Even though it didn't end up being the solution, if you ever have to kill boos for a key again, I'm pretty sure boo circles count as one entity.
You have to kill the entire circle to get the key from them. So by running left and right, never killing a full circle, you actually gave yourself a zero percent chance to get anything from them.

I'm guessing the Yoshi ended up between the two munchers because the game had not loaded them in yet and you caused them to load in at just the right time to cause Yoshi to get stuck between them.

Yoshi got between the munchers because of spawning/despawning mechanics. Yoshi doesn't despawn as long as he's alive. So he was between the munchers when they spawned. You could have gotten him out by despawning the munchers.
I once made a puzzle level that used this type of mechanic actually.

Mario Maker makes us wonder at each episode: if Princess Peach is constantly captured, why she doesn't increase security in the castle? Even for Mario it would be akward, it's like: Hey, Princess Peach even if it doesn't seem like I have a life, in the mornings I don't get up with the motivation to rescue you just for you to tell me I'm your hero and give me a kiss on the nose.
In fairness I should already be making more money than you, I spend more time in your castle than you because it turns out that you were kidnapped. If I were kidnapped, would you go to my rescue? I want you to go personally, not send minions, they never help me.

Fun Fact: loaded items stay loaded farther off screen than not loaded items need to load. In other words, items don't exist until they're loaded so Yoshi can run through their position while a certain distance off screen. The same is true for enemies but they can't go as far.
