    Worked perfectly! I haven’t used my mower in 2 years. I changed the fuel, oil, air filter, spark plug and it still wouldn’t run. I was about to take it to a local shop but luckily found this video first. I clamped the fuel line, removed the bowl, cleaned the o-ring, poked the nozzle with a small gauge wire, put everything back together and it immediately started! Thank you!!!

      @@jaycustomzz9921I have both a self propelled Craftsman 21” mower and a Troy Bilt 21” push mower each with a Honda engine. In both cases the specifications for the spark plugs and gaps are included in the owner’s manual. They are to use NGK plugs. I would heartily recommend using the OEM brand for your mower.😮Otherwise you can go on line to a major retailer or manufacturer and give the brand and serial number. We have far fewer mower choices and suppliers in Canada especially for replacement blades.

    Man, THANK YOU for this video. I’ve had this lawnmower for about five years; three years ago I watched some obscure video that’s not on TH-cam anymore on how to clean a carburetor because mine stopped starting. Fast forward to today, and I just about dislocated my shoulder trying to get the stupid thing to start! Your video was easy to follow and concise, and it fixed my problem perfectly. I always mix 2 ounces of Sta-Bil in with the 5 gallons of regular gas for the mowers whenever I fill the container up no matter what season it is. When the mower gets put up for the winter it always gets run dry, I’ve never had any carb issues at all. Pretty easy to do, as per the instructions 1 ounce of Sta-Bil for every 2 1/2 gallons of gas.

    That was a great fix. I like the Briggs with the jet in the bowl nut, easy to clean, I usually shoot some carb cleaner up the emulsion tube when I have the bowl off. No matter how many times I tell my customers to use non-ethanol gas, they still use regular with ethanol. I have one customer with a JD riding mower and he said," I use high test gas" and I told him that he needs ethanol free gas. Some people just don't get it. But it keeps me busy. Many thanks for the video.

    I now use Chevron premium gas with 94 octane. I started the mower every 3-4 weeks during storage over 2 years. When ready to use the mower again I put in a new air filter, spark plug, changed the oil and put in new gas. It started okay but was surging slightly and the mistake I made was to tip it on the air filter side to clean the deck. It was hard to start again and gas leaked out of the filter. It also smoked a lot and didn’t run well. I cleaned the deck, put more fresh gas in and it now works fine. The mower is a Troy Bilt with a Honda 160 cc engine.

    There is something else to look for: In my case the reason the lawnmower didn't start was a loose cable bracket that is located on the handle (follow the bycicle like cable that gets pulled with the lever at the top of the handle to a bracket where the cable gets into a sleeve). This bracket was loose so even when the lever was pulled to start the lawnmower, the cable didn't pull enough to move the required lever in the engine to allow it to start . Used a couple of zipties to hold it in place and the mower worked again.

    Yes, I use 87 octane high-quality ethanol mix gas. By high-quality, I mean Exxon, BP, Shell, and the like. I put Stabil in any gas that will sit for an extended length of time. The varnish and gums that people are finding in the float bowl of engines that have been sitting isn't from ethanol. It's from the gasoline evaporating and leaving deposits. Varnish and gum deposits have been a problem since long before ethanol was added to gas.

    I have to say, generally these self help videos are hit & miss for me. Usually because I'm afraid I will mess something up or not have the parts I need to fix it. And sometimes getting the parts isn't worth it when the machine is too old. That was the case with 2 weed eaters I threw out recently.
    But my mower is not that old, and it looked like it should have started, but just wouldn't.
    I decided to try the steps in this video. It seemed that bolt inside the bulb was clogged. I had to use a needle because nothing else would go in there. Put it all back together and it started in one pull! I couldn't believe it. Now, I can add small engine repair to my jack of all trades resume. 😁
    I think I will look into getting this gasoline additive you talk about. It seems the E- gas is definitely a problem.

    I hate my dad's troy bilt. He's got a TB110. We've replaced the spark plug, carb, ignition coil, ensured everything is properly hooked up and seemingly functioning correctly at the carb. Valves checked out, it's got compression.
    I got it to run for a second by dripping a bit of gasoline into the carb intake, which is the first time it's run since 4-5 months ago, but otherwise, simply cannot figure out what the issue is. There is fuel in the carb so it's making it there. The previous carb didn't look bad either. Dad said he was mowing, went inside for a drink, came out 20 minutes later and it wouldn't start anymore.
    He's told me it'll be the last gas powered mower he'll ever own. I guess I'm getting it.

    Very well done and informative video, but I would just say that when a small engine won't start after sitting for an extended period the culprit is almost certainly bad fuel. So why not drain the tank and see if it will run with fresh gas before going to the trouble of taking anything else apart?

    If my local gas stations would actually offer non-ethanol, I would definitely run that in my equipment. Sadly, I'm stuck with E10 anywhere I go. Even the higher octane fuels around here have ethanol in them, so I can't even resort to them. Sure, there's things like Trufuel, but I just can't personally justify the extra cost vs. taking extra precautions and putting a shutoff valve on anything I won't be using for longer than two weeks.

    I found out that the modern Troy-Bilt mowers have a rusting problem, people have reported their mower decks rusting out in less than two years. That is one reason why I don’t like these mowers

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometime people mow when the grass is damp and that will make them rust out even faster.

    I use E10 10% ethanol gas in mowers with ethanol stabilizer and run dry at end of season

    My daughter is staying with a girl and we tried to mow her grass today (has been raining so much, has been hard to do). Anyway, the holder for the air filter is missing (air filter as well), white stuff on the end of rhe spark plug (the boot part you put on plug) and since we added gas, it won't stay running. It has a mulching bag (we emptied it out and scraped the grass off the bottom). It doesn't have a primer button (unless the red handle is it) and it won't stay running now... Suggestions? I have no idea when it was last serviced.

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't run it without an air filter, because stuff might get in the engine. As for why it won't stay running, there could be water in the gas, or the carb could have a clog in and would need to be cleaned and cleared.

I took the muffler off and put it back on (that temperature lever had me take the whole damn cover off!) A bad muffler wouldn't stop it from running, correct? It doesn't have an electric start. I drained the old gas, sprayed cleaner in the tank and put new gas in. Any other recommendations? This machine looks just like yours, but has a "self propel" feature.

      when you say "flap" do you mean the choke flap? That's the brass flap near the opening of the carb, right behind the air filter? If so, you'll have to take off the plastic engine cover and look to see if something is interfering with the choke system
