- Before this new golden age of streaming and binge-watching, if a TV show didn’t live up to the ratings it would be canceled almost immediately. Today, the competition is even higher because of the many streaming outlets that churn out shows.
A TV show may have the most compelling writing and gripping performances and still get canceled, because it gets lost in the ocean of streaming services' endless lists of other shows.
Every year shows come and go and 2018 is no different. Here is the real reason these TV shows were canceled in 2018.

I've been missing Once Upon a Time since it stupidly veered off course in the third season and killed of a character that was central to the overall story and kept Captain Hook instead, then had to shoe horn him into plot that should have been filled by the character they killed off. Also I couldn't stand what they were going to do and did do to the character of Emma Swan, who was my favorite, along with Snow and Charming.

It's not that shows getting cancelled that pisses me of the most, it's never finishing a story and leaving on a cliffhanger. If I could change laws any TV company that's gonna cancel a show has to wind the show up with a proper ending no cliffhangers.

I agree. I hate how so many shows do that hoping to force their network to give them another season even though they weren't renewed already. Those writers don't care about the fans at all. Not saying each season has to feel like it ended but stop trying to force networks to renew it at the expense of the fans. Hell they said timeless was spared once. Instead of being happy giving the second season a good ending with room for another they killed off a main character and were like ok hope we can save him, oh and we're not going to tie up any loose ends we have.
Or Tony, they end the series with a horrid final episode like "Penny Dreadful" did. Worst final episode ever ! And the series was so good !

The problem with tv shows is that networks still use the Neilsen ratings system, which is so outdated. Most people stream shows now. I wish these networks would realize that and stop cancelling shows.
Yes exactly! And really has anyone ever actually seen a Nielsen box? What if they are a myth that allows the network to use that excuse any time they want? Why do only some houses have them and I don’t? And what percentage of houses in any country have them? Dont they realize that the ratings for a show is so much more? sorry I’m not asking you these questions I’m just putting them out there in general lol

Palabok de Ensaymada they are these mythological boxes that are what count the ratings on anything broadcasted on tv that only are in a small percentage of each country for the past 40 odd years so whatever ratings that are posted it’s not counting millions of others watching it and I don’t think actually exist and if they do its long past dated since people stream stuff more and more and it’s fucking bullshit that some of my favorite shows get canceled cuz these select few get to decide for us what will stay on like fucking years and years of shit like American idle and other reality shows and all the shows about cops, doctors, and lawyers, cuz we don’t have enough of those and yes there are many good ones but still, but shows like Shooter, Colony, Dark Matter just recently and it’s always the serialized shows that seem to bite it cuz people’s attention spans seem to have diminished and so many others are short lived. Now I know it’s not really the fault of the people if these myth boxes who might not even know they have one, or if they do it’s a conspiracy and the networks use them as an excuse and lie about ratings unless producers are forced to be their bitches.

If they didn't cancel some shows, they couldn't make new shows. Everything cannot run forever.

sorry I loved Chuck all seasons, love the drama of s5. I agree Luxifer s3 is weak some episodes but not that bad.

Dat was one of my faves. Great scifi n unique ideas n witty banter. Shud have gone on at least few more seasons to build the storyline n characters.
Why I think Firefly was cancelled, is because the leader of the network at that time, were a woman(Not trying to blame all women or anything, just this individual) that didn't agree with the theme of the "fancy escorts" in the series, and perhaps other aspects of the show... There is also the possibility that she was not alone about this decision, or she was forced to do this by other individual(s).
It might be the reason why they intentionally aired the episodes out of order, and changed the airing slots either once or multiple times, to one in particular called the "Friday night death slot" , so they could blame it on the "ratings" were poor why it was cancelled; because people would have problems following it (New timeslots were perhaps poorly announced as well?)!
She is forever marked by this decision btw, since it's one of the worst decisions ever made in US TV!
But again, can you really trust Fox with any Sci-fi or adventure series at all? It's one thing to cancel shows, but you need to give it a chance to conclude (I'm against shows that drag out far too long btw!)! I don't start watching a series if it's not at least 4 seasons long, since a lot of series in these genres are axed at season 3! I only consider watching series less than 4 seasons if Netflix makes it, cause I trust them more than TV Networks and their flawed ratings system (Which becomes especially inaccurate regarding sci-fi and adventure series, since it's most likely being viewed on non-primary TV in a house/abode, which is not a metric that is counted at all!)!

The Last Man on Earth broke my heart when it was cancelled. One of the best shows ever. Clever, funny, great story, heart. So good. Such a shame.

The reason most shows don't find an audience is be because networks have no patience. They never leave a show in a time slot. They have long periods off air for sporting events like olympics playoffs etc. People can't find their shows again in new slots or after long breaks. Too many good new shows never got a chance to find an audience, or time for existing audiences to find their show again.

