This film, the music Donovan wrote for it, and the life of Francesco d'Assisi have inspired and comforted me for many years. I'm glad to see this on TH-cam.
This movie in the 1970s caused me to have a spiritual kundalini awakening experience like no other. That night after the movie the whole evening was full of wonders few would believe. At any time in my life since that experince if I hear the music or see these clips my vibration immediately goes up and bursts through whatever is holding me down. I am now 74 and it still works, what a gift of a lifetime.
It doesnt Matter if Religious or Atheist. Thats the wonderful Thing of God. You already have so much more in Common with God(Love, Life and Goodness) than someone going to Church every Day and just brabbling "i believe" and seeing himself as such even though He isnt not one bit ✌🏻
This whole movie, with songs, with scenery, with simplicity, with love and with real commitment to the poor and to the Lord...it spoke volumes to me then. Will it continue to do so? I hope!
@ Bob Mendelsohn It is truly a beautiful movie, with a great cast, simple but beautiful music, a great deal of charm and sweetness. A favorite, for sure.
technically its the tranquility of higher culture, I only say that because there are a lot of cultures that dont believe in god who experience the same thing.
Amen! My father says to me that the devil fears and hates St. Francis due to the fact that he truly try to live as close to the teachings of Christ in his own lifetime. St. Francis is a constant reminder of how we live like Christ. Be His disciples and examples for others. Just like Christ was with us when He walked amongst us.

Graham Faulkner's sub texting (his facial expressions especially his eyes) are phenomenal. It is a shame he all but quit acting after his role in this movie
Because St. Francis's life affected him... Aside from the innumerable hypocrites of actors in the world, he was a jewel in the rubble... He's seen what life is, what's God's glory is, so he quit the fake life of acting... A truly blessed man...
Remembering this noble and humble servant of God on the day of his feast, 4 October 2016. Many thanks to you, Brother, for your humble service, love and courage in all you did during your time on this earth!
The marvel is that He became a Perfect Master, probably shortly before he droped the body at 42. Avatar Meher Baba stated He was one of the few Perfected Ones living in Europe in this age. 💖🙏🌍
Sorry for my little rant, but I just finished a wonderful meditation and prayed for a long while after for God to open my heart to His divine love, so that I may become an instrument of His will and express His grace and compassion unto the world. Two doves came to me when I finished my meditation to encourage me and let me know that God is listening. The more we learn to pray with all our heart, the more we may find fulfillment in life and have more powerful prayers. What you give is what you get
In our age we get so distracted by what is outside of our selves. To be spiritual is to have one's awareness deeply established in one's true self and not caught up with the external world, not to identify with what is outside and confuse that with what we really are. God is within us and our purpose is to realize our union with God within ourselves. This is pure bliss and the source of everything good in life. All good comes from God, all evil comes from believing we are separated from him.
wise words. it is something that I believe we often forget which is really a shame. but it is never too late for us to take back our union with God by looking at our inner self.
This can also be used to heal. Jesus used the laying on of hands to heal many, along with many other saints. It's just being deeply sensitive to the owns body. What we put our attention on grows. If we focus on our perfected spirit and realize it then others around us will be healed by our example. No words really need be spoken. St. Francis said himself, "I used to believe in words."

The story of St Francis of Assisi, captivated many hearts to follow God:summon to live the vows of poverty,to possess God entirely.St francis renounced all comforts of life,in loosing all,he found thie famous franciscan order that produces many saints to holy mother church.I love this movie so much, all the simple songs inspired me to run away from materialism,in order not to let my soul be drowned by useless wordly cares.
Yes absolutely true. What will it profit a man the whole world but lose his soul. I watched this movie when I was between 14 to 16 of memories serves me right. I am now 66 years and still has an impact. Our Lord is real. And He is coming for a people who loves and abides in his Word. God bless Shalom
the best scene in the film....dark, moving, medieval, atmospheric......more of the film should've been like this (rather than the pretty flowers stuff)
Sang this song at Szentendre Skansen's 50th jubilee party, with the workers' choir. That performance has determined a lifetime artistical inspiration for me. Looking at the lyrics, I wondered "yet I haven't noticed how universal message it carries, why on Earth no one has ever asked for a blessing on it among yoga people, to use it as a bhajan, as it happened to The Sutherland Brothers' "I Am Sailing" - and the continuation of this thought, was the call from inside that THE COMPLETE MOVIE IS SHOUTING FOR A HINDI VERSION. Meanwhile, recognitions on similarities between my personal life experiences and the way Francesco's life is portrayed, have confirmed that this translation work and organising the dubbing, is an inevitable mission. Childlike, pantheistic sense of life - OK. Various artistical appeals - OK. Appeal to rewake lost treasures - OK. Appeal to charity - OK. Illness(es) opening the eyes on the truth - OK. Conflict with the greedy, shopaholic, Francophobiac, aggressive malignant narc parent of same gender - OK. Presence of a pampering female elder, in conflict with the aggressive narc one - OK (on my side, this used to be my late maternal granny). Icon-shock at a holy place - OK. Being targeted by either secular, either cleric officials - OK (the latter I met on Hindu base). Sudden influence on an official which warmed his heart - OK (it's been an Indian embassy consular at whose place I did the cleanup once). Now I'm working on the Hindi translation. I'll always bless my Hindi teacher Dr Mária Négyesi's name, who's been doing the free Hindi language course at Amrita Sher-Gil Cultural Centre (Budapest, Hungary) for 20+ years, not knowing that some enquirers who want to learn Hindi out of scholar circles, might get a handhold for life-changing experiences from her enthusiasm, efforts and adherence.
The year this film came out, I was on track to my life's aspiration - to become a corporate lawyer for an oil company and make as much money as humanly possible. But in the midst of that journey, I saw this film and read the Gospels for the first time, and 'fell in love', as it were, with the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth and of Francesco - and instead left it all behind, and became, first, a 'Jesus hippie', and later, a Social Work Chaplain to the homeless and mental health communities for some 38 years. I return to this film (and the Gospels themselves, of course) to inspire me to hold fast to the vision of building the welcoming Realm of God community among the so-called "least of these". And like the song says...
This movie and music has resonated in me from the first time I saw it. It instantly makes me realize how in the pursuit of "everyday life", we are so pathetically off the track. It's as if someone said "on this earth you can make heaven or Hell", and we have chosen Hell.
I love this movie szene. I am old now and feel like Francesco: all these things which were important for me in those days are today not. Other priorities are now very important for me: love and to be loved. There are no other things for me anymore.

Oh dear, was it this cold with snow and were some barefoot in it? My soul aches with compassion. This seems to be the film version I watched as a highly sensitive and traumatized child. Was not able to watch many movies, even made for children. The soul purity of this one resonated with my soul and let it be in sufficient peace/positive emotion to enjoy it. Where can the full movie be seen, please? Anyone knows? For free; I do not have budget for films. Thanks for the upload.
Our consciousness/awareness and God lies within the heart area of our body. We must learn to fallow the path back to the source of our true heart. The mind wasn't meant to decide what is true or what to do. Our heart or God already intuitively knows everything and should be the decider. Hearing the intuition of this heart is not easy in our present age. Through deep prayer and meditations we may regain this ability. Essentially we will spontaneously and effortlessly begin to express Gods will.
Can someone tell me how did St. Francis deal with the cold in his feet and hands? Wouldn't he get frostbite? It must have gotten below zero in Assisi since they get harsh winters there.
