- This is a really insightful interview and very relevant after the recent #GetBack documentary. Ringo says he had "3 frustrated drummers" by the time they got to record "Let it be". I don't know how other Beatle fans feel about this but I think all of The Beatles were very consistent in how they describe the Breakup, not much has changed over the years. This is a video from my previous channel so I'm unsure of the date/year but I'm going to have a guess at the year I was born - 1975. Once I get into my old computer I've got everything stored so I SHOULD be able to tell you all the exact date.
As of this week I will be uploading 2 videos per week until January the 10th 2022. Then I'll be uploading videos and my new podcast here to this channel, I'll also be opening the podcast on Spotify with some extras!!! Later next week I'll be uploading my first video in my new studio so you can all see what I look like and get familiar with me, I feel like as Beatlemaniacs we're all part of the same family. The main Beatle Stories channel was terminated in April due to copyright issues with YokoOnoOfficial. Only today was I told that that channel will not be coming back 🤷♂️.
I'll be uploading every single video and interview with the lads I have over the next 2 years so I won't be able to monetize my channel. It's taken time to buy a new computer and rearrange a bedroom into a Beatles decorated studio, add that to how long I've waited for TH-cam and YokoOnoOfficial and you'll understand why I've been away for so long.

That has got to be the most honest and straight forward interview about the Beatles breakup that I have ever heard from ANY of the Beatles. Well done Ringo.

Although he also left the band for some time - I believe that it's fair to say that Ringo had little to do
with the breaking up of The Beatles. He comes across as a hard working drummer that was always
there for his band mates. Even his family were the sweetest of people.
To me it seems like Ringo brought a lot of good will, humor and good behaviour that stems from his
upbringing - to the band.

The thing about Ringo that stood out to me in "Get Back" was how he knew exactly what to play on every song, without much direction from Paul or John or George. It seemed to me that Ringo always jumped right in with the right beat to fit the song.
@@Paul71H Wasn't Ringo the best or most professional of them (in some ways or fashion)? He had played at Butlin's, and was already an acknowledged success when they poached him. The other 3 often seemed to kind of hack their way through (and beautifully, of course). To me, he was Better than the Best, he was The Ringo Man.

As a fellow drummer I can say that Ringo is a fantastic, creative drummer that doesn't get the recognition he deserves
LOL.... As a guitarist I started paying more attention to Ringo as a drummer when I listened more closely to a few of the Beatles songs - how Ringo mixes the beat it in Let it Be for example - and I've just finished watching the "Let It Be" Jackson doco and I've got a new found respect for his ability to throw in enough diversity with just a few beats. Great drummer.
It always kinda annoys me when people call someone an "underrated drummer", because there is no such thing as an underrated drummer, because they're all underrated. Drummers and bassists almost *never* get the recognition they deserve (espescially drummers) for how much they contribute to a band. It's really quite sad, but then again, I think it's really just natural. In most bands, the lead singer gets like 90% of the recognition, simply because a singers voice is what stucks with most people and what interests the general punlic the most.

@@DrummerJay74 I disagree. I would argue that there is no "most important part" in a band. A band is always a very complex interplay between every part involved. If you subtract any of that it stops working. Sure, nothing goes without drums, but the same could be said for lead guitar (obviously only in rock music that is). I'm a guitarist those tend to make fun of bassists, but bassists do the same to guitarists. It's all just very childish.
It’s common knowledge the singer is always the most significant.
Any of the other parts could be copied by a decently trained artist.
Ringo’s recollections are some of the most unbiased that I’ve ever heard concerning the Beatles. I’m inclined to believe his interpretations of the events. He has nothing to gain compared to the other guys. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that the other guys interpretations are incorrect. I just think that Ringo has the least to defend when it comes to events mentioned.
Because Ringo was for the group and not for Ringo he was always okay with the decision made by the other three.
It's still just his perspective though. You need all 4 perspectives to see how each Beatle felt about the situation.

