SCALES OF TRAINING - 6 WAYS TO SUCCEED IN DRESSAGE - (PART 1) | DMA TV EP 341

  • The scales of training are the stepping stones that riders live by when training dressage horses. Over the years and across a number of nations, all who produce and ride horses use these as their 'mantra'. They also form the basis of what judges look for in horses during the test.
    In your dressage journey, no doubt you will encounter challenges in your training. Your horse might be having problems with a particular exercise. For example, when asked to lengthen the trot, perhaps his stride becomes faster rather than longer. Or maybe he consistently picks up the wrong lead. For these problems and others, the diagnostic solution lies in the practical use of the Scales of Training. This is made up of six concepts-rhythm, suppleness, connection, impulsion, straightness and collection.
    This is part 1 of a 2 part series. Where we will show you how ANYONE can succeed in dressage, by following 6 simple steps.

    Right now I am applying your video series tips and tricks to a pretty little flashy chestnut mare = 4 yrs old, 14 hh show prospect, and she is loving all of your tips. I had a great dressage coach years ago, and her voice echoes though my mind while I ride, and now your voice joins her, lol. Your videos remind me of all the details or the how and why she instilled over many lessons, making this training especially easy to follow and understand making the training extremely smooth and successful. as your video series really sets both rider and horse. or in my case a pony, up for success...
    I love this so much!
    Thx again!!!

    I have never responded to a video but I felt I really should today. Principally to say thank you so much. I have been riding for many years at a very low level trying to fit riding around my very busy job. I retired two years ago and bought a lovely Dutch warmblood mare with a lovely kind temperament. I have had lessons for years and have only made modest improvement despite trying really really hard. I am just coming back from a 7 month layoff because I had an episode of serious illness and was wondering if I would carry on. I stumbled on to this video and the seat video and my riding dramatically improved in one ride ! I no longer want to give up and honestly think finally I can improve. I and my horse cannot possibly thank you enough.

    Brilliant! Loved this! Again, I've watched this a couple of times now, because the information is so comprehensive, so enormous, & integral, there's simply too much to really absorb, in one sitting! The fact that your knowledge is so extensive & you are so able to articulate & break it now, makes you a riding genius Alicia. Never come across anybody so capable. And the fact that you provide all these videos freely & openly, is amazing & FULLY appreciated! I just love your thinking. Thankyou thankyou thankyou YRS Team, both human & equine members! 👏👏👏😇🐎❤🙏

    I’ve got a sweet story for you. I’ve been rehabbing my 35 year old pony by using the training scale. I put her on a lead and begin to walk around the arena. I start counting her rhythm by glancing back at her hind legs and then I make a ten meter circle. I started smaller but she’s comfortable at 10 meters. She blows and chews. A real test came when the farrier came and she was comfortable holding her hind legs up for him to trim her feet. I think it had helped her balance! These are exciting changes for the little girl. Thank you so much!

    • @trouvaloo
      @trouvaloo ปีที่แล้ว

      I just realized she would lose her rhythm when I made the circle too small. She keeps her rhythm at ten meters, relaxes and enjoys her self.

    Wow I love this, so motivational. My horse was badly lame, tendon issue & had to have an op. After months of rehab i'm enjoying her again & riding her properly. Her strength & suppleness has improved so much. We've had a break through she goes on the bit & is able to propel herself from behind & come up to be more uphill, hard work is paying off & she herself is so comfortable in her way of going :)

      @@YourRidingSuccess So many takeaways!! Biggest: spending 75% of your time on the lower portion of the scale no matter your or your horses skill level. My four legged child is quite talented (I try to keep up) and it is tempting to spend a lot time working on the 'fun stuff'. I found (i think he did too) my next ride after watching this video more enjoyable, light hearted, fair, fun while focused on lower level of scale staying totally aware of how I could help him/us into the next movement. 🙂 So motivational, encouraging, & supportive videos. Love it! Thank you!

    In my mind you have completed the definition of the half halt in your discussion of contact/connection here. Originally I heard you answer the rider whose horse's head went up in downward transitions. You told her to start asking for the halt on the circle thus employing the half halt and not breaking the horses rhythm. I rode HJ and there was never a discussion of what the half halt is in the horses body (my understanding it was kind of a squeeze of the rein to say - hey horse we are changing gears so pay attention) but with your definition of what one should be looking for in the horses BODY the sit or coming under of the hind end through the engagement of the connected back and from there, yes, a multitude of things that can happen. Am I right? makes far more sense now. Apparently I was lucky when my old understanding worked ha ha or at least I was under the impression it was! Thanks! love your content.

    So this video is fantastic! So clear and helpful. Thank you. Best I have ever seen covering this content. I do have one question, I have been trying to look through videos to see if I can find if you have broken it down... but you talked in a video about the "square" of your seat movement when walking vs. Forward and back movement. I have never heard this before and I have been trying to figure it out via trial and error on my own... But it would be super awesome if you could explain that movement or do a video on it. Riding the walk properly is so hard... I find it the hardest... Especially to maintain any overtrack... And the forward... And the contact... And the correct rhythm... I feel like maybe this square thing that you're talking about is what I have been missing. Can you explain the mechanics to me? I would really appreciate it and I think it might help me a ton. Thank you!

    • @YourRidingSuccess
      @YourRidingSuccess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rachel, super question! Firstly I am so glad you enjoyed the training scale video. Excellent questions about the walk and yes we can absolutely do a video demonstrating it but best piece of advice I can give you is the walk IS the hardest pace as it has no natural forward tendency and the horse has the most balance as always 3 legs on the ground so it is more difficult than the trot and canter to influence the horse.

    Thank you for this! I appreciated the video examples, and sounds like there’s more to come, but I’d love to see really stark differences so it visually makes sense of what you’re explaining. Especially coming off of the Olympics recently and seeing top-notch dressage horses, would like to see what really green horses look like (but I think we’ll also see this as you work with Mowgli too!)! For rhythm: When you have a horse who has a really stiff, uncomfortable trot when she’s not through, how do you establish a good rhythm without contact? She often evades and sucks back, hollowing her back. Generally we just walk a lot if that happens and de-prioritize trot. It is difficult for me to set her up for success sometimes when her gait is rough because it causes me a lot of body pain, making it tough for me to ride with good form & precision. Thx

    Really awesome explanation! It’s going to be super insightful to see you riding the younger horses and talking about the training scale. Some great practical tips here which I feel is often lacking. I often find myself understanding the training scale but not knowing what to actually do (exercises, aids, etc.) when I’m riding to work on the training scale or solve problems I might be having, so it would be great to keep hearing those real world things!

    You are so good at explaining everything. I also appreciate the visual examples that accompany the verbal descriptions. I find it really hard to learn only by listening to a description if I’m not also doing, but the combination here is key.
    Is suppleness in this scale what used to be relaxation?

    I would love to see you explain how you take a horse that is through from behind but a little heavy in the hand to take the weight back onto the hind end more 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    will be great to see on a young horse, im struggling at the moment with a horse who is quite unbalanced and on the forehand but also quite fussy in the contact and often drops behind the vertical. its hard to get him to push into the contact.

    Well it’s a mind blowing episode. I have never ever heard about training scale like that. Some questions appear: everybody tells to work on suppleness by bending and transitions, is it correct? How to work on suppleness? Is suppleness connected with poll and neck relaxation?
