    Finally, got to catchup on my yt after the holidays. That is a pretty nice looking unit, even if it's a bit scuffed and the screen replacement did wonders.
    On Ds fixing, I have a story of my own to share.
    My first ds, a aqua 3Ds I got on a deal of ebay never worked unless plugged in the charger, I mostly play at home so no big deal. But I did want to have the ability to take it away from an outlet.
    Did some research, got an external battery charger and a new battery, no dice, it wouldn't run of a fresh battery.
    Then I tried using a bunch of usb power banks and an adapter cable but it would brown out, even on ones that put out 2A.
    So I kept up with the research and found the power management chip, some obscure Ti part I couldn't find squat about.
    Got back in ebay and ordered 2 things, something that looked like a custom 3ds external power bank (I''ll get back to that) and an other 3ds aqua with a broken game slot but intact charging.
    The new 3ds arrived, went to a friend with smd soldering chops and the required tools and got to it, figuring It would be easy to transplant the chip. Now stop me if you know this, but little did I suspect, that the bga bastard had such small pitch connections that soldering it manually was almost impossible. We both tried to re-seat the chip and see if the donator would work, but nothing beyond the white screen so that was bust.
    The power bank(www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271529226459 similar design), witch arrived later, worked fine and gave me 3-4 hours of juice, took it apart and was surprised to find actual dc-dc regulation to the proper voltage and current (or near enough for it to not brown out) and either a clone of or an actual AT micro to manage charging and discharging.
    A couple of moths later I just got a working blue 3Ds xl and shelved it, still miss the form factor and now that I'm looking at getting the upgrade, I think I'm going to get the regular one.
    I will some day try and hack the external power pack with more capacity and a way to load games without powering down the 3Ds just for the nostalgia and because it was my first 3Ds
    Sorry for the mountain of text, the pointless story and any grammar abuse.

    Getting a screen protector helps a bit with the glossy thing

  • @joydivider42
    @joydivider42 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Yeah I've recently been buying them in barely used condition cos I don't fancy stripping them down.....nice to see how it's done though

  • @jrsomethingnumbers9704
    @jrsomethingnumbers9704 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    One thing I found about the matte screen over the glossy one is that it takes more force to activate. I did a test in pictochat, and if you're drawing lightly, it'll draw a bunch of dashes instead of a straight line, unless you apply noticeable force.
    Sadly since Nintendo will never sell new glossy ones, this is all we've got. Here's hoping the matte screen can handle the extra force. I will miss the smoothness of the glossy one, though.
    Great tutorial btw, helped me a lot. Since this video is closing in on 4 years old, how's the screen on yours shaped up over the years?

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely agree that glossy would have been much preferable over matte but I'm just happy that they are available and cheap. I still use the dsi xl shown in this video (I recently hacked it to run cfw and play games off the onboard sd card, in fact was just playing castlevania order of ecclesia last week) and haven't had any problems yet. Then again I really don't play many games that absolutely require touch input and for those that do I am pretty gentle with it.

    • @jrsomethingnumbers9704
      @jrsomethingnumbers9704 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad to hear it still works. Maybe I'll just get used to it overtime. I can do the magic seals in Dawn of Sorrow just fine, so it shouldn't be too bad. Also I've hacked my DSi xl too, recently. What a coincidence lol

    • @Fourier9042
      @Fourier9042 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So is this matte finish touch screen is official parts from Nintendo? As you said the screen definitely need more force to detect touch signal which is annoying.

    • @sjm4306

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before you purchase a new touch screen, have you tried using the built in touch screen calibration in the menu settings. It could just be an issue of needing to recalibrate, but if that doesn't fix it then your DS might need the touch screen replaced.

    • @sjm4306
      @sjm4306  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cristian G It is usually like a 95% chance one of the display ribbons is not seated properly. The connectors are so fiddly that even if they look good it could still be an issue. The only other thing would be if you forgot to plug in the small two pin red and black wired connector between the smaller button board and the main board which connects the battery to the system.

      Lithium rechargeable batteries permanently lose capacity and/or are damaged when the cell voltage drops below around 3V (which can happen due to self discharge if you haven't charged it in a long time). What I would suggest is try charging it (and every once and awhile touch the bottom near the battery to check the temperature) and see if the battery protection circuitry in the DSI can recondition the battery. If it gets uncomfortably hot or the charging light doesn't even come on then stop charging and get a new battery. Honestly though, I haven't used or charged my original DS in something like 4 years and it miraculously still turns on.