Although Ringo should be the most bitter. He was playing in a perfectly fine, successful band (Rory Storm and the Hurricanes) when the lads lured him to join their group. Then they break up just a few years later, leaving Ringo with nothing!

Imagine being an only child and then living a crazy life with three other men? He has so much love for them. It affected him a lot afterwards because it was all he knew. I love him sm. ⭐️✌🏼❤️

@@mvl6827 He has said, had he not joined the Beatles he would have stayed with Rory until that petered out then in another band. He said once when they were just hitting North America fame that he might buy a hair salon or a string of them once they weren’t popular anymore but he’d merely own them & still play the drums in some band.

Ringo was the BEST drummer they ever had. His timing was legendary; and in my humble opinion he was their musical and band anchor. He's so much more important than many people even today can grasp his influence during the 'fab years.' BEATLES 4EVER!!!!
They only had two drummers.
Paul played drums on some tracks and Ringo was just OK. John was the foundation, but Paul was the overall most talented - but he NEEDED John or else they would have had many, many quirky songs.

Ringo has such an amazing grasp of the feel, love, climate and at times rough waters of the band. It's so sincere and honest. I think each of the fab four did. There was this mutual protection, yet deepest honesty as well. That is special. The Beatles were special. They changed my life as well as a generation of fans, as did a whole explosion of talented artists. The Beatles were simply a hub on the more pop end of it. Amazing and filled with magic. You could see by Let it Be, they just wanted to break free of the walls, and get on with their own thing. Their time for all practical purposes was perfect.

Love listening to Ringo talk about the musical life they all shared. Lennon and McArtney were the stars, but George and Ringo are my favorite Beatles.
Ringo was very underrated for what he did. He was a left handed drummer playing right handed kit. He didnt have to just figure out how to play what they wanted, but also put in fills to cover his playing left handed with a right handed kit. Keep time and make it sound right. Not easy to do. I also heard he could do it, take after take after take playing it the same way.
Ringo was the down to earth glue of the Fab Four

@@walktheworld Somehow I don't think you "Got it". How about the fact the band had an agreement that all four bandmates would have to approve something or it would be nixed. Paul did not agree to hire Allen Klein but the other three hired him anyway, much to their dismay. It was three against one in the end but not the way you portray.

John Lennon remembered the past differently each time, Paul lied to keep up a front, Ringo was drunk all the time can't even remember. Only George spoke with honesty about those times.

White Album was mostly written in Rishikesh, India, (the beginnings), so it had a powerful spiritual influence from the Maharishi's meditation retreat.
It was evident that it was over by the time Let It Be was done. Thank God they were able to keep it together so they could give us Abbey Road. That was truly their masterpiece!
According to Geoff Emerick's book they didn't really keep it together for Abbey Road. He said John didn't come to the studio unless they were going to work on one of his songs that day, so there are several songs on the album on which he does not appear at all.
They each had important strengths and weaknesses, but beyond Ringo (he would have stayed in any case, had they wanted to stay together with the others), despite the love I have for John and George, only Paul had "understood" that together the four of them were far more (enormously more) than the sum of the parts, a miracle (...). Their solo careers, however good, are careers like those of other great authors sure, the Beatles are beyond anything else.
Yeah maybe John and George understood it, but had enough of the situation. I was thinking, what if when George left the band and said, "Get Eric" (Clapton), that they did. Then said, "We're going to do an album then take some time for solo projects, then get back together to record another album." I wonder how that supergroup would have worked out?

He was great on Thomas the Tank Engine. Made watching kid's shows easier. He is cool with a great voice. His early 70s singles were pretty good too.

hearing this interview reminds me of something i'd heard about ringo being the oldest member of the beatles and also had a prior good career before he met the boys which is probably why he didnt get too frustrated about what the other lads did, they were much younger than him but they still were like his brothers
Maria M John was only 3 months younger, but Ringo was definitely the mellow older brother type. All the wives claimed he was the most Beatle-y of the 4.

When the Beatles hired Ringo, they wanted him so bad they payed him more than they were marking.

