    The Allemande is supposed to end with a Picardy third, but at the end you switched it back to minor. Why? is there a different edition or something?

      Not really. Only the Partita D major and the b Minor suite from the clavier übung 2 sound French out of all of Bach‘s suites

    • @OmnipotentPotato
      @OmnipotentPotato ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@user-fu7zf4ck9z this is because they were the only pieces where Bach did not employ his own signature contrapuntal touch. The rest are inspirations by said style, but are influenced by Bach's own.

    please excuse my ignorance, i am a cellist: when you're performing these suites, are the voices separate in your head or are you mostly playing by muscle memory and not thinking about the voices?

    • @dibaldgyfm9933
      @dibaldgyfm9933 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question, I am not Paul, but play a lot and may have both voices as a sounding whole in my head. I played more violin as young and had great difficulty learning piano as voices, easier playing harmonies of all kinds with a melody on top. When I think melody on a piano I get frustrated because I can not intonate - you get the tone "served on a platter" but there it is. Therefore I had to learn to tune and do hammer adjustments (voicing).
      YES one has to completely readjust thinking when playing piano.

    • @afriendlymusician3829
      @afriendlymusician3829 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A common pitfall of a lot of pianists is that they play by muscle memory without considering the voices in their head. If you want success with Bach, thinking about each voice will bring more success rather than just playing the notes.

    • @PaulBartonPiano
      @PaulBartonPiano  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I haven't thought about this question before ... I'd say the voices are totally separate in my head. I never think of fingers.

    I don't want to be too petty, but why are you playing f instead of f sharp at the end of the allemande?

  • @marcocampus7943
    @marcocampus7943 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One thing I've always wondered about French suites: why, being named in this way, don't they have a prelude or an ouverture at the beginning, which are typically French?

    • @user-fu7zf4ck9z
      @user-fu7zf4ck9z ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bach never gave them that title. These were originally just 5 suites, the E Major suite later joined them. The English suites are more French than these 6 actually. The English suites I think were named like that by Altnickol because they were supposedly written for an English man. No one really knows why these became the French suites, but of the 3 suite collections (French, English and Partitas, which are also sometimes referred to as the German suites) Bach made, these are the easiest, so maybe they were written to practice ornaments in the French matter, but thats pure speculation

      @@zbigniewbrzezinski8869 I didn't like 'nonetheless' because it didn't convey my meaning as well as 'none the less' so it was intentional. 'None the less' seemed warmer to me. I guess this highlights how much language is like music and how subtle differences in language can more artistically convey our intentions.