Kev Harvey maybe the gore was too much, I did think it focussed too much on excessive gore sometimes. The first session was better than second, maybe because they were more into the story than gore special effects.
It's a shame really, a post apocalyptic mad max demon hellscape, would have been fun.

Marie Antoinette's Cake couldn’t agree more. The first movie I saw her in ‘the cell’ I loved her and was excited about a new actress and since then, nothing. But she’s one of the most beautiful women (even young 20 year olds) there is. She also seems smart and nice in interviews.

I loved The Exorcist so freaking much, especially season 1. I'm so sad it got cancelled. Not angry because I knew it would happen, just sad.
OUAT lost it completely in season 7, they wrote out the main character and the majority of the cast and started an entirely new weird series with very few of the old cast.

Raptor Jesus not to mention the acting took a series toll. The new ones, at least. I found myself rolling my eyes at season 7 more times than I had in the first 6 seasons. And I only watched the first 8 episodes of season 7.

I know that , but it's at least something . I'm from India And I dont know much about American history , I know names but just a hint about the actual story. so I used google about it , and when I saw the twist they gave to the story it was just amazing and I'm also a Matt Lanter fan.

Are you kidding me? Season 7 was by far the strangest and way too out there, but all 6 seasons before were FLAWLESS, and anyone who thinks it wasn't has no taste. I mean, it was slow to start, but once it got going, it kept going, all 6 seasons of it leading to the 7th. I'm not a fairy tale person, I don't like that kinda stuff, but Once was just that good.
I hung in for the whole series, mostly hoping it would start making sense again. Instead they just added more characters, and more realms, and more timelines. Hope they managed to live happily ever after.

Monty Zuniga Jr yes, after that season I was all lost in the show and they would retell the same episode plot line for Snow White and Prince Charming or Rumpelstiltskin and Belle but made it worse each time next to bring new characters that went no where or die for pointless reasons. Plus I hated how they made 2 seasons in 1, yes there's 7 season but to me it felt like 10. Wish Netflix or AMC would will make a Fables show. If you don't know that comic series which its the reason why we got Grimm and Once Upon a Time because the networks couldn't figure out the proper storyline to tell or give it justice to the comic book so they went with their own version of fairy tales shows.
MissArtSucker ABC was originally making Fables. Did development stuff and then decided to change it up into their own thing and called it Once Upon A Time. I liked Once, but would LOVE Fables.
Honestly deep down we all know that part of the reason why FOX cut off this amount of shows in 2018 is because they're cleaning the house for a smoother process of being part of the Disney.

Aaron Glisson Couldn't agree more. But I pretty much knew it had no shot of getting renewed. It was SO long in between seasons, people forgot about it. Plus, it usually isn't a good sign when you only have 10 eps to begin with and then they start combining multiple eps into a single day. At least they are giving it a chance to wrap up the cliffhanger. It pisses me off so much when they cancel a show and never give it a chance to wrap up.

Brody Scarborough They kind of mentioned part of it. They got Thursday night football, so they had to cut an entire day out of programming. They already have one less hour than the other networks because of the 10pm news (At least here in the ET). Though that only applies during football season, so not sure about the rest of the year. They also wanted Last Man Standing, but didn't have another family show to go with it. So they axed an additional hour for that and a new show (The Cool Kids).

Sadly Lucifer was a victim of Business. FOX had to drop Lucifer, they didn't want to. The production company is Warner Bros. Television, and they have a non-compete clause in the contract with FOX. Because FOX is being bought by Disney, they had to drop all their shows with such clauses.

Okay even though Once Upon A Time was a good show, the write just kept it going too long! It should’ve ended after the sixth season. Like there was never a good time for not even one person to be happy. At all times everyone was in danger.
It wasn't the writers. It was the network that decided to renew the show. While it could have ended after season 6, it didn't because ABC renewed the show, season 7 wasn't all that bad and it did give Regina the most perfect ending and expanded upon Emma's happy ending as well. The writers just intentionally wanted to reboot the series, they were only gonna get their happy endings if the show ended or if the actors decided to leave.
If anything, I bet ABC did want to cancel it there and then after being renewed, because they moved it to Friday nights. It could have been an intentional cancellation.

The show got gradually worse right from the start. So much promise, but imho the best way to enjoy it is watching the first 2 1/2 seasons and never fall for the literal sequel Hook of the mid season finale.
Agreed. I don’t have cable so I stream/binge almost everything, the issue being I see repeats in plots very easily. Literally one issue would get resolved and then... uhh... ok... new curse! Within 2 weeks I’d see it happen like 3 times, after a while it just got boring.