I believe Ringo when he says he would have stayed with the band. He had no real reason to want to leave. And indeed, Ringo was the only one who worked publicly with all three of the others after the break-up. His song Early 1970 pretty much summed up his view of the situation at the time.
George was going through a bitter breakup when he quit too.

I still think that they all ganged up on Paul. If he was ‘bossy’ it’s because he was basically trying to keep them together. Lennon later admitted this, and that Paul was right about Klein. I think they were all very snide about him - particularly George.
They were there. It was their experience, not yours. I think they had a better idea of things than some fan on the internet.
As a native from Liverpool I grew up in the surrounding areas around Woolton where the Beatles got together and it’s always pleasing to hear and see new footage like this. Btw I’m loving the new ‘Get Back’ series on Disney, I’m up to the 3rd part and loving it all. Peace & Love ❤️

Another indication that the "Get Back" documentary was sanitized. Lots of interviews, especially of George, Ringo, and George Martin, that testified to the fact that during that time things were very tense. It was never as bad as people thought, but certainly not as good as portrayed on the "Get Back" film.
I don't think it was "sanitized"? Mark Lewisohn listened to all the tapes from January and said all the fighting and arguing everyone seemed to remember wasn't there. If they were fighting all the time it didn't get captured on audio or video.
I loved how Ringo makes his point in a conversation--his hands aid in stressing a point like how he makes use of his hands when playing drums.
If John had lived, I would put money on them getting back together. They were quite similar and all smart people.
Agree, a stellar summation by the ringed one. The Beatles were rock solid till the end, and then each Beatle gave us at least 2 great albums in the ensuing few years. What more could anyone want. They were magical together and evolved further on their own. The whole world can be grateful. I am for sure.
At 3:45 , Ringo sounds so much like George when saying the "well I'm a guitarist, I'll play the solo" bit
I can’t believe Ringo was in the hospital for TB and perhaps pneumonia for 2 years as a child and later did all that smoking,drugging,cocaine etc… and is still alive at 81 today!Its so mind boggling!🚨
The Beatles for me were magical as singer/songwriters, performers and as individual personalities. They were a once in a life time team. I wish they could of grown old together like the Stones are doing. Oh' well, at least we have groovy memories.

@@davidread7492 It's true that breaking up at the height of their genius adds to their magic and intrigue, and had they still been making albums 20 or 30 years later some of that mystique would have been gone. But, and it's a big but, think of just how much incredible, legendary music was left unwritten and unrecorded as a result. We got a lot of great solo/post-Beatles stuff no doubt, but none of it could come close to what they were churning out (and no doubt would've continued to create for years to come) as a group, especially, IMO, from Rubber Soul in '65 on until the last note of Abbey Road.

By Let It Be, George had really grown up. He wanted to be seen as an equal. And wanted to be respected.
Ringo doesn’t mention it here when he talks about George feeling dominated by Paul, but I think a subtext between George and John/Paul, who went back together to their early teens when their age difference was more pronounced, is that they had a hard time adjusting to George as a full equal as a songwriter or bandmate because he was something of a younger brother to them. That’s not to dismiss the issues of how many songs on an album or instructing him how to play a solo, but I think those are just symptoms of the broader malady. I think that would have changed over time, speaking as an older brother who doesn’t often think of my little brother as “little” anymore; but then, we’re in our 40s now, so I can hardly blame George for not waiting for his “older brothers” to accept his growth, when he was at the height of his talents and abilities. They gave us ten phenomenal years, and then they grew apart. Nothing lasts forever. I only wish John and George had gotten more time to share their gifts through whatever projects they’d have chosen in later years.

