I like that Gary mentioned Martinelli. So underrated and barely mentioned by pundits. Obviously the focus is on Saka because he’s English but Martinelli has been equally as good.

Agreed, and in the last part of the season when the majority of the team crumbled under pressure, Martinelli performed every week. He's a menace to all defenders.

Martinelli’s been great but Saka’s gotta be ahead for scoring and assisting vital goals. So many of his goals and assists have been either winners, equalisers or to go ahead in a match.

It’s quite crazy that Salah still reached those numbers, because he has looked like a shadow of himself for a lot of this season.
Well hes been playing in a team with zero creativity in midfield, hes had to create his own chances so shadow of his self is harsh.
I watched all the Liverpool games and Salah was not good this season but the whole team was poor to be fair. Even I'm amazed he managed to get those numbers. We should've never given Salah the big contract.
harry kanes been so underrated this season, 28 PL Goals, This is his best season since 2017-18, ever since 2017-18 hes not been able to score more than 23 goals hes not been able to come close to 30 goals and the fact that hes come so close to it in this spurs team is crazy. Hes not gotten the recognition he deserves purely due to haaland
He's still a key attacker for a high-tempo Liverpool team who are capable of bullying teams like... well, Bournemouth and United. He's underperformed xG for instance, but he's good at getting into chances when they're there to be had
I remember in 2018 when people were saying his numbers were a one off, well here we are in 2023 lol
Salah and Kane are easily forgotten this season due to Haaland. But they both performed extremely well, despite their teams' overall performances. Jamie makes a great point.. and the stats don't lie!

He's been forgotten about because Arsenal have dropped off and he's been injured (perhaps linked) but Saliba is a Rolls-Royce of a defender and improved Arsenal immensely.

Alisson Becker is easily Liverpool's player of the session. He's saved us so many times this year.

Feels like Gary is judging Salah against Past-Salah, as opposed to the rest of the players in *this* season alone, which is what he should be doing.

@@jamesbarry9477 I don't know about that. For every goal he has, he's wasted a ton of chances through being greedy or just being incapable of taking the ball onto his right foot. I'm a red, but I'd take Saka over him at this point.
Honestly great to see Botman in Jamie’s team. He’s criminally underrated.
He really isnt hes one of the most talked about respected defenders in the league this season... every MOTD, Talksport and 5 live regularly comment on him...
hes not been one of the best cb in the league though.

I think you just answered your own question. He moved from defence to midfield....
If he'd played defence all season, he'd probably have made the team.
Stones is playing a very different kind of role. It's something that few can do and he is world class at that. However, it's not necessary that he will do well in every team and system.
With all due respect do you watch city? He starts from centre back and moves into midfield into a hybrid role. He's had one of the best seasons in history with how much iq he is and the intelligence he has. I don't think I've seen a player do what he's done in my lifetime

Ake not being in either team is shocking. Arguably the best defender at city. He has been unreal all year. Also he got a huge important goal against arsenal in the fa cup (1-0 victory) and against west ham in the league.

What I like about it is that there's no bias from Gary as he picked no Man United players to go in that team who have had decent seasons along with Brighton, Brentford and Fulham.

Picking Ruben Dias in defense is shambolic. He’s good, but there’s been so many better CB’s to put in there, including Varane and Martinez, and even Luke Shaw. De Gea won golden glove, Man Utd conceded 8 goals at home this season. And Casemiro 100% deserves to be in there. Suspensions and all, all they did was prove how influential he is.
Picking those players does not make anyone biased, they make them a good football fan.

Performance matters as well as g+a assists. I’ve been rooting against Arsenal all season and I’m delighted they didn’t end up winning the league, but Saka and Martinelli have been, without a doubt, the best RW are LW in the league this season - if you have watched them play. Their intensity has been something else.
For me they’ve been the best but to say without a doubt is an exaggeration. Rashford and Salah are close.

