Funnily enough they still do this today i had it done as a child due to a bleed on the brain it's called trepanning or bore hole surgery. They drilled two holes in my skull to release the pressure buildup on my brain. Funnily enough though one of the symptoms prior to finding out about the bleed was actually excruciating headaches that occurred every night for about a week before i started showing stroke like symptoms and went to the hospital to get it checked out. It actually worked wonders i was essentially a cabbage before the surgery because of the bleed and couldn't move and could barely talk but when i woke up i felt perfectly fine so yeah it might be a little wild but it works.

Funnily enough they still do this today i had it done as a child due to a bleed on the brain it's called trepanning or bore hole surgery.
They drilled two holes in my skull to release the pressure buildup on my brain.
Funnily enough though one of the symptoms prior to finding out about the bleed was actually excruciating headaches that occurred every night for about a week before i started showing stroke like symptoms and went to the hospital to get it checked out.
It actually worked wonders i was essentially a cabbage before the surgery because of the bleed and couldn't move and could barely talk but when i woke up i felt perfectly fine so yeah it might be a little wild but it works.
the only thing escaping from that hole is my blood and my soul thank god i wasnt born in 1500

Trepanning would actually release a lot of pressure on the brain, which led them to believing it worked. Even back in medieval times, the surgery was successful, as can be seen by signs of healing on the skulls of those who had underwent the procedure.
Iirc it also helps for internal bleeding too