I think OUAT ended perfectly. I was skeptical when season 7 came out showing Henry all grown up and mirroring the story of its origin season. But it lead to many tears and happy endings for characters I loved and had grown to love and wrapped the show up in a neat little bow. I would’ve loved to have had more, but I think if they’d have tried to keep going after the soft reboot that the show would’ve lost the quality the fans loved about it. I think it’s ending was perfect

Some of these shows I never watched and glad they got canceled...But some shows I do miss like Once Upon A Time that was a good show but didn't watch the last season. And its good not to get to attach to some of these shows cause u don't never know when it will get cancel! But Netflix could pick up some of these shows! Some are worth saving and some not!
I don't mind when shows get canceled. There's usually a reason. But for crying out loud, at LEAST allow the story to finish. I hate cliffhanger cancellations.

Personally speaking, I feel that OUAT ended perfectly at Season 7. By which, I mean it gave what many of us sorely desired for so very long; Regina's TRUE happy ending.
Many of us, even me (to a degree) felt that Season 6 was the true series end (with the principle cast. Season 7, in a way, was like a bit of an epilogue for the story; when you think about it.
To elaborate, Seasons 1-6 took us on adventures with the main cast of heroes, heroines and villains. So, after all this time, it was time for Henry to strut his stuff and become his OWN hero.
Which is what I feel Season 7 did rather well. My only minor issue with it was how Hyperion Heights didn't quite feel like home, compared to Storybrooke

Seth Long would be next to impossible to have a show that literally had one person. It wasn’t meant to be taken as he was LITERALLY the last man on earth, it was that he thought he was, and he’s the focal point of the show. I think everyone knew there was going to be more characters when it started, I know I assumed right away that it would. Didn’t take the title literal.

I think leaving a show on a cliff hanger or otherwise unfinished should be illegal... What production companies should be required to do is, put into a trust account, two to three times the amount of the highest costing episode... If the show IS NOT concluded; a third-party can petition to take partial limited control of the IP and that of the trust and continue the show or conclude it with a final episode or movie...
The reason I have this view is because as a show watcher, I had been made to sit through countless ads that made the production company millions. I am the buyer. And, if a show is left unfinished; I have been cheated... If I hire a roofer and pay them to put a knew roof on my house and that roofer fails to complete the job, but leaves some of the supplies behind; I can still sue that roofer and get them to pay for me to hire someone else to come and properly finish the job. Why should television be any different?
I'm not saying that every cancel show should qualify for a third-party being able to take that trust and the IP; just those who are penny-pinching and canceling shows because they don't want to pay actors more... Companies that go under are declare bankruptcy for instance, should not be subject to this. Shows that have no significant outcry over their potential cancellation is another. Shows like Defying Gravity; Breakout Kings; V, etc. would be allowed to continue. Whereas shows like Stargate Universe would not.

You paid to have watch a show to its conclusion; through extremely expensive cable and satellite service; and through about 1/3rd of a programs time slot being packed with commercials... These companies make billions on the contingent that they give you an entertaining product. Now, if they take you hard earned money and don't deliver; you are saying just suck it up and don't even think of recovering from your loses? Now that is the most absurd thing ever.

At least with my proposal, production companies, would have an incentive to conclude the product that they have agreed to when we paid them to provide said product through service fee's and advertisement dollars.
Walking dead made/makes about 11 million dollars an episode. Or they profit(ed) about 8 million dollars a week from the Walking Dead alone. No, $3.24 isn't much when you look at just one viewer; but when you look at how Comcast, DirectTV and Dish Network package channels; they get that for every single service subscriber wither or not they actually watch The Walking Dead or AMC. When you add that up; it gives AMC a valuation of over 2.8 billion dollars in 2017.
So, by your logic; if a roofer took your money then thinks the job is to hard, or that you are just to difficult to work for; then they have the right to walk away and you just have to suck it up? Who do you think pays the advertisers? That money just doesn't come out of thin air.
SGU (at least the first season) was just a rehash of Battlestar scripts. As a fan; I had to watch it; just like I had to watch Star Trek Enterprise and this latest abomination, Discovery....
There are many indie production companies that could do a great job at reviving a series (or at least concluding it)... The problem is, even if someone does want to do this; they often can't because of IP protections. I am a script writer and want to do a direct spin-off of the Wonder Years, but because of IP, I can't... In my case, the series was concluded, so I understand Fox's viewpoint; but in cases where shows are left purposely and intentionally unfinished, there should be protections for the viewers.
Many shows love ending on a cliffhanger so people would want to see the next season. Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles did that with Season 2.

This double-sucks for me. The main reason I started watching was because I've got a crush on Michael Cassidy, who I've been missing since they cancelled his other sitcom, Men at Work. Not to mention his blink-and-you'll-miss-it turn as Jimmy Olsen in BvS, and that bit part in Dog Days. That guy needs a better agent. 😫

Forever will never work even tho the show itself is actually above average, why? Because Castle was still on at the time, Forever if you think about it, is just a mystery themed Castle copy, the casting was on point tho, well almost on point, Tom Ellis would make a better Henry Morgan, Ioan Gruffudd is pretty good but everyone knows he is a box office bomb, I don't know why they still try, even his new adventure in Australia kinda failed, what a waste of that handsome face.

