UFC 131: dos Santos vs. Carwin was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on 11 June 2011 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
On January 11, 2011, the president of the UFC, Dana White, announced that dos Santos would be one of the coaches of The Ultimate Fighter Season 13, opposite Brock Lesnar. They were scheduled to face each other on June 11, 2011, at UFC 131, but Lesnar pulled out of the bout due to a recurrence of diverticulitis and was replaced by Shane Carwin. Dos Santos dominated Carwin and won the fight via unanimous decision, relying predominantly on his boxing skills, but showed more variety in his game by landing a couple of kicks and completing two takedowns in the third round.

EVERY single one of Shane Carwins wins were in the 1st round. It's a shame he retired after this fight. He only lost to Lesnar and JDS.

That fight should have been stopped in the first round undoubtedly. Shane took way too much unnecessary punishment. I just don't trust Herb Dean. Even Junior looked up to Herb as if "haven't I punished this guy enough, are you going to stop this fight or what?" Just a bad job of reffing by Herb. Shane was just taking cover and not fighting back. That's when the fight gets stopped.
Shane Carwin was a beast at that time. JDS was the only man able to punish him like that !!
Nobody on earth saw this coming. JDS was fresh meat, great momentum going in this fight. Even so, to absolutely wreck Carwin like this was just unbelievable. Shane never fought again after this.

This era is golden era of ufc heavyweight division
Heavyweight is genuinely the only division thats devolved in terms of athleticism and skill. Old era HW's are steamrolling through the modern division
JDS was way more elite of a boxer than Carwin. It showed tremendously in this fight.

They could have stopped it in round 1 when Shane went down from that right hand and took all those unanswered shots on the ground at the end of the round and got bloodied
