  • Becoming one of the biggest breakout acts of the mid 90's is no easy feat...but to sustain that momentum in the new millennium is a different achievement entirely. Return of Saturn saw No Doubt move away from their ska-pop sound and begin to integrate new wave influences into their more ballad-heavy sound. Lead vocalist Gwen Stefani, with 5 years of success in the rearview, was now free to reflect on her priorities and desires outside of the band. Arguably, Return of Saturn is No Doubt's most pivotal release, signaling a major transition for the band and foreshadowing Gwen Stefani's exaltation in the sphere of pop legend status.

I love Return of Saturn. An underrated gem. Magic in the make-up and Comfortable Lie are great tracks. Thanks for this mini doc.

''oops didn't work with Glen Ballard (biggest producer at the time), let's try pop". And it worked at the end.

Once Gwen figured out that shes bigger than them, it didn't take long for that band to unravel.

And her solo work is mostly terrible.

*Once the band realized they were ready to get married to their partners and start families, it didn’t take long for the band to decide to mutually part ways and for the longest two members (Gwen & Tony) to collaborate on a solo record as a creative experiment. There. Fixed it for you.

@islandmank here's more in the right than you are.
This idea of her being 'great' falls flat in the face of reality of her results. Has she truly had it in her, then last 20 years period would not be about Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift; it would have been about Gwen Stefani. I don't follow any of this stuff, yet I can immediately recognize Rihanna or Katy Perry when I hear them. Gwen, I only recognize as a face and voice of No Doubt. Everything else, in terms of influence and longevity, is practically non-existent.
You may disagree with that other comment, feel it to be wrong, whatever: she's better off as described in it, than in your OC.

What bothers me with me this band is the singles are good, the rest of their records is mostly bad.

I mean I generally disagree with you here. I actually enjoy a lot of the deep cuts on Tragic Kingdom and Return of Saturn, much more so than the big singles, but I appreciate your perspective on their career, and I have a feeling that the general public agrees with your sentiment