There are too many options now, and too many paid subscribe channels. If I owed all of them I’d pay more than cable when I had that. Its not worth paying to watch one show.

Once upon a time had to go. It was so good and grounded at the beginning but got cheesy and ridiculous.
So basically, every show except for Roseanne was due to ratings.
but then, as someone else mentioned, the ratings system can not be relied upon. I record EVERYTHING I like so that I can watch it later when I am not too busy or at work AND fast fwd the commercials is GREAT!

Hello. I try not to get attached watching too many shows anymore just because they may not coma back the next season but I sure LOVED the Ones Upon Time. I couldn't watch the last season so I didn't see all the chanced actors...which is better that way. Thanks 👍

Here's the deal. I LOVED Once Upon a Time from the beginning because they took what we knew as fairy tales and made them real with some minor tweaks to tie them together which was a story book.
Where they screwed up is when they started tying characters together that shouldn't be and their reasoning was made up on the spot without a dedicated narrative. For example when this shenanigans started is that Peter Pan was designated a "villain" as a child... but happened to be the father of Mr. Gold... who was 'The Beast' in Beauty and the Beast aka "Rumpelstiltskin". This opens too many doors and there's only so much you can do with having the multiple characters in one form.
Got even worse when you add a whole new land and reality with Oz and Wonderland... Then they decide to replace Cinderella with an African-American actress that wasn't necessary when Princess Tiana was already developed and the fact that Cinderella got her nickname as a fair skinned woman who got cinders on her face to alter her after she cleaned the fireplace as a maid. But hey, let's not factor any of the lore into the show after we've made millions right?

It took me a couple of episodes to get into Taken, but now that I'm completely hooked, they go and cancel it! Also, I watch it on Hulu so don't know if those numbers are even calculated.
shows that should continue on netflix, The Exorcist, Damien & Dracula- all were good shows with good writing and actors and so much story to be told
Sci-Fy had no reason to cancel Dark Matter it was by far it's best program during it's run

I love binge watching shows, I literally stop watching a show a few episodes in just so I can binge on it after lol. I hate the waiting!
@@blackham7 in israel they release episodes 4 days a week and take a break on thursday till sunday and i can tell you i prefer it being 1 episode a week because when you release the episodes day after day it takes away the suspense and you don't really look forqards to seeing what happend when you know the next episode is in less than 12 hours

I wish studios, if going to cancel a series, especially if it has diehard fans (hear me???!!!!! Firefly and Stargate Universe, and remember Jericho!!!!!!), would at least give us the RESPECT of writing a last few episodes to give us a PROPER ENDING!
OR, here is a novel thought........ Why not make LIMITED seasons! Basically, write each season's worth of episodes, as it they were a mini series. This way, we have the beginning, and a PROPER ENDING. And if the show has enough interest, create the next season, with a beginning, and a PROPER ENDING. Doing this, will keep fans happy and satisfied. Nothing worse than ending a fan favorite series with an intensive, emotional cliff hanger, only to cancel the show!!!! Example? The last (ever) episode of Stargate Universe, with the one kid left all alone, staring out the window at empty space.........
Jericho suffered because of the Writers strike. That 2nd season was awesome because it was only 7 episodes. Straight to the point season, no fillers. That's how every show should be like.
As a SG fan, I thought the universe serie was crap. It lacked all that made SG1 and Atlantis such a powerful series.
I watched a few episodes, but it was just painful and boring.

The tv shows that I miss the most is Freakish and Shadowhunters on Hulu. Hulu cancelled after two seasons and Hulu cancelled Shadowhunters after eight seasons.
another show that got "cancelled" was Odyssey 5 with Peter Weller (Robocop movies) such a shame that one got cancelled too.

I liked *Last Man On Earth* for the first season or so, then they lost me. They gave the show that title, then they seemed to add another character every week!
I wanted to like *Timeless* because I loved Abigail Spencer's work on *Rectified* but it was just awful.
J-Lo's *Shades of Blue* and the *Taken* spinoff just look bad. I could be wrong.

One show they never even gave a chance to, a couple years ago, was "Forever," featuring truly unique characters and premise. The only thing is, they had to throw in an arch-nemesis almost immediately. That seems to be a device they just have to attach to every show nowadays. What was wrong with just having episodes with a storyline that ended? Then you wouldn't have that unfinished feeling at the end, or the feeling they were just stringing it along after the best days were done.
I often wonder if these networks take into account foreign viewers of these shows when they decide how popular they are!