Get Back proved Ringo was the necessary backbone to the Beatles. I loved when Linda said “ I feel the most comfortable around Ring”. She called him Ring.
Ringo says he had "3 frustrated drummers" ; Unfortunately all of us guitar players are frustrated drummers. Ringo is a great drummer. As a working musician I can tell you I NEVER used a drummer who couldn't play like Rings. In fact, I can tell you the only drummers I ever knew who put Rings down were ALL non-working drummers.
The young lads of the early 60s had gone by the end of the 60s. They were more mature and had started to go their own way in life and in their music.
Like a lot of us they weren’t hanging out with their teenage friends they were establishing their own circle of friends and colleagues. In my own case by my late twenties I wasn’t hanging out with my teenage friends anymore. I didn’t fall out with my old friends we just went different paths, although now in my fifties I’m in touch with some of them again, sadly this came about after going to a friend’s funeral and meeting up again there.
The Beatles were no different to many in that respect but they also had intense outside pressures tearing at them and crushing them such as the financial issues, the loss of Brian and the press trying to incite trouble by blowing rumours up into stories of fights etc as can be seen in get back.
If John hadn’t been murdered in NY I think we may have seen more collaborations in the 80s such as a one off performance at Live Aid, but without John it could never happen
I still say The Beatles career is a cross between a Monty Python movie and the bible. It's very hard to believe what they achieved, it's all a bit crazy, but you've gotta have faith 🙏

As we've all learned more of what it actually took to be Beatle, I think many recognise the essential requirement to have a crazy sense of humour to keep grounded. When John spoke later about the positives of the break up, John was pleased most with the success of Ringo Starr.
John was pleased most with Ringo's success because he was worried about how he would do on his own. John stated (as a comparison) that he wasn't worried about Paul because he knew Paul would do well in his solo career.
Woww..! Ringo is spelling it out in the most truthful way....It was such a blitzkrieg career and such intense work ethic and God like fame pressures for many years that it became hard to survive being a Beatles for all of thems.

It would have been great if they could have got it together circa 72-74 to record a George heavy Beatles record with maybe only 1 or 2 Lennon/McCartney tracks with the band making George front & centre for once. It's like the unmade Monty Python's World War 3 (1985-89) that would have been Eric Idles turn to direct after nearly 20 years of Python movies being directed by Terry Jones & Terry Gilliam. George & Eric were never allowed their moment in the sunlight in that way & it's a shame
I've said this before but I think you get a more balanced account about what went on with the band from Ringo because he didn't join until they were ready to record. He knew them in Hamburg and sat in at the Cavern but he didn't go through that band dynamic early on, all the politics and power-struggles that are part of the growing pains for every band. I was in a few, obviously nothing compared to them, but I imagine the birth pangs are the same for all of them. I was never in a band that could really get past them that is why I gave up and just gigged with different people over the years. I couldn't handle the ego trips, and that is at the club/hall level. Think of the politics of The Beatles. Anyway, I think Ringo, because he was brought in to finish the group, approached it in more of a job-like manner. Again, I'm not insinuating it was just a job to him, but he may have a better detachment than the rest. By 1969 George had been playing Lennon/McCartney stuff for a very long time. I can see where he was wary, and as he himself later pointed out, quite content not being fab when it finally did come crashing down. I will say this. I love em all but Ringo comes off as a bit more down to Earth. But that's just my take on it.
Great points! But I also think Ringo knew his “job” was as drummer. He was the rock of the group. Steady! Even-keeled. I’m a younger fan of the band but the moment where they discuss the death of “Mr. Epstein” was very telling. He was the leader of their band and helped guide them. Once he was gone, new dynamics emerged and the guys didn’t know how to handle them.
@@HarrisonHollers Ringo's drumming is very understated and underrated in some circles. The drumming on "She Said" and "Here Comes the Sun" stand out most for me. The drums really make those songs. And you are right about Brian Epstein. John said when Brian died the Beatles stopped being a band.
As much as Ringo was a Beatle, I believe he was the only Beatle that could look from the outside in. John, Paul and George were in it, and never had the Ringo Luxury of looking form outside in. And Yes, Ringo in Here comes the Sun, he actually made the song brilliant, in my opinion.
And BTW, I am not a musician, but I have been listening to the Beatles for over fifty years, Ah,.., that's over half a century now. Goood Night.
@@shanepasha6501 That's the beauty of the Beatles, you don't need to be a musician to appreciate their sound. Early on their energy carried them, then their songwriting flourished, then they became studio innovators, then they moved on. But they were never static or stale. I go back more than 50 years with them as well. They made me love music and are the reason I learned to play. Other artists had a greater influence as far as my style of playing went, but the Beatles were like that first girlfriend for me. They held a place in my heart no one else could occupy. Isn't being a Beatlemaniac cool?
You've got 2 all-time geniuses, 1 great songwriter and guitarist, and a great drummer. Naturally the drummer is going to have his feet closest to earth.
That's the great thing about Ringo. Zero bullshit. They were all more or less like that but not to the extent that he was.