@@surafelunited They play vastly different roles on their respective teams. Casemiro is all over the place, causing the opponent problems on both sides of the ball. Rodri is the overwatch tower in the back of the midfield that doesn't let the opponent out of their own half. He is a huge part of why City keeps 80% possession against every team in the world. To say that anyone is "miles" better than Rodri as a holding midfielder is preposterous.

Alisson has definitely shown again why he's argubally the best keeper in the world. Definitely top 3. The amount of 1 on 1's he faces and stops is ridiculous. And Salah in his worst season has 19 goals and 11 assists in the league. Next season Liverpool are back to challenging and winning trophies.

How can you not put John Stones in there. His newfound ability to carry and distribute the ball on top of his defensive play allowed city to maintain their attack without weakening the defence. He’s a major part of the reason city turned their season around.
Wouldn't put him in midfield over KDB, Odegard or Rodri. Wouldn't put him in defence. That being said, I'm sure his premier league medal makes him sleep much better than not being named by these two

For me Alisson has to be in goal, Liverpools stand out player this season. Liverpools defence and midfield has been shambolic at times but Alisson has almost raised his game.

Just check Man City’s defensive record after the World Cup, when Dias was injured, and compare them when he came back. He definitely deserves a spot.
I'd have found a place for John Stones somewhere in the team. He has been outstanding this season, in a couple of roles to boot.

Players such as Shaw, Martinez and Varane deserve a mention in defence. Utd have the most clean sheets this season and have conceded the least amount of goals (8) at home.

It’s very annoying when they look at players as just goals and assists metrics. Saka was been u believable in games even when he hasn’t scored, he’s been key to his team playing above their level. I’m an MUFC fan by the way.

He’s the only source for goals , all the set pieces. Whereas arsenal spread the goals
Saka and Martinelli were doing great and their team's momentum helped them a lot. On the other hand, Salah and Kane did exceptionally well even though their team struggled. So, I am with Jamie here, as much as I think Saka and Martinelli did great, if you replace them with Salah and Kane in that Arsenal team, they would do even better.

@@samking5101 not at all, no different to what multiple keeper's do week in week out. Alisson is overhyped because of the team he's played in and cos he is decent at distribution... he makes way too many mistakes and for me, when it comes down to making saves he just doesn't do it enough
Bruno Guimares is worth a mention. I agree with midfield of Rodri, KDB & Odegaard. Saliba is defo in. I am not sure if Dias shud be in at CB, as he has been out of the City team for a fair amount of time.

RB - Trippier (So hard not to put Trent after his move into midfield but this dudes had a crazy season)
CDM - Rodri (Obviously)
CM - Odegard (Class)
CM - De Bruyne (Legend)
L - Martinelli (Baller - Put great pressure from the front and honestly can say this was his breakthrough season - Rashford close second)
CF - Haaland (Robot)
R - Salah (I'd have put in Kane but basing this team on a 4 3 3 formation)

Centre back you could argue a case for Botman, Varane, Mee, Mingz, Akaniji, Over Saliba
Kane if you play a 4 4 2 but I prefer the 4 3 3 with One Proper Target Man.
And the keeping. Raya, De Gea, Pope all could have a say. But personally Allison made Liverpool be where they are otherwise they'd have been with Chelsea down low. lol

if you're talking stats, callum wilson is basically on the same level as salah is now, so you could argue that he should be there instead.

Saka does a lot more defensively than Salah. Martinelli tracks back way more than Rashford. Goals and assists are your primary target but when they're close, defensive contribution should settle it
Salah always tracks back too. He’s normally one of the first ones back when liverpool get countered from corners etc.

The Salah stat vs Saka performance argument is a conversation that needs to be had in more depth (not specifically about those players). Messi/Ronaldo have led to stat based opinions and it needs reigned in a bit. Arsenal will finish 2nd, Liverpool 5th. Saka and Martinelli contributed more than just G's and A's to a great season.
The underlying stats still say salah has been better but for me if saka played for Liverpool this season he gets no where near what salah has done. That's how I look at it

Salah scored a few pens, tap ins etc. The arsenal wingers played some magical football at times. In terms of performance, the arsenal boys > Salah, but Kane > arsenal boys, some of Kane’s touches, shots, goals, assists were fantastic to watch even as an Arsenal supporter. I’m convinced put Kane into City or Madrid and he scores 40+ a season.

