LDX has officially talked about Shadow's feet for a longer runtime than any of his video series combined. Take this information and do with it what you will.
If I'm not mistaken the reason SA2 Shadow's animation is the most fluent and looks the best is because Sega hired an actual pro roller skater or ice skater and had them wear a mo-cap suit for movies so they could capture the seamless and fluent movement of a human skating and just copy and paste it to Shadow's character model directly. I don't know if they mo-capped Sonic's running animation too or not you might need to look that up, but if they did it would explain why it looks so good also. I agree 110% that Shadows skating animation in SA2 is the best and always will be. However, in recent years I've thought about it more and more and I think a hybrid of Shadows animation from SA2 and from Forces would be pretty nice for an all-around animation. When Shadow starts out skating and is actively building speed he uses his SA2 animation but once he reaches top speed he can slow down and take slow/precise strides to maintain his top speed. I think Shadow's walking animation starting from a standstill in SA2 is really wonky looking back at it, especially when he takes his first few strides without his hover boots emitting any thrust (this is very evident every time you go to the kindergarten with Shadow and he is skating down the brick path to the schoolhouse). It would be better for him to just run and then once he reaches a certain speed transition directly into skating. Sonic also has a terrible walking animation in SA2 when he first starts moving compared to how great it was in SA1, I don't know how they messed it up in SA2. I also do not like Sonic heroes running animations simply because the animation is so fucking lazy, Shadow's skating is the worst offender of this and its very easy to spot the problem once you notice it. Shadows skating animation in heroes is one speed, it does not increase or decrease proportionally to his speed like it did in SA2 which made it so nice. So you can be running along in the game and Shadow will be chugging along at the same pace and sometimes it does not match how fast you are actually moving in game, it's very disorienting to me. However I will give Heroes animations for Shadow credit where it is due, Shadow has a great walking animation and once he reaches a certain speed transitions right into skating, and he has actual rhythm in his movement compared to his extremely lazy and drawn-out animation in SOH.
14:12 what Shadow does is Hover by expelling air from his Shoes (Thus the name “Air shoes”) but by increasing the intensity he can create flame which he uses to attack rivals/enemies but it’s not enough to make him “fly” like people would think. Just wanted to point this out.

See, that's what I was thinking originally when I remembered they're called "air shoes" but SA2 & other games showing pure lights just caught me off guard a bit except for Sonic & the BK because, granted, I did jokingly say his shoes were futuristic, I still kept to consideration that since they're from that old time period, using light energy wouldn't make sense (since that seems more of a modern/futuristic type of technology), so using fire instead seemed more logical

SA2's animation was the only one that looks like he's run skating, that matches Sonic's running and feel or speed. All the others look like he's just skating. That's why SA2's is the best.
Just here to comment solidarity. SA2 skating animation and that character model is basically the best Shadow ever looked and felt and it’s been itching my brain basically my entire life. Heros and Shadow the hedging were off. But SA2B hits like Ike’s sword from Brawl

The maaain reason for Sa2 being the best is that the shoes are rocket propelled or energy? So it forces him to skate differently than someone on wheels, so the body sway isnt only cool but makes alot of sense !
Black Knight Shadow's animation is so close to being perfect, there's just not enough body swaying. I think top speed Black Knight is a reasonable compromise coming from SA2 tho
In all honesty, to me ALL of Shadow's skating animations are bellow-mid (ranging from "meh" to "ewww") after SA2. That game was peak in terms of running and jumping animations (and not just Shadow, but other characters too). Even model proportions were nailed just right, allowing for expressivity in movement, while also not being "lanky", and thus creating a great blend of modern skate/ graffiti/ hip hop like inspired aesthetics, AND the classic soul of the classics (Sonic CD's anime opening & ending has Sonic have the exact same proportions as his SA2 incarnation) There ya go OP, have a like and a long non-AI comment for the algorithm. Thanks for making this. It has bothered me for years how goofy Shadow looks running (skating, whatever), compared to his debut in SA2. He looked so freakin' cool in SA2. I'm sad to see that in the upcoming Sonic X Shadow Generations they're continuing to lean into this stupid animation. What gives, man?
The “he’s the ultimate life form so ofc he flies” idea is very bad and poor to me. When it comes to talking about why he flies during his boost. Why does that mean he has to fly when he boosts? It’s just lazy is what it is. Who’s to say what makes u the ultimate life form means u have to fly? It would make sense if he was already a “super” being but he’s not. If he couldn’t be upgraded/have a super form, then I’d agree. But he does. Flying should be for that in his case. To make it more special and also again just not feel lazy. I could give 10 reasons on why he shouldn’t fly honestly. Lore wise too. This is just the ONE I chose. It’s bad and “the ultimate life form” isn’t an excuse for that.
