Heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos met for the co-main event of UFC on Fox 18 in Orlando, Florida. After a fairly inactive first round, Overeem stopped the fight at the end of the second round with a big left and hammer fists.
This marked eighth-ranked Overeem's 55th fight. The Dutch kickboxer has wins over Frank Mir, Brock Lesnar, Roy Nelson, and current heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum. Dos Santos was the No. 2-ranked UFC heavyweight going into the fight, with significant wins over former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, Frank Mir, Mark Hunt, and Stipe Miocic.
They dance around for an entire minute before dos Santos throws a leg kick-the first strike of the fight-that doesn't connect. Dos Santos throws a jab that doesn't connect and a right shortly afterward that also doesn't connect. They exchange kicks at the same time. Dos Santos throws a head kick that Overeem blocks and Overeem seems fine.
Overeem throws a knee to the body, and dos Santos follows with a jab. Dos Santos throws a leg kick. Overeem throws a leg kick and then lands a good left, causing dos Santos' nose to bleed. So far in this fight, there have been almost exclusively single strikes thrown-no combinations. Cigano throws a spinning kick Overeem is ready for, and he takes Cigano's back. He's looking to set up a takedown, but the round ends before he can.
Overeem starts the round by throwing an outside leg kick, but dos Santos throws a front kick directly to the groin, and the fight is halted. Time restarts after Overeem had time to recover, and they both start off throwing kicks. Overeem throws a body kick, followed by a leg kick that dos Santos checks. At 90 seconds into Round 2, the fight is still fairly inactive. Dos Santos throws a spinning heel kick that misses. The round continues with it's a slow pace, with infrequent strikes thrown.
Neither fighter appears to be taking much damage. Overeem lands a good left in a combination, opening up a cut on dos Santos' cheek. Dos Santos throws some strikes, backs Overeem up against the cage, and lands some body shots before Overeem can take the fight back to the center. Overeem lands a left hook right on dos Santos' jaw, snapping Cigano's head back. Cigano drops, and while he's not completely out, he's clearly hurt and dazed. Overeem's follow-up hammer-fists cause referee Dan Miragliotta to step in and stop the fight at 4:43.
In his post-fight speech, Overeem said, “Junior is a very dangerous opponent. He throws bombs. He throws strong, so we had to have a game plan and figure out his rhythm then slowly pick him apart. He's very dangerous and strong. I had to figure him out; I feel confident with the team around me. Thank(s) all of you guys. I feel confident for the next title shot.” - บันเทิง

Lowkey 2 of the top 8 heavyweights of all time going at it no one noticing.
This was considered a huge upset at the time since JDS only lost to Cain and was coming off a win over Stipe, while Overeem was 3-3 in his last six fights.
IF JDS didn't hesitant to throw punch he would win
The leg kicks set him up, was more worried about them and got clocked by a most likely roided out overeem.
At the time Cain had already taken jds soul
Alistair was a man worthy of a belt, yet luck eluded him. He had an extraordinary career. Similarly, Gegard Mousasi, fitting for a belt, left the UFC without ever strapping it on. Despite a winning streak, Dana never arranged a title match. It's crazy. Mousasi got frustrated and walked away.

The stopage might have been a bit early, but I doubt if JDS would've got out of the losing situation.

Off the juice right? The two got into two wars. You cant name another fight like jds vs cain 2 or jds vs cain 3 in terms of punishment and damaged absorbed. In the second fight cain took some damage and junior A LOT while in the third it was more or less the same for junior but in that one cain got a lot of damage too. Then junior had wars against hunt and miocic, winning against both of em. Cain suffered a severe back injury and junior had a shoulder injury caused by his notorious overhand right and eyelids surgery. Cain then lost his belt to werdum and junior lost to overeem. Then the rest is history... i think they have taken enough brain damage and injuries so let them live peacefully cuz they were and are the best heavyweights of all time followed by fedor overeem werdum and miocic.

Back in the days, people discredited Alistair, simply because he was not fighting in the UFC. Turns out him and other non UFC fighters were actually very good and in some instances better than UFCs best.
He was great at kickboxing and doing peds.

'cause Overeem's age is catching up to him and he can't fight at his usual level anymore, it's why he keeps losing to the big dogs but still beats the new younger talent of the UFC. Ngannou also messed his chin up even further and Rozenstruik gave him an injury to worry about.

Screw you and Alistair Woulvereen there both good competitors but atleast dos santos won a title and managed to defend overreems a great competitor to but neither should be disrespected they both did great things for this sport called MMA
there's a lot of idiots calling early stoppage. JDS was getting hammered and totally unresponsive, he was only able to roll to his knees after the ref separated them, great work by the ref.

Aside from the double entendre, "Reem" is better because it derives from his name. It's unique, as opposed to "Demolition Man," which is used by at least 12 other fighters. Besides, everyone on the forums and in comments was calling him "Reem," so he just went with it. It's like when Dan Henderson dropped "Hollywood" and started using "Hendo." It's more personal, more organic-a better nickname.
