hole into the poti cap, then inserted a nail and a screw to the panel :) hard limit... One night, he just smashed the MC505 under the wheel of a UAZ...

    Did you use midi on both synths from or to the 909 or to or from the XV 5050 Roland. Inspiring with regards to both of these powerful synth engines and how they were designed to work with each other. Would love to learn alot more with regards to sound design ❤

    • @BMRStudio
      @BMRStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I have a network based midi setup in the studio. The two synts are really cloze to each other , but there is a difference. XV has more power and much more complex routing. Thus not so good for live DJ situations.... Presets are very good , so the sound designing is super fast.

    1. MIDI over USB will only work on Windows 7 and 8.
    2.beyond Windows 8 you will need to use the 5 PIN MIDI ports on the MC908 and a suitable 5 pin MIDI device eg. WINDOWS 10 with a DOREMIDI HUB..

    Thank you for uploading this vid. I recently dug out MC-909 out of storage and very excited to delve into its sonic capabilities. I think this machine is very undervalued and often overlooked. I have a question regarding the SRX-01 and SRX-02 that roland has on its website available for download. I am having trouble with installing those expansions. It appears on the unit after loading them from a smart media card but when I play the patch no sound is generated. So I am wondering if u have any insight, tips or suggestions that may help me. Regardless I love to see others still interested and enthusiastic about the MC-909! Cheer and greeting from FL. Looking forward to the series. I vote for pads, and deep bass sounds. I will do my homework and find the name of a specific patch from the originally loaded sounds on this beast. New subscriber.

      Hi! The MC 505 is closer to the old boy MC 303, it uses a 64 voice ROM sampler player and a Acoustic Simulation engine. Mostly used by techno DJ,s, because the huge sound and drum set, easy of tweaking, fast filter and the horrible sounding 24 effects… was a good step up after the MC 303. I kind a hate it, because was not so stable in live act performances with Virus and Nord Modular. I sold it on EBay 15 Years ago 😂

    Hello, I have a groovebox sampler Roland MC 909 (2002), it has big problems. Initially, there was a problem with the power supply, overvoltage on the main board and a short circuit of 5 volts. Now the power supply problem is fixed, the power is normal (+ 15v, -15v, + 5v), but the device does not boot, there is only a blank blue screen. I think the reason for this may be CPU, Main SDRAM, and internal sampling 16MB RAM damaged. maybe this is not so ( processor wake up, this can be seen on the oscilloscope, the signal goes to the DRAM memory input, the PLAY button LED starts flashing, nothing else happens ( what could be the problem? maybe you know where to get the main board?

      the mainboard has more point, where additional regulation or conversion happening. Check out the service manual. I will look more after this issue. These old chips can survive overvoltage up to 50-100%. So I have a guess, this will be be a simple capacitor or a Zener diode. Just follow the 5V rail.

Then go to the MC 909, Midi RX setup, check the Device Id (must be 17) then switch off the Soft Trough, then set on all the program change, bank select etc.... Connect the USB midi out to the Midi in on the MC 909, then connect the USB MIDI In port to the MIDI out on the MC-909. Voila :) The built in USB port of the MC-909 is only for file transfer!

      The editor is working with Windows 7, 10 without any problem.
      To upgrade the firmware to 1.23, just connect the MC with USB, then follow the instructions. Pikk pakk easy. Link in the description.

    Do you have any idea how to continue pad's tails or delays from one pattern to another? It's really annoying when your pad suddenly cuts, while music changes from loud part to quiet for example. Patch remain is on. I've tried to set the same patch and mfx on same channels but nothing works. Any other suggestions?

      Fatmix Records I know this well... there is no other option, just to use the built in editor and merge the two pattern, If the note is really necessary. The other way, if the tone is monophonic, is to place a same note on the next pattern with less velocity, but with shorter length. To delete the note, again just use the editor. One time I managed to resolve this issue somehow. I recorded a simple overdubbing in song mode, then I opened the second pattern, then I find some special midi message on the beginning of the overdub midi part line, which is about “disable all note off” or something like this. I don’t remember the code. But You can figure out.

      @@BMRStudio Thank you for response! But right now another bug has appeared. In song mode (play mode 2) parts doesn't automaticly activates when steps changes. They activates only if I press fwd button or I select any step and after press play parts are playing correctly. Everything works fine in play mode 1, but effects (delays, reverb) activates each time pattern begins to play. And this is awful. I've recently updated system for latest version and this bug has appeared. Is it related?

    I have a question for you if you would be kind enough to give me your input. First of all, thank you for the videos (liked and subscribed). So, I am sequencing all of my hardware from an external sequencer, including the MC-909. Therefor I am using the MC-909 strictly as a 16 part multi-timbral sound engine and sequencing everything from external MIDI sequencer via 16 MIDI channels. So, the problem I am having is, I go to an Empty PATTERN, I choose the 16 sounds on each track, I try to save the pattern to an empty PATTERN slot internally or on a card, I get ERROR EMPTY PATTERN and it will not save. I presume this error is due to the fact that there is no sequence data written inside the MC-909 as I am sequencing externally. Do you know a way that I can basically save just a bank of 16 sounds that I have selected? I simply want to be able to save these sounds, so I can recall them later, because I can save the project on my external sequencer as well. This way if I recall both, the song is ready for playback.

      Old school trick, find your patches, tune them, then drop a note with 0 velocity into the drum track with step recording.
      The Roland MC-909 CPU cannot handle 0byte, 0 sec long patterns and songs, on system write commands. It is what it is :) Roland promised a fully functional file commander on the MC 909, but they never did it.
      Yes, its confusing... You can´t save soundsets, but You can rhythm sets!
      But I think You just missed something. This word EMPTHY on the middle of the screen is the initial pattern name :)
      just rename it.
      But the best trick is this: download the MC editor, and save your 16 track patch settings onto your computer!
      Or, save the whole sysex parameters into your sequencer.

      BMR Studio thanks for the input. I started setting up the program changes in my external sequencer (TORAIZ SQUID) and that seems to be working pretty good.
      When I was saving on the MC-909, I was changing the name before I tried to save. However I see what you are saying about putting in some ghost steps at 0 so the MC-909 has something to save.
      Another thing I’ve noticed is that if the sequences are not created on the MC-909 itself, I lose the ability to MUTE the tracks on the MC-909. I have to MUTE the midi from my sequencer or drop the fader on the MC-909. I guess the MUTE on the MC-909 is actually muting the sequence rather than the audio? Ugh haha

    • @BMRStudio
      @BMRStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djmattplay Yes, the mute is a special sysex call on the Roland Mc-909.
      Thats why we had in a past Roland MC-909. MV-8800 and the VS-2480CD together. On live. But in this case, we always used the MC-909 as a Midi Master, to make sure, the mute buttons are working :) plus much more intuitive to work together with the DJ-s. Turntable fader on the right.....

    The issue is when I start sampling whether from an internal source or resampling...a soon as the sample records as it reaches sample length limit..the machine just switches off and reboots!!
    Have u every come across this or know what could be causing it??
    Thanks
