The Maasai Mara in the Rainy Season - Safari Tips

  • AH! The Maasai Mara Rain Season. This has got to be one of my favorite times of the year in the Mara. March April May are considered by many the worst time of the year as this is the peak of the wet season, but for a number of reasons Id like to share with you, it is also the best time of the year.
Our trip to the Maasai Mara in March 2018 saw a tremendous amount of rain. It virtually rained every day. But the pattern was somewhat predictable. In the morning there were light showers which gave way to a bright and sunny midday. Then by mid afternoon the clouds would roll in and this is the best time for Wildlife Photography is Kenya. You see the rain off in the distance as the gigantic thunderclouds let light rays shine through. All you need is a willing subject in the right position and you have, for me, the best opportunity for a perfect wildlife photo.
Another positive element is that everyone else is so focused on the busy season (in other words the Migration) that it leaves the rainy season empty of competitors. You have the space to breathe and explore at your own leisure often being the only car for miles around.

Lovely video Klaus. One of the things I especially love about the rain is the way it changes the animal behaviour, creates a very different ambience and choosing the right exposure can make the rain a very dramatic frame. A wildlife photographer is someone who relishes and seeks different conditions and is not fixated on the subject. Too many people out there are fixated on on the Big Five in East Africa. They fail to observe other species, to relish the dust and the rain. These are elements that to them, interfere with their photography. They shut the windows, cover up and moan about the rain, or how dust is going to get into their cameras, or the rain is going to wet their lens. To me, atmospheric changes like dust and rain are EXACTLY what transforms the scene and make me want to pick up my camera. The same subject and setting are now infused with the theater of dust or rain. Animals behave differently in these conditions and there is so much potential drama in the frame. This is what a wildlife photographer looks for. Drama, theatre, action, different behavior in response to the conditions.
So when people ask me why I keep going back to shoot the "same old lions, same old cheetahs" year after year, I smile to myself because they will never understand how important the conditions are and what it means to an image.
My advice to people is, when you go out on safari next time, be prepared with rain gear, dust covers, on your camera and lens, keep a poncho ready and don't miss the opportunities that unfold before you. When everyone else is busy shutting the roof and closing the windows, you will be nailing those shots. If someone asks you what you were doing, you can ask them, "Have you ever seen the rain"? :)

    So True.
I was there in April 2021 and it was marvelous.
One more thing, it's low season between April and June and rates are lower, because of no migration there are fewer vehicles and thus it gives u more private time with the big cats. Remember the cats are territorial and they are always there whether there is migration or not.

As seen in the video - the rain season has its challenges. However there are less people and there are always animals. I prefer this time of the year as i feel it is better for my photography (which should tell you its a great time to still go). However there is perhaps a little more driving around and if your children are very young or get bored quickly then it may not be the BEST time. Hope this helps.