There's lots of debates about Beatle this and Beatle that bit the one thing that's true is Ringo was the glue.
If Ringo was as humble as the other 3 the band would never have lasted! Thank God he wasn't.

George and John talked about doing solo work but still doing work as the Beatles. They never said anything to Paul about it, George says they should have just brought it up to Paul. They would have made more music together. how sad.
Ringo is totally right!! The guys wanted start as solist, they had their own families. George wanted to play his own songs. But at the beginning, all 3 Beatles were upset with John bringing Yoko always to the Studio, because they had that rule, anybody had to interfere with the rehearsels and recordings of the songs. Even George Martin was uncomfortable, he told once that John didn't introduce her to him. And John put a bed for Yoko in the Studio. 😡😖🤔
@PGH Engineer Actually, if you’ve seen the Get Back documentary, the other Beatles were understanding and accepting of Yoko (and Linda Eastman) in the studio.

It's "The Beatles" sessions in 1968 where Yoko's presence was getting on their nerves. First of all, John's still married to Cynthia and has a son with her named Julian. George and Paul have known Cynthia since John began a relationship with her. Now here you are, 10 years later, seeing this dude shacking up with another woman, bringing her into your work environment, while you have to pretend everything's ok. And it's not like Yoko Ono was a quiet, demure, wallflower was she. She had a reputation already in New York and London art circles. John FORCING everyone to deal with his infidelity, and bringing that into the studio where OTHER people have just as much right to work in an environment without that kind of stuff being brought into THEIR lives. It was incredibly selfish to make everyone else show up "to work" and bringing that kind of drama in with you. How were Ringo, George and Paul supposed to face Cynthia? Or even acknowledge this is going on. But the kind of man Lennon was, was the kind of man who asks his friend Pete Shotton to tell Cynthia she's been divorced. He didn't even have the balls to do it himself. And then left Cynthia and Julian with a one off payment, and bye bye.
No one showing up to work should have to deal with that. It would be like you bringing your wife/girflriend into the office with you. She doesn't do any work with you or for you. She just sits there, all day long. And everyone else has to figure out why the hell you're bringing her into work with you, and why they have to have their day disrupted for your fascination with her. Very obvious she was used as a reason to get out of The Beatles. Very manipulative.
And any band that can get Ringo Starr to quit, tells you that band is fucked up.
@@DrTomoculus but Yoko did contribute to a few of John's Beatle songs from that period especially the song Because, the melody was devised by her because she had accidentally played Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata backwards. People forget she is a classically trained pianist. Also Linda was using the bed as well, their are pics of Linda and Yoko in the bed together. One was injured, the other was pregnant

On the GetBack documentary, you have George leaving, but not much conflict aired otherwise. After hearing multiple interviews about that time, it is clear that the GetBack documentary was cleaned up. It wasn't as happy or fun time as portrayed during those 8 hours of footage.

With Get Back you can actually see Paul directing him on how to play (John actually tries to get him to stop during Let it Be - I think its why he says "Let it B, C, D and E" to break Paul's attention from telling Ringo how to play it) and see all three take a seat behind Ringo's kit. Fascinating to hear this and watch that.

There you go. “We were married with our own families, older, and wanted to do our thing.” Still, they could have taken the time off to do their respective things, then come back and put out an album every few years. It would have been nice to hear their sound develop over the 70’s.
They probably would have done some stuff in the 80s if John hadn't been murdered. They all still liked each other and all the other stuff they needed to get done in their lives would have kinda been out of the way.