Yes he’s been missing in our last couple games but the damage had already been done. I’m not blaming him but defensively he’s been found out many times even in games we’ve won

Gary spot on with Saka and Martinelli. You can't foprget what they did for more of less literally the whole season where Arsenal led the entire division. Salah hasn't been that great for Liverpool this season and Rashford only started after the World Cup!

Yeah they conceded high in a few games, but they’ve conceded less than 10 at home and have already won most clean sheets with 2 games left to play… Casemiro has also transformed the team and Rashford has 40 g/a this season. They’ve also played the most games of any team in Europe with terrible squad depth, so ten hag not making the manager of the season shortlist of 6 despite top 4, carabao cup and fa cup final in his first season is a disgrace.

Although personally I'm a facts (thus stats, in this case) driven person, so Jamie's front 3 look better on paper, I believe Gary's front 3 make more sense from a tactical / realistic point of view.
It's a bit counterintuitive, but the reasons are simple:
- Haaland, in both Pep's team and Gary's one, works best as the single pure striker, surrounded by either forwards or wingers, hence it's Haaland vs Kane and the choice is obvious this season
- having more than one pure stiker in a front 3 actually decreases their output since they are usually dead hands waiting to receive the ball, i.e. converting chances instead of creating them
- while Kane and Salah have great stats considering the state of their teams, it's easier to look better if you're the only one doing something while your team is otherwise in shambles
At best it could be Salah, Haaland and one of Martinelli / Saka on the other side, but not Haaland and Kane at the same time since they have a similar profile. Similarly, I wouldn't play De Bruyne and Odegaard at the same time, as the 4-3-3 needs a defensive midfielder (Rodri, the obvious choice), an attack minded midfielder (De Bruyne / Odegaard) and another more "neutral" midfielder to keep the balance (think the Xavi / David Silva / Gundogan type). This of course depends on who you play in other positions, but no coach would ever play with as many as 5 attacking minded players like in Jamie's team, no matter how good their stats are - a wise balance between the defensive and attacking parts is key to a healthy team, and you have to cover the flanks properly.
It's a very tough choice between Rodri and Gundogan imo. I may even have to have Gundogan in there instead of Oodegard

Honestly Lisandro Martinez should get a shout. He's a huge reason United are where they are, and that their goals against isn't higher. And we took some absolute thrashing this season.
Shaw as well, been a rock at LB and CB. But that's the price of the City and Liverpool games, left a stain on an otherwise good season.
Still got 2 teams above you with a better defensive record and arsenal are only 1 goal conceded more but without the drubbings you’ve received. You can see why the defence would mainly consist of the teams with the best defensive records.

9- Salah the best out there even in a season when he wasn't so good.
10- I could have gone for Rashford but I think Saka just edges him because Rashford has had quite a few matches playing as a CF as well.
11- Kane over Haaland 10000% for me. Kane plays football. Haaland averages about 20 touches/game. He just gets wonderful deliveries towards him.

Hear me out. Salah's season has been poor because he can't dribble, he keeps misplacing passes and his finishing at times is horrendous. Now you'll ask me how can he's finishing be horrendous when he has 30 goals? Well let me explain it's simple. Mohammed Salah is a very intelligent and talented forward, he knows how to be in the right place at the right time for an opportunity to score. Salah has had so many opportunities because of that he should have scored this season but missed horribly, I'm talking about 1 v goalkeepers he should have scored. And even if we don't mention the 1 v 1's he goes for many games without scoring then scores a brace or a hattrick then goes many games without scoring till that has changed now at the end of the season since he is scoring in many games now. This is why Salah has had a bad season he is bad for many games then shows up for one game then bad for many games. That is why Saka has had a better season because his goals and assists helped his team to win many games in a row so Arsenal could compete for the title.
